John McCIarren. of Croyle township, who was taken from the jail in this place, to Dixmont Hospital on Thins In y of last week, ilie.l in that institution on Monday erening. A post mortem examination showed that his skull had been fractured in two places and the coroner of Allegheny county was called on who notified the dead man's friends and deputized Alder man McKcnna to hold an inquest. McCIarren was about 4" years of age. a stout r.bnst man and was by occupation an engineer. He has been insane for some time, but only recently w as he considered dangerous. He was laboring under thel Impression that he was pur-net! by White ' caps, and when under that impression would run for miles to escape his imagina ry enemies and was dangerous. He was brought hereon Mny3d.br ibe constable of Wilmore. and on Thursday of last w eek, ta ken to Dixmont by Sheriff Shumakerand Jail Warden Young. The testimony taken before the coroner on Tuesday was as follows: Dr. X. S. Hutchinson was the first witness examined br the acting Coroner. The doctor said: 'John McCIarren. deceased, w as sent here Maya. lsnr;. by the Court of Cambria. I was not present at the time ho was re ceived, but the next morning the nurse called me in and showed me a cut on Mc Clarren's had which was V shaped. This cut was on his head w hen he was received at this institution. I called Dr. Craham in. The deceasiil was acutely insane. He was unable to tell mo how ho received his injury. He was in a state of shock, ami ho never rallied. He never regained con sciousness or reason, and died at .1 r. m. on May ".. I.'.'. I told the nurses to take good ca re of him. and in case of death I would insist upon a post mortem examin ation, which I did. ami found that bodied from violence. Dr. C.raham knows more about th. case than any other per-.oii." James T. McCIarren. who lives at South Fork. Pa., and who is a cousin of th..-dead man. said: 'The deceased was about 4.1 rears old. He was a single man, and lived about Summerhill. Cambria county. Pa. I don't know anything alnuit his injuries. I have sern him since his death." Ed S. Kennedy, the Southside liquor man. testified to knowing John McCIarren. He said: "I saw him on Sunday. May 1. ls'.i.', at h'.s home. He w as flighty, but at times rational. He talked to me and told mo he imagined White Caps were after him. and ho jumped out through a window and took the asl with him. I noticed a slight cut on his head, and that is all I know of his death. I saw him Ix-fore he w as brought to Pittsburg. Ho had several cuts on bis head.' Roliert McCitlin said the deceased was imt under his care about a week ago. He was all bruised and had cuts on his head. There was only one wound visible on his head, tint black marks over his body. A, X. Morrow, supervisor of the male department, said: "I received John A--Clarren and took him to the ward. 1 .saw he l.a.l a large scar 011 his head an.l was marked fin head and breast. There was no deep cuts, -but on the top of his head, that I saw. I left him in charge of a nurse after seeing him sleeping. He w as brought hero on Thursday. May.".. l-W. by two men. I was told one of them was a Sheriff. One of them said thev had a very hard light with McCIarren ami that it took live men to handle him: that they hail to boat him to bring him along and said ho w as a dan gerous man. He did not say w ho tioat him: simply 'we." ISoth men were jiresent when the statement was made, also Dr. Cra- liam " Dr. C. ;.; t.raharn testified: "I received this mar. Thursday. May ri.isirj. from the Sheriff of Cambria county. He said he knew nothing of the rase except that the man had been very violent and be received an order from court to bring liim hero, and that ho had jumped from tbe w inflow and taken a sash with him and got up. shook the sash from him and ran away. "He was again capture.), arid when he went to tiling him here he was so bad that they had to knock him down with a club orsiicuto bring him along. I examined 1 i in and found a :'iit on his head. He died at .". i'. m. m May and 1 sent for his friends, and when they arrived this morn ing I insisted on a post mortem examina tion, and they consented, ami I opened the skull and found two fiat Hires. I think that the injuries prodiic death. Tho in jury 011 the top of tbe head was only su perlicial. as he got up and ran. but other injuries found w ere produced later. There was an inflamed condition of tho brain. ami a clot ol blood. I examined the organs and found none unhealthy. The luugs w ere tilled w ith air and thole w ere no ad hesions. The heart and lungs wen- nor mal. The injuries would tie produced by a blunt instrument such as would not cut the scalp. The injury wasneeived upon the opiMisito side from lite, laceration of brain tissue. "I cannot see how the injuries or frac tore I found could lie cau-sl by his fall or jump from the window as described at all. as thr prominence of skull would rccoiv. the bruise first, and it did not in this case. I don't know the names of the parties w ho brought him. I w ould re ignizo the man who said he had to hit him with a club to bring him along, and thought at tho tim that the cut on the head whs what he re fei red Hi, tint my post mortem examina tion reveals the fact that br was U-ateti on the head bv some blunt instrument Tw o fractures show depi.-sst.Hi of skull. There w as but little trouble and iioforoer.nwip.fi in getting him into the jail ami cell, the Warden merely humoring him ami talking kindly to him. On hi Wing placed in the cell he was searched ami freely gave up his knife, pockot-hfiok aml such ot her trifles as ho liad fin his per' 4011.
