An exchange snys: "'Whether a school
bouse should lie made attractive to tin:
eyes of the children as well as comfortable
to them in other respects, ought no longer
to lie the question. In. older limes the
plainer and more repulsive the school
house, the more exposed and unsightly the
surroundings. the more it seemed to conform
with the then idea of what a school liou s.
should be. Hut times have changed, and
modern taste and experience have wisely
concluded that the school bouse should be
made as attractive to the children as pos
sible. As a general thing the boys ami
girls go unw illingly to school, and not un
frcquently because the school house is any
thing but nu inviting place. Our chinches
t heaters and other places in which ieople
assemble are made as tasteful as possible.
Why? Hecause the world at large look
upon tasteful things. Why not apply
the" Idea to the school house and
make it pleasant to the eyes of
the pupils? Why not ornament them
with flowers, pictures or anything that
w ill serve to gratify the sense of sight, and
thereby render them attract! ve rather than
repulsive, as so many of tht m now arc?

To the school directors and teachers of
Cambria county:
In accordance witli the joint resolution
of the Senate, and House of Ilepresenta
tivesof the L'nited States, Henjamin Har
rison. President of tho United States, and
Ilobt. E. Pattisou, Governor of Pennsyl
vania have by thMr pr K-lamations ap
pointed Friday, October tMst, iw: a nation
al holiday in com moral ion of the four hun
dredth discovery of America.
It is a thought full of inspiration that
the thirteen millions of school children of
this great Republic are to take an Impoi
tant part in the ceremonies of this celebra
tion and it is socially important to us all
that the old Keystone state, with her nun
million school children one-thirteenth of
the entire number, should stand iu this, as
she does in all other matters educational,
in the van. Therefore Dr. Waller, Super
intendent of Public Instruction, has urged,
ami we can but emphasize his rtiquest, that
every school In the stale take some action
to observe the day in an appropriate man
ner. The schools are to open in the morning
as usual and so much time as is necessary
set aside for the exercises, and the day
counted as one taught. Copies of the of
ficial program will be ftuud in the school
Journals. This should lie followed or var
ied to suit. Extra copies of this program
may be had by addressing Francis Hella
my. Youths' Companion building. Hoston.
Mass. I enclose copies of ofliclal circulars
for each scnool board, and copies of circu
lar concerning pupils' work for the World's
F'air for each teacher; also copies of this
letter for each secretary and each teacher,
hoping the secretary will attend to deliv
ering them at once.
