Tramps are said to be fairly swarming
along the line of the Pennsylvania railroad
from Pittsburg to Johnstown. During the
winter months they sought shelter at the
coke works principally, but now that warm
weather has come they have commenced to
tramp, and tramp thev will until "Old Bo
reas again commands them to ball.

feet. Lumbermen of experience say tbat
hese are the largest trees ever cut In Penn
sylvania. Tliey are monstrous big, straight
from the ground up with no forks or large
branches, as such trees usually have.
Oil Tuesday night Judge Johnston's
house was entered by thieves who carried
off some cream, provisions and canned
goods. On the same night, several shots
from a revolver were heard lu tbat vicinity,
and en Wednesday it was discovered that
one of tbe plate glass windows in tbe At
torney's room on second floor of the Court
House bad a bullet bole through It. It is
supposed to have been the work of tbe
gang tbat robbed tbe Judge's ice bouse.

Imagination supplied the odor of burning

-On SUDday last Mrs. Joseph Anderson,

the hands and body, and after great suffer

A building at Chestot bill, three Miles
east of lit oversvllle, Somerset county, coo- I
talning the post Oce. a general store and a
dwelling house, was burned on Saturday
morning about I o'clock. Tbe building was
owned and occupied by Mr. Ed. Lohr. wbo
was also the storekeeper and postmaster.

Mr. Jacob Bnrkey, of this lac, on
Monday last stepped on a board tbat bad
nail (.ticking through It. and a conse
quence, tbe nail passed through his shoe ecd
foot, coming oot near the Instep. Mr. Ber
key has a very sore foot and will be lame
for some time.
El ward Brishan and Jeremiah Wilt,
two of the men arrested at Stoystown. Som
erset county, for courterfeltlng'were tried
at Pittsburg and convicted, the former on
Tnesday and the latter on Wednesday last.
The eyldence'agalnst them was very posi
tive, the Jury being out only a few minutes.
All stamped envelopes which are spoiled
by mistakes committed In superscribing,
will be redeemed by the poetoffice depart
ment at their stamp value. Postage stamp
damaged by sticking together in warm or
damp weather, or from oth)r causes before
using, may be returned to the department
and their valje repaid to the purchaser or
exchanged for new stamps. All redeemed
envelopes are sent by the postmasters wbo
redeemed them to the department and re
cords of the same are Kept. These regula
tions are. we think, not generally known at
Urge, and their publication may be bene
ficial to a large number of people.
While a 13-year-old son or David
Vance, of the vicinity of Morris, Greene
eounty.Pa. , was cutting briers on bis fath
er's farm on April 20b. he found can that
had contained nitro -glycerine. The boy
took the can to the boose to show It to the
family, and proposed throwing a stone
afcainst IL Accompanied by bis mother and
some little children tbe boy went Into tbe
yard, and standing only a few feet way.

plosion followed and the boy was Instaotly
killed, nis clothing was torn to shreds and
his body fearfully cut by pieces of the can.
The mother was thrown to tbe ground and
her clothing torn off. She was also cot by
the flying pieces of tin. Tbe children were
thrown to tbe ground but were otherwise
uninjured.
The grand jury at Cbarabersburg. on
Monday completed tbe investigation Into
the tramp question which Judge Stewart
ordered and made a lengthy report to the
Court. Tbe report say s that compulsory
labor Is the only remedy to abate tbe nui
sance and predicts that when tbe t ramus
re put to woik they will soon leave tho
country. The jury find tbat th tramp bill
of tbe county dcring the last twenty years
has been over 100 00 and tbat in oce year
their boarding alone cost 13.000. They re
commend that the tramps be put to stork
at breaking stone In tne jail vard and tbat
failure to work satisfactorily be punished
by short rations. The Court said tbat tbe
County Commissioners woe Id give proper
consideration to the recommendations of
the grand jury.

ible and proper. The Court says :

of the damages to be awarded by the jury

Loretto, were named and on a ballot being
taken Mr. Gates was chosen Chairman by a

Tbe Directors ot tbe new borough of
Hastings requested to be allowed to take
part In the proceedings but according to a
decisioc of the the Chairman they were not
allowed to do so.
For County Superintendent J. W. Leech,
of Ebensburg. Thomas J. Ite!!, of Johns
town, J. S. Foley, of St. Augustine, and
John McCortulck, of Sunameralll township,
were named.
The first ballot resulted in tbe election of
Mr. Leech. The hallrt stood as follows:

agement of tbe almshouse during tbat time
has been noted fr tbe ability with which be
has at all times looked after tbe interests of
the peope. while the poor and suffering have
