THE TRADE DOLLAR.
Its Orlnin ainl furrrr-Coinrd for I'ae li
UritaUl oaairi.
One of the annoyances of business
men is the "trade dollar." fays the Kan
sas City Star. A man will come in hur
riedly, make a purchase, and throw
down a disc of silver that looks and
rinps like a ilollar. After he is pone the
merchant finds a "trade dollar" in his
till, and it has a tendency to make him
irritable.
The trade dollar was a commercial
convenience when first coined, but it is
now a commercial nuisance. In 1S73
the trade dollar was issued for purposes
of trade with China and other Asiatic
countries, ltcfore that time Americans
had tecn buying Mexican dollars and
shippinp them to the Orientals in pay
ment of merchandise. The trade dollar
was never intended for circulation in
this country, but for exportation
abroad. For five years they were
coined and largely used. The act au
thorizing their coinape repealed the act
authorizing the coinage of the standard
dollar, thus making them for a time the
only tlollar coins issued by the Unitd
States. The merchants might as well
have used silver imrs for eastern trade,
but it was thought that the stamp of the
povernment certifying that 4-0 grains
of silver 900 fine would give other coun
tries greater confidence than to
use simple bars of silver un
stamped and uncertified. From 1873 to
l7o they were legal tender, and 15,000,
000 of them were coined. From 1S7C to
lS73all trade dollars coined were not
legal tender, but it is the opinion of
eminent lawyers that the 15,MM,000 al
ready coined were legal tender, while
those coined after 170 were not. Their
coinage was discontinued February
17S, up to which time there had lieen
U5,l);"i0,:fii0 coined. The exact value of
a trade lollar now is 77 cents, although
people got as much more than that for
them as they can.
February 10, 1$7, an act was passed
by congress authorizing the redemption
of trade -dollars for six months, dollar
for dollar. At that time statisticians
estimated that there were alxmt 7,MH),
000 in the country. As 7,0S'..o:wi were
redeemed it is probable that there are
not many now in the I'nitcd States
although they do not command a pre
mium as rarities.
Like all the other coins of value the
trade dollar has lieen counterfeited,
most of the counterfeits In-ing made of
type metal and circulated in China, Ja
pan and the East Indies. The inhab
itants of the east have learned to be
wary and watchful when handling
coins that come from the accident.
Most of the trade dollars that went to
the eastern countries were melted and
recoined in the currency of the orient.
The trade dollar contains four more
grains of silver than the standard dol
lar, and has eight one-thousandths the
less of alloy.
THE LONG-BEARD FRATERNITY.
A Qnr Itonil of Sympathy I lot ween Mrn
Who .-r Stranern.
A social philosopher in the lloston
Transcript says that there is a kind ol
freemasonry in beards. A man with a
long beard always makes the acquaint
ance of other men with long lieards.
Their Wards are the only common
friend they need; and no man with such
a 1card will ever suspect any evil of an
other roan with a long beard. Thou
sands of dollars have lieen borrowed
with nothing but a lieard for security.
The acquaintance generally begins in
the same way.
"A fine day, isir," says one long
Viearded man to the other. They have
been glancing at each other for some
time in a friendly sort of way. The
other mikes a casual reply about the
weather.
"0 .k1. veat her for whiskers to grow,"
says the first jocularly.
"That's a fact,' says the other; "how
long have yours been growing?"
"Just seventeen years last Thanks
giving." "Well, I beat you by a year and a half."
Then they compare measurements;
and from that time they get on famously.
This is as good a means of introduction
as being very fat. Did you ever notice
how quickly two fat men pet ac
quainted, and from comparing weights
advance to all sorts of. friendly confi
dences? WOMEN AND PET DOGS.
Thonaamla of Dollars Expended Which
Might lie Put to Better t'se.
The inighty Cresar once asked, on see
ing strangers in Home fondle monkeys:
"Io the women of your country bear
you no children, that you are compelled
to center your affections on those vile
creatures?' He was evidently di sgusted;
but then he had never become hard
ened to such sights as may be seen on
daily strolls up Fifth avenue, writes a
New York correspondent. I walked
from St. Patrick's cathedral to Thirtieth
street on the avenue, and if I saw
one ugly little canine decked with cost
ly ribbons coddled and fondled by
pretty women as they rolled along in
their private carriages I saw a hundred.
