met w ith a shocking and fatal accident at
that place one day last week. The unfor
tunate hoy attempted to jump n train,

tnancled. The injured limbs were ampu
tated, but the vjctim only, survived a few
hours.
It is stated that the newly discovered
hectics that kill potato hugs are unusually
plentiful this season In some parts (,r the
state. The beetle is as huire as t he com -mon
house flv. and its color is blue, with a
hrown head. It attacks the potato htifr on
the hack an.l kills it while holding it with
Its fore lens.
The school directors of F.bensburir have
selected Miss Allie Lloyd. Miss Annie
Jones and Miss Maggie Shenkle as three
of the teachers for the coming term. Two
more teachers are yet to be selected and w e
understand there are live applicants for
the positions. There will lie one more
teacher this year than heretofore.
A. W. r.acom, a memlier of the Demo
cratic county committee of Westmoreland,
w as killed at the railroad station at Creens
hnrs. on Thursday night after the conven
tion in attempting to board a car. He w as
ground to pieces under the wheels. He
lived at Calumet und leaves a wife and
five children. He was a coke drawer.

Indiana county, is visiting his nephew.

Mr. Harr's shop then being on the ground

The boiler in Weimcr's plaining mill in
the Kighth ward. Johnstown, exploded on
Thursday morning of la-t week ut hi
o'clock. I'artofit was blown up through
the roof and fell back again to the cellar.
As luck would have it. no one was hurt.
The rear end of the mill was blown out.
and the neighboring houses were badly
shaken.

cal fences. The Colonel is a candidate for
t he nomination for State Senator on the
Kepublican ticket in this district, and as
he has been there before, he is well aware

One night last week when all were
wrapped iii .-lumber over at Cherry tree,
the town was suddenly roused by screams
as if made by a child in terrible agony.
An immediate vigilant search was instiga
ted, but it revealed nothing. The most
plausible speculation leads to the belief
that a stray panther Is prowling around

Mr. William Shoemaker, w as severely
hurt on Friday last by falling through a
hole in the nj per thiol of O'Hara. Luther

failed to notice the'open hole and stepped
in falling a distance of about ten feet back
of a horse. He is pretty badly stoved up

hones broken.
The green goods men w ho sent a Clear
field man the halves of two crisp new bills
to show that they meant business and
dealt in the genuine stuff, says the Clear
field 7i i)(llifitn. w ill he surprised to learn
that the Clearfield mansent the clippi ngs 10
Washington and received two good bills in
exchange for them. Thete is nothing slow
about our town unless it i- our increase in
population.
The Lutherans of Somerset county,
who will, by invitation, be joined by a

night on Tuesday descended from her bed
room w indow on a rope ladder, w ith herlov
der, which, (ieorge L. Cornelius, had pre
pared, and the two drove to Saltillo. where
they were married at o'clock in the

c!o-ely after the couple but failed to over
take them In time. The parties all enjoy

Mr. Augustus Strasler and his bride,
w ho were man led at St. Augustine, Cam
bria county, on the t), inst.. returned
home yesterday from their wedding trip
through eastern cities, and have gone to
housekeeping in their new home on Kigh
teei,ib avenue. Mrs. Strasler and Mrs.
Miii.-r. who was married at the same
time, have been successful teachers in the
schools of Cambria county, and were fam
iliarly known as the Iiyan Sisters. .1

that when they went Into office the actual

fourteen, on Monday found a shot -gun car
tridge, and havi ng a curiosity to inspect
its contents, took out the shot and t hen tin?
powder. He placed the powder on a paper
and set tire to the paper. The hlaze went
out without exploding the jiowder, and tin
hoy thinking there w as no danger, went up
to examine it. Just as lie s looped over it
the podwer exploded, burning the hoy's
face badly. He will not le permanently
Injured, but he has learned a lesson that
w ill do him a lifetime.

Dr. A. J. Wilson, one of Jeannette's
h ading physicians, is a native of Clearfield
county, having resided in that portion of
the state until the last few years. Soim
years ago Dr. Wilson went on the hond of
a county treasurer w ho, through a series of
misfortunes, failed for 0.im.i one-eighth
of which Dr. Wilson had to pay. The
Doctor, however, lost no sleep over the af
fair. On opening his mail last Saturday,
lie was surprised to tind an enclosed check
nn the Clearfield national bank for i.S71,

full. The ex-county treasurer had gone

parole, left her place some weeks ago and

her well, was applied to. and on Saturday
found her in Pittsburg and returned her
to Morgauza. Miss Ileininger Is said to

On Friday night Mr. John Bloom, who
resides in Ki. hlan.l township, was struck
hv lightning. He w as lying in bed w ith his
" ife and baby boy when the storm came
on. A t!a-h of lightning struck the chim
ney, ran .low n t lie tlue to the kitchen and
pa-s.-d through the second floor. It struck
Mr. Bloom's cheek near his eye. passed
dow n over his face, singeing his moustache.
It then continued down his chest, down his
groin to iiis knee, scaring it all the w ay as
if w ith a red hot iron. He was unconscious
for twenty minutes. The gable ,.f the
house was also wrecked hy a second flash.

