Mr. Ellas Towell, of Chicago, a brother
of Mrs. Griffith J. Lloyd, of Cambria town
ship, whs here, on a visit last week after
an absence of nineteen year.

and Staley. He is one of the sweetest

A house occupied by Eluior Berkepile
on one of the Cambria Iron Com pauy's
farm near Johnstown, caught fire from a
defective Hue about 8 o'clock ou Sunday
day evenin;; whilo the family were absent
at church and in a short time was a heap
of ruins. The loss on building and furni
ture is estimated at about tl.tMO
On Thursday night of last week, as
New York A Chicago Limited was pass
ing liens Creek, some one threw a bottlo
through the window of one of tha cars.
A Mrs. McKeever w ho occupied tho seat
next to the window was badly cut about
the forehead by the broken fclass. On Sat
urday two Hungarians were arrested
charged with being the parties who threw
the bottle.
On Wednesday morning of last week
the dwelling house of Michael Snyder, of
Carroll township, caught Ere about 3
o'clot k and, together with the entire con
tents, burned to tho ground, the family
barely escaping w ith their lives. The fire.
Is supposed to have originated from a de
fective flue. Mr. Snyder was absent from
home at the time, and tha members of tho
family were asleop when one of them was
aroused by the suffocating smoke, and on
ly in time to save the others, who made
their escape, by jumping from the second
storv.
James Fisher and wife of Altoona,
while going into their house ou Wednes
day, were ;.et upon by two drunken toughs.
The wife escaped into the house, but her
husband was knocked down and almost
beaten Into insensibility with an ax handle
one of the men carried. Seeing her hus
band being malterated. the wife ran out of
the back door and started down tho street
in search of the police. She was overtaken,
however, and, while one man held her, the
other took an as -handle and repeatedly
struck her over the head. Her face and
shoulders were badly bruised, and she Is
now in a very precarious condition. The
meu were arrested and gave their uames as
James McHaulek and John Doll.
Mr. Jacob Kralller, of East Cone
mauv'h, was taken suddenly sick, while at
his work iu the railroad yard at East Con
emaugh. ou Wednesday of last week, and
a physiciau summoned who administered
morphine pills. Mr. Frallier fell Into a
sbep from which he never awoke and not
withstanding the phy-delau was again
summoned, who did everything possible.
Mr. Itrallier never regained consciousness.
An autupy revealed the fact that Inflam
mation of tho kidneys which produced
uremic poisoning was the cause of stu
por and death and not an overdose of mor
phine as w as at first supposed. Mr. Brail
ier was the eldest son of Mr. Samuel
Brallier, of Jackson township, and leaves
a wife and several small children to
mourn his dvath.
