Considering the prcvalcn.-e and insidi us

at the present time, and knowing that per

We earnestly exhort the faithful of this
diocese to be mindful of the spirit of this
holy season, and of the necessity of prayer
and works of penance to aps ase the aug

practice of self-denial, especially in those
luxuries w hich are neither necessai y nor
conducive to the preservation of bodily
health and strength: for instance, the use
of intoxicating liquors, unless prescribed
by a physician as medicine, that a gixidcx

make it a cause of sin and misery.
We reM-at the exhortations of the Sov
ereign Pontiff: that charity lie exercised
towards the poor and afflicted who need
assistance to help them to provide against
the sufferings of poverty iittensitied by
sickness; that public services be held In
the churches, and family devotions at
home: that frequent recourse lie had to
the Sacraments, and that the clergy, by
word and example, lead the people in the
w ay of prayer and penance.
During Lent, in ch.nr. -he w here ev cuing
