inches in thickness ami weighs M'i
poumls, a rather surprising weight f -r
tie' dimensions of the slab, but the
wood is very dense. The bark has
been removed and the slab is free from
cracks and juitt' solid. Kither to be
cut up into veneer sections, polished
and framed, or to be cut up for mounts,
to be set in jewelry, it would be worth
its weight in Told. Takinr the weight
at 14'j iHiunds. or 171 ounces, ami at

Tho 1'aris o-'mg-erbrcad fair, as It is
called, which is held every prin;r in th.
fauboui 'f St. Antoine and Place tie la
Nation, is notorious for tho number ol
natural and artificial pltenomena ex
hibited there to the public. This year,
says a correspondent in the Loud-m
Standard, their number has ln-en proat
I3 increased by tho arrival vf about
twenty cuis-do-jatte, who aro wr. teli
etlly ltal-od in huts on a piece t.f was.t

acles of former times. Kvcry morniiii;
they all issue forth, propelling them
selves with their hands, to take up their
places at the fair, there to await th"
l-nco which may le thrown to them by
the compassionate passers-by. Their as
leet is so pitiful that it is said mac.y of
them make a rich harvest, which, how
ever, of course pus to tho lioXjjar
farmer." It appears that twenty or
thirty years ajro tho culs-tlo-jatte w re
almost unknown ia France, and that
these deplorable looking cripples aro
the prtnluct of what mav le called an
industry. Almost all these numerous de
formed little creatures come from Spain,
and more especially from Tolosa. or the
nciphliorhood situated at alxmt fifteen
miles to the south of St. Sebastian.
They are the outcome of tho abominable
practices of U-'ar 'farmers." who
sock their victims amono; the children
of tho peasants. When there is a weak
ly Imy in the family the' persuade the
parents that he eati never lo anything
but a burden to thorn unless they con
sent to have him transformed into a
eul-de-jatto, ami promise to pay them
a tritle a day so long- as the eul-de-jatte
is left with them. The operation to
which tho unfortunate creature is sul-j.-eted
is as effectual as it is simple.
The h-frs of tho child are so tightly
compressed that the circulation of the
bliKwl in them is stopped. Kittle by
little tho loos wither away, and the cul-de-j.itto
is manufactured. In lss?
Waldcek Ibmsseau. the minister of the
interior, prohibited the introduction t.f
these Spanish culs-de-jalte into France,
but it is estimated that recently three
or four hundred of the poor creatures
cross the frontier every year. Tlu-y
aro now seen in almost every town in
France, and have jr,,t as far nortii as
r.olyium. To 1k a cul-de-jatte must bo
a profitable trade for the bopj.tir farm
ers who manufacture them aud briii.y
them from Spain, as these traders pay
the parents of the poor cripples a pit
tance of only fifty centimes to one franc
a d:iy for their hire.

"We are the victims of fickle fashion,"'
saitl F. A. Hendricks, a lioston leather

ten men wore boots, but now shoes are
the prevailing style of footgear. As
the amount of finished leather required
to make one pair of boots is sufficient
for nearly three pairs of bhoos this var
iation of fashion makes matters a trifle
cerulean for the tanners. For the first
time in the history of the trade the
upper-leather tanners are uniting to
control the output and maintain living

found a, stone house. It wassmall. ar.d
had apparently Urn made for tl.e pur-Io.-m
ot holding Minn-tiling which was
in vi-r to jrt .iit, for there was neither
d.s.r nor winilow. The place showed
such evidence of jrreiit ag-e that Thomas
had no scruples in hreakin- into the
hou'-, and the si;rht which met his
p-aze when he did so nearly caused him
to faint.
Lying-on tho floors and propped up
around the walls of the little stone
housr were the headh-ss l.xlies of sev
enteen people. The lxxli.-s ha.l lcn
prepared ill some way and retained
their form anil appearance as if they
had Ik-oii dead only short time. Not
a head was found aloutthe place. Tho
liodies were those of men and women
and two children. On rejxirtin- the
discovery at Salt Lake an investiga
tion was made, and the lx-lief is ;en
eral that the b-.niies aro those of people
who were kilKil in one of the many
early Mormon wars which took place
when the country was being- settled.
What ha.s boon done with the heads is a
mystery which no one has attempted to
solve. There was nothing about the

identity.
WRAPPED WITH SNAKES.
Adventure of a Farmer ttlio lronl'J
Into an 11 Well.
Alexander Krolsky, a farmer near
Derby Hill, t'oim., nt-ently had an ex
perience with snakes that ha.s rendered
him temporarily insane, and the phy
sicians are not sure that he will ever rc
p;ain his reason. Krols.ky went down
into a well on his farm for the purpose
of cleaning it out. lie had U-i-n tlown
b-.it a few minutes when he shouted to
his cousin, who had lowered him, to
draw him up. The man liopan pulling
up the rope. When he had he' pod
Krolsky nearly to the top lie looked
d.nvn and saw several black and brown
water snakes were around Krolsky's
arm and lxidy.
Tho sijrht of tho serpents seared tho
man, and, dropping- tho rope, he ran
howling away. Krolsky's shrieks were
heard by laborers a short distance
away, and they ran to tho well. Krol
sky was battling desperately with the
snakes. Ho was quickly helped out.
From his liody five immense snakes
were torn and killed. His mind is nw
dorangod. Tho ohl well in which he
encountered tho reptiles is apparently
full of them. A lantern lowered into
it revealed a countless numlter of ser
pent heads protruding from the wall.
