hast week a circular was issued through
tin; mails from Johnstown which in the
political history of C'amhria county since
the days of Know nolhiiitfism has never
been paralelled. It n.-eds no comment.
It speaks for Itself. It was intend.il, no
daubt, lo e set-n only hy a certain class of
people and was to he used for the puiMise
of stirilmrnp religious strife and hiuotry
In the hope, that the Republicans would
lie lienelitt.-d. The Johnstown .Trihutu;
according to its usual custom, w hen it dis
covered the circular was working the
wroriK way, at once attributed its author
is lip to the Democrats, tint in veslig.it ion
has proven thai Y. S. Davis, an employe
of trie Johnstow n Histol1ice, a Republican
in (Mil i lies, is the party who got the print
ing dime, and issued the circular.
The fnllnwing is a copy of the circular:
DkakSui: Relieving that the time lias
'o when every American should know
for whom they cast their ballots, after cin
siderable trouble the necessary information
has been obtained, lly Americans are
meant Protestant Americans. Roman
Catholics, be they Irish or (iernian. are
wot American in their ideas, no matter
where they were horn. Their lirst duty is
to the Rope of Rome , w Imlll they lielieve
to lie infallible. He con. I. -inns the public
sch.Hil as giHlless, and an institution that
must be ucstroyed, desigi ales all 1 'rotes -tants
as heretics who must Ui d.-spi-e.l.
and is using every etTort to cou.iier every
part of this glorious I'nioii as he has the
city of New York, that he may have union
of church and stale, and temMiral hiit
as weii as' spiritual. A Roman Catholic
never voted fer a I'rotestant if lie could
vote for a Catholic. A 1'rolcstant should
wnvr vole for a Roman Catholic under any
ciiciim.-tau.es. They carry out this
policy in all social liii-ine-s and
political dealings, at primary as well as
general election, and aregei ernily success
ful in liaving ienple of their own faitii till
all (Misitions. If you doutit litis eiiuuiei at
the nlhceholders in this county and the
iin.lidates now emh-aviug t j get into ollice.
Kvery Prototant shotild litfht the Ini iiau
it.iolics with tln-ir own weapms. N'n
mailer what party vou helnng In iln not
support the nominees simply liccause they
are on your ticket. Imt make an effort to
Iiml out what kind of men vou are voting
for. In county, tow nship, i-it v or tiorotigli
lections what difference does It make
w helher a man is a Republican, Democrat.
Prohibitionist or of some other party?
Party Hilicy makes no iii ffeii-uce in these
offices, and what is wauled is ouali.ied
Americans. If you can't vole for a Protes
tant on the Rcpuhlican or Democratic
icket you can on the Prohibition ticket, as
tin-re are never auv Roman Catholics on
that. Cambria county is one of thr worst
nests of liiuot.il Roman Catholics in the
state, and only hy united effort can we
break their rule.
Kindly circulate thn information con
tained herein as widely as possible, but be
very careful in doing so, as our enemies- are
well organieil and ever on an rt. V till
Americans are not organized and very
prone lo iM-lu-vc these tilings, a ml wlnlewe
ire in a majority, weare seldom successful.
A still hunt is tin best, and if we can take
our enetiiiis liy surprise we will without
loiilit defeat them. Don't let your work
stop here, tint hereafter attend primaries
is well as general elections. Carry out this
policy al all limes, ami iH-ioietoug txiiti the
Republican and Democratic parties will
ccognizethe fact that it is useless to nom
inate for olhee anybody hut loyal Proles
taut Americans.
Following is the political situation in
his county. Some time ago letters were
sent to the candidates of both political
parties for Congress. State Senate, and As
sembly, asking them to define their posi
tion on the leading iuesiious. viz: Reading
f the llilile in the public schools, compul
sory education, and restriction of Immi
gration.
Messrs. Woodruff. Lemon and Rhine
completely ignored the letters, and it w as
necessary to get information in regard to
these pe ipleelsew here, w hich is as follows:
I a. D. WondiulT is op - 1 to all these
questions, fear lug to lose the l at.iollc vote.
but will not place himself on record, fear
ing to lose the American Vote. He has
di-coni iiir.il the use o' the ISihle in the
public schools of .lohnst.iw n, and endeav
ors to give positions lo Komau l at In. lie
teachers in preference to others. He is
afraid to come out squarely on either side
of the iiuestion, and we don't want week-
km-ed politicians to represent us.
.lull ii A. I.emoii. fur State Senate, is as
had and possibly a little bit worse than
Woodruff, Is-ing a liln-ral contributor to
Cat holie churches, and U-frtends them in
very way in preference to Protestants.
We understand he belongs to no church
and has no religion except to hold office.
Of (ieorge W. Rhi lie hot llillU Coll Id lie as-
certaimil. He is, however, a member of
Iheti'rand Army, and an unknown quan
tity can't be any worse than Lemon. If
you can't vote for Rhine, try the Prohibi
tion candidate.
For Congress, . I. D. Hicks heartily ap
proves all the qucsCons, and if elected,
would endeavor to enact laws in harmony
w ith the same.
For Assembly, . I. C. ;atcs, .1. C. Stine

Mr. Hicks and are all right.
No letter was writu-u to James .1.

learned from anot her source thai he w;is
one of the most bigoted Roman Catholics
in the county, and while l.e might piouiise

the achievement is due, made requisition

the finest eiuipineut which those famous

great line is in such excellent physical
condition, so well protecttil hy the safe

have lieeu educated and trained under tin
eyes of its high ollii ials. that a movement
of this kind, extraordinary as it may ap
iear to the politic, wasetTected without in
terference in any manner with the routine
of everyday tratlle.
It is safe to say that while no other
r untiv ill the world would la- aide to move
the entire organization of its goverumt n
a distance of one thousand miles, so there
is no other railroad company w hich could
grapple with such a problem ami solve it