I have heard, and I believe, that enough
money is spent on dogs in . this city,
every year to put one hundred candi-"
dates for the ministry through college.
"We are not much in advance of the bar
barian who visited Rome two thousand
years ago to pay tribute to the world's
conqueror, after all.
THE BORE IN THE AMAZON.
A Corloos Pheuoinenon Observed In fireat
Kivera.
The "bore' in great rivers is a curious
phenomenon concerning which we get
some interesting information from the
recent United States supplement to the
sailing directions of the cast coast of
South America. The bore on the Ama
zon seems to partake of the character
of a tidal wave. It sometimes occurs in
the western branch of the Amazon near
spring tides, but generally confines it
self to the shallows and affluents, and
is not dangerous in depths greater than
four fathoms.
It announces its presence by a roar
which is heard at a distance of several
miles. This ominous noise increases
as the wall of water approaches, and
then the front of the bore, from five to
twelve feet in height, surges in with a
breaking force and spreads over the
shallow waters off Maraca island and
the estuaries of the Araguri river. The
velocity is from twelve to fifteen miles
an hour. Strange as it may seem, the
phenomenon never develops except at
low tide, and is most frequent and de
structive at the equinoxes. The Chinese
rivers have the most remarkable bores.
Then comes the Amazon.
S:metim-s three or four of these great
waves dash np the river in quick suc
cession. The explanation of the phe
nomenon is easy. It is partly due to
the trades and partly to the prevalence
of strong winds, peculiarly favorable to
the formation of a wall of water. The
storm wave of a cyclone seems to unite
with an exceptionally high tidal wave.
Dr. Johnson's Wooing.
One of the most sensible wooings
mentioned in history is that of Dr.
Samuel Johnson and his lady of his
heart- He wrote to her that he was of
humble origin, that he had no money
and that he had had an uncle hanged.
The lady replied that she cared neither
more nor less for a man on account of
his parentage, that she herself had no
money and if she had had no near rela
tives hanged she had about twenty who
deserved to be, and t.he wUfced they
were.

It is romarkahlc how foroiirnors dotn
icihnl in this country Mill dins' to tluir
native customs. This is p.-ial!.v trno
when they are con-rrftrttti'il in larjre
numliers. Tli sinfrh lirman, Frx-iK-h-man
or Korvvegian who has ranU his
home in some ortia of this land of
lilKrty may still alhero to his oddities
and habits of old, but he does not meet
with the necessary encouragement from
his fellows and prohal.ly finds that
often ridicule takes the place of the ex
pected a pprobat ion.
Ia.st summr a field hand on one of
the farms in North Dakota was struck
hy lightning and instantly killeiL The
proprieUir of the farm notifiel the
parents of the unfortunate Swede of
their son's fate. They were an old
couple who own and farmed one of
those quarter-section tracts that I'ncle
Sara gives away so lavishly. They had
lnen in this country for many years,
their son was born here, and yet, when
it came to the solemnity of burial, they
reverted at once to the memories of
their native land and its customs.
The parents did not even w to view
tlie. body nor attend to its preparation
for the grave, says the Illustrated
American. Friends brought it home in
an ordinary farm wan. and then, in
stead of carryinjr it into the bouse,
placed the remains upon a wide plank
resting on two upturned barrels in the
stable. Horses prew restive as the- al
ways will when pl.iced near a corpse.
The cattle forjrot to munch their hay.
and eowered back in the stalls, show
ing their realization that something1 un
nsual was happening. All this while
the dead lioy's parents were busy with
in doors donninjr their lest apparel; the
aped mother even hunted up an old
hair trunk, from the depth of which an
odd and peculiar sort of miter was
taken, decorated with riblx-ns of all
possible and impossible colors. This
she solemnly placed upon her head, as
she had seen it done in the faraway
home, so lonfj apo, near the North Cape.
They then took chairs, side by side,
in their livinj'-room and waited.
After awhile friends arrived, many of
them wearirip odls and emls of ostunie
bro'i-.'ht from over the ocean scores of
years a?ro.
Tlien all, excepting1 the parents, ad
journed to the stable. colli-ctin;r around
the lxxly of the dead man, where re
freshments were served, and an occa
sional low, wailinjr sonfr was chanted.
After this they proceeded to the burial
ground ten miles away, and the last sa-1
rites were performed after the same
fcimple manner.
