bastardy, were discharged on Monday on
their own recognizance to appear on the
first day of next term to take the benefit of

in Western Pennsylvania except Eliens
burg. On F'riday the Commission visited
Indiana and took a look at several loca
tions. The Directors of the Elicushiirg Agri
cultural Society have decided to erect an
other building for the exhibition of ma
chinery. The applications for space al
ready in are a certain indication that the
display of all kinds of machinery will lie a

The barn of Charles (Irissmore, in Pine
township, Indiana county, was burned to
the ground on Wednesday evening, of last
week. The barn w as filled with this year's j

John Prosscr, an aged gentleman who
lives near Sang Hollow, was bitten on the
finger by a rattlesnake a few days ago.

the finger which was bitten, and now he
apparently ex'i iences no ill effect from

The fellow who "didn t know it was
loaded" w as here on Tuesday. His name
is Captain Collier, of A I toon a, and while
fooling with a pistol In front of the grand
jury room in the Court House it exploded,
and more by good luck than the good sense
of the owner no person was hurt. The
ball struck the floor within a few Inches of
a man's foot, but luckily missed it.
The reunion of the Sons of Veterans In
this place on Friday and Saturday of last
j week brought a large crowd of jieople to
i town and was a very successful affair.
The town was tastefully decorated and.
w ith the exception of the weather, which
was not even "fair to middling." the re
union was a very pleasant one for the Sons
of Vets. The next reunion will ho held at
Johnstown. '
Messrs. John and Albert Flick have
leased the Cray Hotel in Carrolltown, and
will at once take charge of It and eater to
the wants of the traveling public. They
are both clever and agreeable gentlemen
who have hosts of friends, and all who

Mr. T. II. Heist, the proprietor of tlie
Maple Grove House of ElM-nsburg, was in
this city yesterday making negotiations
for securing control of the new Merchants'
Hotel. The terms were, however, unsatis
factory. Mr. Ihvist, with Mr. Cropp, some
years ago. rented the old Merchants Hotel
and had control for some time. He also
had control ot the 1 Sol ton House of Har
risbnrg, but recently sold out. Mr. Heist
would make an efficient and successful

On last Sunday afternoon while Mary
Tomchik, a domestic employed by Mrs.
Krinok, of Fifteenth ward. Johnstown.
was making a fire in the cooking stove, she
IHtured kerosene dl on the coal to hasten
the fire. The oil ignited from some smoul
dering coals in the stove and in an instant
there was an explosion and the unfortu
nate girl was enveloped in flames. Hefore
the flames were extinguished the girl was
burned so badly that portions of burned
flesh fell from her body with her clothing.
She died in a few hours after. She was
about nineteen years of age and had been

native of Hungary.
The crops of Washington and ireene
counties are suffering terribly from the
ravages of grasshoppers. Not only are the
field crops injured, but fruit is suffer
ing from the evil. Near Jefferson, (irescne
county, it is rcxtrl.d that grasshopers are
devouring the poaches, leaving the stones
hanging on the trees. Near Lone Pine,
Washington county, they have in many
fields eaten the silk of the corn. Many
turnip patches in that neighborhood are
eaten up. Garden stuff Is not escaping
their ravages and it is likely that there w ill
lie a fallingoff in Washington county's us
ually large celery crop as a result of tli
grasshopors' destructive work.

Towards evening a general fight ensued in

man, an Italian, was slabbed with a knife,
being dangerously injured and may uot ret-over.
He w as) taken to the Almushouse
where he is now lying in a precarious con
dition. His assailant escaied.
Since the above w as In tyjie we learn that
he Instead of being dangerously hurt, left
the Almshouse on Wednesday morning with
the Intention of going back to work.
