the inquest in the coroner's oftioe tf this
couty yesterday afternoon, there are
strange revelations. Strange itecauso ru
mors that he had been killed by otbcials of
county or "tato were wholly and entirely
dissipated, and Iwoause tho truth is really
more astonishing than w ere tho sensation
al reports w hich first gained eurroncy.
Magistrate McKonna acted in Coroner
Mellow ell's stead. Inside tho rail of tho
room were the elder Thomas M. Marshall.
William Heardon. Thomas J. Donahoe.
Drs. Hutchinson and Craham.of Dixmont.
Charles Fagan.Janies P.. Scott. Mayor Hose,
of Johnstown. Sheriff Sheriff Shumakor. of
Cambria county, and other well-known
professional men and numerous witnesses.
Outside the rail the lobby was filled with
spectators.
As tho case progressed the spectators
llrstsaw sensational possibilities in connec
tion xviih deceased's treatment while in
custody disapear: but subsequently their
morbid sentiment was satisfied a they
heard the sti ry of bow ho went to the
place of death and received his mortal
wounds by being hanimonil with surli a
commonplace ami domesticated instrument
as a potato-masher. Ho had demanded a
girl at the hands of her kinsmen: threat
ened death when he was refused, nd in
elf-defonse they killed him. Hut John
McClarren. though married, does not goto
a dishonored grave: lie was mad when he
made his demands. The story is best told
by the v itnesses.
C. IJ. Cribble, an employe of the Penn
sylvania Company, sworn. I never saw
deceased until I saw him on a train. Two
men were with him. TI.ey didn't abuse
him from the time they got on the train at
I 'nion station until ho w as taken off at
Dixmont.
J. M. Shumakor, Sheriff of Cambria
I'oiinty. testified I saw John McClarren
first Wednesday evening. Ho was brought
to Cambria county jail at Elx-nshurg on
Tuesday night. I was not at EhciishurE
when he w as brought there. Wednesday
night the Warden notified me that the man
was there, and I went down, and to his
cell. 1 noticed that his head was tied up.
and 1 asked the Warden why. He replied
""Ho has a li.de in his bead which ho got in
a light down at Summet bill." Next morn
ing McClarren w as quite bad. and I took
two prisoueis. the Warden, a doctor and
myself and went to tho cell. McClarren
was on his hands and knees on the floor
pouring wat. r down through cracks )
twoon the boards. The Warden oitencd the
cell door, and one of the prisoners, a color
ed man. rushed in and -ecured him. Then
wo put a st rait-jacKot on him. took him to
a w agn. hauled him to the depot and put
him in a baggage car on a chair, to which
I strapped him. and in this way ho went to
Cre-soii. the jin tion with the main line of
the P. K. H. When the train for Pittsburg
arrived we took him in tm- baggage car
wlu ro ho was strapped to a chair as
before. He had called frequently for w at
er and was somow bat noisy, but ho was
not violent. We had him shackled as far
as Pittsburg whore they were removed
when we boarded a Fort Wayne train for
Dixmont. Arriving there, 110 "bus nu t us,
and we telephoned up for it. McClarren.
the Warden and myself started to walk up
t he road, hut had not gone far w hen the
"bus met us. When the physician at Dix
mont took charge of the patient I told him
that I had heard at WiliHoro that ho (Mc
Clarren i was choking a man to death, and
that it was necessary to club him to get
him off. He was not abused w hile under
arrest.
James T. Young. Warden of the Elx-ns-burg
jail. dose rilied how he was
brought to the jail in a wagon;
that ho appealed rational enough to toll
the contents ot two pocket-luniks which
were found on him. He w:i quiet enough
until l-t yveen twelve and 0110 o'clock tiiat
night (May :'. when he appeared crazy and
we jacketed him. Next morning he was
letter, but later lie had another spell, and
another lie fore we took him to Dixmont.
Hot w eon Pittburg ami Dixmont McClar
ren told me how long he had lieon a rail
road man and all about himself, but a few
minutes before we got there his mind left
him. and he imagined he was shooting
hiriN. but ho was not violent. He was
wounded when he came to jail, and the
officers told me ho had jtiuicd out of a
w indow and choked a man until rescuers
boat him off with a club. Ho w as choking
a man named I5uuton.
Dr. F. C. Jones affirmed I saw John
McClarren in the Ebeii"bnrg jail. I saw
that his head was wounded, and when I
looked. I saw what I considered a large
scalp wound, but it appeared to ! healing
and I did not make an examination. He
told me had been hit w ith a club.
James I). Snydr affirmed He is con
ductor on tho Ebensburg branch of the
Pennsylvania railroad. The deceased was
quiet on the trip flora Elietisburg la Cres
son. the length of his run.
William Stone, of Ireensburs, a baggage
master on the Penny 1 v ania railroad, tes
tified that McClarren w as brought to Pit ts
burg in his car May .ith. "I saw a cut on
the top of his head an inch and a
half or two inches long. It appeared to le
a few days old. There was 110 violence
w hatover used in the car."
Joseph A. Topper, a miner at Summer
hill, affirmed I knew deceased. He came
to my father-in-law's house 0110 Saturday
night and got in tho house, and said ho
w as going to get his daughter and marry
her in live minutes or kill us. He seized a
-hovel and a potato-masher, and when he
made a break forthed.tor to tho stairs, I
struggled to prevent him from ojM iiiiig the
door ami lie hit mo with the masher: again
lie lilt me and again made a dash for the
stairs, but I was therewith him. and he hit
me with the shovel, grappled with me. and
got a death grip on my throat. Then
Charley Lurton, the eigliteen-year-old sou
of my father-in-law. got. he potato-masher
from McClarren and hit him three times on
the head witli it. Then he loosed his
grasp; he had boon stunned. When he
left his home, a half mile away, ho jumped
through a w itidow, knocking out th;ash
and fell eight feet to the ground.
Thomas Aldens. tho next witness, had 110
important testimony.
Dr. C. C. Craham. Assistant Sitperin
tciidchdent or Dixmont Hospital, related
the story .r the DiannerorMcClarren's ar
rival at tfie h.pital and graphically and
clearly described, his examination of the
the wounds of tho deceased. The wound
on the head had not been dressed at any
lime. The wound was quit large. The
man w as weak. He w as reverish and af
ter ho was washed and after an examina
tion he ordered the prisoner to hod. whore
it was necessary to kw p him. THore were
evidences of congestion of the brain, but it
was impossible then to discover evidences
of a fracture of the skull, and it was not
until he had made a po--i mortem exam ill
ation, removed the skull and brain tissue,
that tho fractures were discoyen-d. T5c
fore death there were no indications of a
fracture. Two were depressed, one was a
linear 01 fissure fracture. Two of them

Dr. Hutchinson, Superintendent 0 Dix

after he airiveil. Dr. Craham had the
111 charge, but he examined him and found
him very "Weak.
Supeivisor Morrow, Robert McCiffen,
nurse, and Robert Leonard, a night watch
man at Dixmont. testified substantially
the same as Drs. Craham and Hutchinsnu.
The jury returned a verdic t to tho effect
