The handsome Calholic churcli edilice
at Council-vile was destroyed by lire on
Saturday morning. The lire originated
from an overheated furnace and was well
under w ay before it w as discovered. None
of the valuable paintings, records, furni
ture, etc.. could be gotten out. The build
ing, including contents, was valued at
nearly loo.ilt)o. on which there was only
.'.". in) insurance. The church was built
in lssi. and the building, which was the
finest in the county, alone cost ?.V1.0oO.

ehanicsviHo. Indiana county, is dying f f

by a fall in the winter of 1SST. Several
eminent physicians called to consult in the
case declared that the only possible way to
save the old man's life was to amputate
both legs. He was willing to undergo this
ordeal, but the physicians did not think
him strong enough to survive the opera
tion. Uis relatives, too. objected, because
they thought his end was near anyway,
Last week and the week before the
workmen eniraged in putting the heading
through for the tunnel on the Susquehan
na branch of the Cambria v: Clearfield
railroad, under the skilful direction of Mr.
W. J. Ingram, t he gentlemanly managerof
the work, broke the record in the way of
fast work. Last week they w ent in 76 feet,
while the week before they did still better,
making -o feet with but two machines.
At this rae of working it will not be long
until they have daylight through the hole.
The mam ninth bull that Mr. William
M. Sit.gorly will exhibit at the World's
fair promises to be the biggest things on
hoofs at the great exposition. The animal
weighs t.ivoo pounds, about double the sje
of an ordinarily large bull. Although
short -logged, he is seven feet in height and
his bust measure is twenty-two feet. II"

purchased hy Mr. Singerly in Michigan
He is still grow ing at Mr. Singerly's farm
near l'hiladelphia, and his keeper expects

shipped to Chicago.

man on the West IVnn railroad, while
making a coupling on Wednesday night
of last week, hi-clothes caught on the car

The American Telephone Company
has a gang of men on the road measuring
the distance along the linefroni their main
office in New York city. This (Thursday )
morning they passed through Etmisburg
and numbered each pole us they passed
along. The pole in front of the Fhki man
building is numbered 14.W, there being
that many polesonthe line from the Fkki -man
office to New York oily. Thedisianco
from this pole to the N'-w Yotk city limits
is 31ii miles and OHO feet,, and one mile
further to the company's main office in the
city. The men travel from six to nine
miles per day.
