marriage license on Tuesday had the cere

i On Saturday last a stranger hired a
horse and buggy from liveryman Noel, at
; CoaliMirt. to go a short distance and since
! then neither the stranger or rig has turned
up. The horse Is a chestnut sorrel with
I white face and white fore feet.

height of 12.". She was poorly dressed.
The body was crushed beyond recognition

ter withdraw ing from the business. "Mr.
Thompson is now sole proprietor and w ill

of Italian workmen from the new railroad
have lieen visitors to our town, for the
purpose of making purchases. Roots,
shoes and clothing seem to be the articles
most in demand and they apiear to know
a bargain w hen they see one.
Eleven farmers residing along the In
diana branch of the P. R. R. were sum
moned before a justice of the peace at In
diana for permitting their cattle to tres
pass on the ground of the company. They
were fined $:i.7l) each, after a hearing, and
advised to Keep I heir stock shut up in the
future.
The contract for taking the kinks out
of the branch from Kaylor's to Cresson
w as awarded to Messrs. Reilly &. McMan
us one day last week. They commenced
the work of building shanties, etc.. at once
and already a numiier of men are at work.
A steam shovel will be put to work on the
cut at Minister.
A niimbei of citizens from Hastings
Ixirough and Susquehanna and Elder
townships have ieen in tow n a couple of
days this week as witnesses before com
missioner John II. Rrown, Esq.. who Is
taking testimony for the puiMiseof settling
a tax muddle between the school districts
above mentioned.
, Mr. Solomon Strayer, of West Taylor
township, was struck on the arm by a club
in the hands of Ross Auuwalt on Saturday
evening and had that memlxT broken. Mr.
Strayer had ordered Anaw alt and several
others off his premises, and It was while
trying to make his orders effective that the
altercation occurred.
W. A. It. Little, Esq.. of Allegheny
township. will sell a large lot of personal
property consisting of horses cattle, slieep.
farm machinery, hay, straw, corn and nu
merous other articles su:-h as are usually
found on a well-stocked farm, on Satur
day, October 24th, at 10 o'clock A. M. Don't
forget the day and date.
Mrs. John Shepherd was fatally burned
w hile making apple butter on Wednesday
of last week at her home In Riirnside,
Clerrtield county. Reform assistance ar
rived the clothes were almost burned off
her, causing her death next day. Her
brother-in-law, W. Shepherd, and wife
were severely burned try ing to save her.
Constable Ream, of Iower township,
started from Johnstown on Monday morn
ing with Frank Jones, a resident of Rox
bury. a suburb of that city, who was
charged with assault and battery. While
waiting for the branch train at Cresson
Jones eluded the officer's vigilance and.
without saying good-bye, left for parts un
known. Mr. Celestine Farabaugh. the Carroll
trwn brewer, along with other Improve
ments idded to his establishment, is at
present putting in an engine for the pur
pose of furnishing the ower. The great
demand for the beer made at his brewery
is on the increase and necessitates the
running of the establishment to its utmost
capacity.
J. M. Xeubauer, of I in-ensburg. on
Thursday of last weeKentered proceedings
In the Westmoreland county courts against
his wife fur divorce, the grounds alleged
being adultry. Mrs. Xeubauer, before her
mairiage, was Miss Alice, daugh
ter of Mrs. Christina Foster, who.

Edward F. Cn.fton. a brakeman on the
Pennsylvania railroad, whose home w as in
Johnstown, was killed near IlilNid i
Saturday night. No one witnessed his
death and the crew of his train did not
miss him until they reached Coueniaugh.

near Hillside on Sunday morning and tak

Rev. Father James Donovan, pastor of t
the Catholic congregation at Huntingdon. I
Pa., died in that place on Friday last, aged
aliotit : years. The deceased was born in j
(oik, Ireland, came to this country alxrut
five years ago and was ordained as a priest
by Rt. Rev. P.ishop Phelan iu Pittsburg.
For a time he was assignwl to St. Peter's
Cathedral, afterwards was stationed at
Mi-Keesport, Pa., and In May last was
stationed at Huntingdon. He was a cutis- l

On Monday night, a resident of Mor
rcllville and his wife had a quarrel, w hen
the woman rushed up-stairs and drank
half a bottle of laudanum. Her husband
quickly followed, took the bottle from her,
and drank theother half. Fortunately the
woman vomited what she had taken, but
her spouse succeeded better with his suici
dal purpose, as the contents remained on
his stomach. He was unconscious for
some time, but will he all right again.

Mrs. Ann Noonan died at the home of (

na. on Sunday last. The-deceased was a
dauchter of the Jate Peter Kaylor, whose

On Weilnesday night alxuit half past ten
o'clock Ren. P. Thompson, a well-known
resident of this place, tixik suddenly sick,
snd though medical assistance w as prompt
ly at hand, it availed not, and he died in a
few minutes. He had lx-en visiting at the
residence of Mr. Thomas McXamara.

On leaving he took some Ice cream for his
friend Dr. Kennedy. When he reacln-d Dr.
Kennedy's office he remarked that he w as
very short of breath and sikui Ix-came very
ill. Dr. Kennedy gave him some medicine
but lie continued to grow worse and sxn
expired. The deceased and a son of the
late Major John Thompson, of this place,
w as fifty-nine nears of age was a traveling
salesmen by ix-ciipatlon. traveling for a
New York house. When not on the road
he made his home at the Mountain House.
He leaves to survive him two daughters,
Ixith married, residing in Philadelphia,

Nearly a Riot.
Johnstown, Pa., OctoN-r 21. The
Childs and Li-liuian factions' dispute over
tlie riglit to ox-rate a saw mill on a tract
of timlx-r land resulted in what for a time
threatened to be a- serious riot to-dav.
The shot iff of Cambria county, who tva-s
engaged by Childs. prx-ii-dcd to the dis
puted property this afternoon and ordered
his deputies to take possession of the mill.
He was met by armed farmers with revol
vers, guns, pitchforks and every conceiva
ble weajKin. The first man to cross the
lino was knocked sr-nscless, and tlie order
then given to the farmer to tire. Hefore
this was done, however, the sheriffs little
party retreated and the farmers are now
iu possession. Tlie Childs faction will now
have recourse to the law. In the mean
time the farmers guard the property atid
threaten bhxxlshed if interfered with.

w ith a chill. He was taken home w here

dying about an hour later.
Judge Kinkead was born in Centre coun
ty, near Milesburg, on t he .Tot h day of Octo
ber. 1S14. He came to this county in IS31
or lr,' and has lx-en a resident of Elx-us-bnrg
ever since. He was a saddler arid
hai uess-niaker by trade ami carried on
that business up till alxtut twenty-five
years ago w hen he gave it up. Iu 141 he
was elect. -d justice of the ix-are and serv-d
one term of live years. In 14 Judge Kin
kead was a candidate fot county commis
sioner, his opiMiueiit Ix-ing the late Daniel
Eitzingc r, of Chest Springs, and w hen the
Voti-s weie counted he was defeated by two
votes, the clos-st elect Ion ever held in Cam
bria county. Judge Kinkead recei viug l,;
votes, while his opHnent received 1.1NW.
In 1S.11 he was elected on trie Democratic
ticket as assM-iate Judge and served one
term of five years. In the spring election
of 1S.VJ he was elected justice of the peace
ami was re-elected at the end of each sue-ce-ding
term of five years ever since, six
full terms and two years in the seventh.
Iy his long residence in Etx-nsburg he was
known to every one iu the town and bad &
large acquaintance in the county. Hewas
resx--t-d and esteemed by all who knew
him. He leaves to survive him two sons,
