The subterranean rivers of the world,
of which the one in the Mammoth cave,

js a curious monument, which was
erected by citizens of Colmar in memory
of two Frenchmen wlso were shot by

the town. Viewed from a distance it
looks like an ordinary nlab. but on ex
amining it more closely it is olsenred
that one side is slightly raised, and
from the grave comes a hand, which
prasps the edpe of the stone; while at
another part a whole artn is stretched
out. and is endeavoring1 to grasp a real
French bayonet which lies near. The
whole has the appearance of a per
son who has I seen buried alive tryinp;
to escape from the tomb. The hand
anl arm are of bronze, and life-size.
Vanity Fair declares that a lady who
recently visited the churchyard, and
w ho came upon this realistic structure
unawares, fainted from terror.