Cambria township, died at her home on

years. Mrs. Apel was born at Hanai..

w here soon after she married her husband.
The couple came to Camhria county the
same year and have tVcn residents of the
county ever since. Besides a liercavcd
husband, she leaves four sons, Krnest. of
Pueblo, Colorado; John, of Bra.l.lnck. Pa.,
and Herman and Allo-rt. of KU-nsburg.
and one daughter. Sophia, who is unmar
ried an.l resides at home.
Ow ing to some changes and Improve
ments made necessary in out oflice for the
reception of a new press purchased while
in New York, the Fi:fki vn is a day late
this week. We ex ect t he press to arrive
next week and it may lie possible we will
he a day late in getting out our next issue.
After that with our increased facilities the

our readers w ill bear with 11- for causing
the unavoidahle delays. Our new press is
a Potter, manufactured at I'lain'i.M. New
Jersey, and capable of turning out twenty
papers per minute. With this big addition

the be-t equipped country newspaper of
fices ill the state.
Among the many friendships formed
during the Editorial excursion to Scranton
there are none valued more highly hy our
lictter half and out-self than that of Mr.
and Mrs. Laaius. ,.f Kingston. Pa..
They were both former residents of New
York city and on our arrival at the Me
tropolis, it w as to their kindness that our
tour of sight seeing w as in a large mea-ure
so pleasant and agreeable. It was a source
of deep regret to us to have the party sev
ered by the receipt of a dispatch by Mrs.
Lazarus, while in the city, announcing the
sudden death of Dr. bVyiiolds. her lather,
at Scranton. and necessitating her return.
Our hearts went out in sympathy for her
it: her bereavement and in sorrow for the
parting that had come so suddenly to our
little party.
The Pennsylvania railroad has placed
an order with the Pennsylvania Steel
Company for ?.(m tons of steel rails,
weighing piO pounds to tlieyard. The
heaviest rail now in use weighs pounds
per yard and il was laid by the B ailing
railroad, which also has considerable of
the '.Mi-pound rails in use. Some of the
New England railroads are using
ninety-pound rails. The heavie-t rails
now i n use on t he t racks of the Pennsyl
vania railroad weigh bin s.-, pounds. The
new loo-pound rail- will be laid on the
mountain division of the main line. Tin
order just placed will provide for nearly
four miles nf track. The price i- at the
same rate per ton as the "tighter rails are
sold at. The gradual increase in w eight of
rolling stock- in recent years has made it
necessary for 1 lie railroads to build si rung -er

About o'clock Monday afternoon
three burglars who have been inmate-.
of the Somerset jail since April 1st. tied
bed -In ets together, and securing an iron
grating of one of the r.-ar w indows on the
upp.-r t i. r corrider. carefully removed two
of the bars they had previously sawed
through, and slid safely to the ground. Jo
feet below. The escaped criminals were
seen running through the outskirts of the
town and an alarm was at one given.
The sheriff and his deputies were all away
from home at the time and no cfTorts
were put forth to capture the
prisoners until after his return an hnurand
a half later, wh -ti a small posse started in
pursuit. The names of the men who esca
ped are lames Murphy. John Kntcrls ami
William Dougherty. They have all served
terms In the jx-nltentiary.
Last week we mentioned the fact that
a horse had liccn stolen from the farm of
John Hughes, in Camhria township, about
a mile north of town, and recovered the
next day. found tied in the woods near the
farm of Neil McKay, some thre;inile.s fur
ther north. On Saturday evening Con
stable Humphreys, policeman Davis and
Herman Croi.se went to the house of Lew is
Hoovir. Sr.. I:i this place, for the pur
psf of arreting Lew is Hoover. Jr., who
w as susiiected of being implicated in the
taking of the horse. On tln-ir inquiring
for his whereabouts at the front door the
young man made his exit through a rear
window, hut was captured ny Herman
Crouse. who had Ix-en stationed at that
point. He gave hail for a hearing which
occurred before Justice Jones on Wednes
day afternoon, when the young man was
bound over to answer the charge at Sep
tember se inns.

ing her a hearing- Her sister Ida had gone

and has not, yet been ai rested. The Misses
Snyder, belong to a very respectable fami
ly, hav? always horde an irreproa.hahle
reputation and the:i friends feel positive
of their innocence of the charge. At this
writing Judge Barker had not yet arrived

of the most successful and enjoyable par
ties ever gisen in the bnrough.
Dancing was the chief enjoyment of the
evening. Supper was served at the Frank
lin hotel. Also, tin? most delicious ice
cream, cake, and lemonade at Mrs. Litging
er's. Uev. Father Lllddoll honored the
crowd with his presence. There were
thirty-seven couples present. The music,
which was unsurpassed was rendered by
Mes.-rs. Burkharl Kami-ill and Si. aggers.

Our letter last week was written .after
reaching Scranton. We leached that city
at l.rto i.m. 01. Tuesday. hungry and t ravel -stained,
w. re taken in charge by commit
tees of the Press club and Board'of trade
and escorted to the different hotels, most
of the excursionists finding quarters in the
Westminster. Wyoming ami l.ackawana
Hotels. After refreshing ourselves w ith a
w ash, (some with a w asli-dow in and par
taking of a good dinner we rested until
four o'clock, when thecnt'ie party was
driven through the city in cairiages. pa-sing
over the principal streets, and view ing
the fine buildings for which Scranton is
noted. It is a city of one hundred thous
and population, is the chief city of the an
thracite coal region and ranks a- the
fnnrt h city in the state in p" illation and
business. TheCourt House at Scranton is
one of the finest in the tie state and its
line churches and puhlie building are in

spirit of its teoile. The streets are all

lightful drive gave the excursionists u

roundings. In the evening we were ten
dered a complimentary concert by the

Academy resound with a program of the
choice-t selections that it has ever Irecn
our lot to listen to. The enchort s. kept
up until the applaud. si singers reappeared,
made the program a long one. but all felt
sorrv when the finale was reached.

county, thirty-two miles distant over the
celebrated Oravitv Bailmad. The fol