Strangest of all, the two leinrs most
interested still sat within doors, in sol
emn silence, decorated with their ijuaint
relics of dress. They diclined to ac
company the funeral cortege, and hours
afterward, when the mourners and
friends had returned, were sitting im
movable as though spellb Mind. Su;'K-r
for the entire assemblage concluded
this rather ghostly performance, but
the old people who had lost their toy
still silt silently as before, without an
expression of complaint or plea fur sym
pathy. Was this a lack of feeling' or
stoicism?
WOODCHUCKS AS CLIMBERS.
Tho Fact Ktabllli-l That They Can ant
Io Climb Trere.
Snmc people have Ion; asserted that
the woutlchuck can climb trees as read
ily as the bear can. and that in the
early summer they habitually seek the
branches of apple and other fruit trees
to feed on the tender ami juicy yonnsi
leaves. This assertion has been ridi
culed by others, wha say that it Ls im
possible for a -ivoodch tick tt climb a
tree, the animal not beiutf physically
capable of pcrforminj' such a feat.
That the woodchuck can and docs
climb trees, however, was demon
strated in a most unmistakable manner
in an eastern village a few lays airo.
H. Ikck, president of the Ihimmonils
rrt (X. Y.) lKard of education, was
sittinp in the door in the rear of a store
when he saw a biff woodeimck eonie
stealinp; alonp a pravelly knoll across
the creek, not more than a hundred
yards distant. The woodchuck st ppcd
at the foot of a tree, inspected it for a
moment and then climbed it with the
ease of a squirrel, but poin-r up as a
bear climbs a tree. IJeck called others
to witness the sijrht. The woodchuck
did not remain lonp in the tree.- and
came down, letting1 itself down rump
first. It then went up another tree,
where it could be seen makinr a ten-t
on the tender leaves. After enjoying
the novel sipht for some time a citizen
pot his rifle and picked the woodchuck
from its perch. The animal was very
fat, weiphinp nearly twenty pounds
HOW IT FEELS TO BE INSANE.
A Man Who Rwivcrril Ills Sanity Tells
His Emotions.
My wife came to see me, but she did
not try to have me released. I demand
ed a trial, but no lawyer would defend
me. Then I realized that the whole
community was apainst me. I became
so wroth that my anper seemed to hanp
over me like a dark cloud. It pressed
me to the floor and held me there. Men
came after a lonp time and took me
away, I thought to another prison.
One day a cat came into my cell, and
I tried to bite her. She made the hair
fly, but I killed her.
I don't know how lonp I remained
here, but one morninp the sun nsc and
shone in at me throuph the window. It
seemed to be the first time that I had
seen the preat luminary for months. A
mist cleared from before my eyes. My
brain b;pan to work and suddenly I
realized that I had been insane.
I called the keeper and when he
saw me he exclaimed: "Thank Heaven!"
and prapcd my hand. I was not lonp
in putt.np on another suit of clothes
and turninp my face toward home. A
physician said that I was cured and
every body seemed bripht and happy at
my recovery. I went home. My wife
fainted when she saw me and learned
that I had recovered my mind. I asked
for my little children, and two bip boys
and a young1 lady came forward and
pr-etcd me. I had been in the asylum
twelve years.
How Names Grow.
It is currently related in New licl
ford that several penerations apo a ship
was wrecked near there and only one
boy saved. As they did not know his
name, they called him Johnny CrapauiL,
and the descendant of this boy was con
pressman from Massachusetts, Hon.
Mr. C'rapo. To these may le added,
says American Xote6 and Queries, the
case of Judpe Poland, of Vermont, of
whom the story is told that his family
were Poles and bore an unpronounce
able surname; they were called the
Poles" and the Polanders." so that
the name pradually crystallized into
"Poland." There is also the name com
mon in the south, "Pabney," which is
supposed by the aristocratic owners to
be a corruption of the French "11'An
bipne," and probably first imported by
some noble Huguenot exile.
Xapolooa'a Nam la Italy.
The name "Napoleon, according1 to a
writer in the Nouvelle Revue, J le
found durinp the middle apes more fre
quently in central Italy than in north
ern Italy, but it was not heart) in Naples
ftseit. From this it is argued that the
appellation was used to designate
families that had removed from the
vicinity of Vesuvius, just as the CJae
tanL the ArianL, the Komani, the For
i lorn ana otn
their i vc
lorn and otners derived their nauics from
towns.
