much like the double card of the present
pattern. Tbe back folds are spilt diagon
ally and open out like a pointed star. The
four corners are folded and joined In tbe
centre, when the card Is ready for mailing,
with a piece of gummed paper- The card
welttbs less than half an ounce and will con
tain no rrore writing than the present
card, the only advantsge being greater
privacy.
C. C. Sherbodv, a well-known citizen of
Menc'oo, Westmoreland county, was found
dead at bis stable there Friday morning,
lie left borne Thursday fa a dog-cart to
transact some business at Scot td ale. and
while returning. It Is supposed, be fell from
the seat. Ills bead fell between tbe e pokes
of one of the wheels, thus choking him to
death. Tbe horse went borne, and next
morning his family was horrified to find him
dead In tbe position described. Mr. Sher-
body was about 35 years of age and leaves a
large family. He was well known through
out the county, having several times been a
candidate, on the Democratic ticket, for the
legislature.

Mr. Milton Speneer's little boy, Emmett,
recently fell from a chair and received a
painful injury on the bead.
A surprise party in honor of Frank and
Herman (tilmore. of Mountain Dale, was
given at their home on last Wednesday

Tbe public ichools of Reade township
opened on Thursday, the 13th lost. We
bave 11 schools In operation this term. Miss
Kaie E. H. Iluihes. of Indiana, has charge
of the schitol at Ulahgow. She comes highly
recommeoded, and will, no doubt, give
good satisfaction.
I understand Re v. Isaac K rider, of Bell
wood, paetor of the Luthern church at
Glasgow, has tendered Ms resignation as
pastor at that place.
We were shown some of the laraeet vege
tables in the line of potatoes and turnips
the other dsy, we bave seen for a long time.

Mrs. Miller, wife of Mr. John li. Miller,
of Carroll township, bad the misfortune to
fall while stepping out onto tbe upper porch
on Friday last, and received a severe frac
ture of the arm. Just above tbe wrist. At
latest accounts she was getting along as
well as could be expected.
Your correspondent bad the pleasure on
Monday of visiting tbe new shop of Messrs.
Wetzel Jt Bender, wagon and cariiage build
ers, on Church street. We not only con
gratulate them on tbe new building they
bave Just completed, but also on the work
they are turning out. Tbe probabilities are
that a blacksmith shop will be erected neit

Harry A. Luther, formerly of this place,
bas purchased the hotel of Mr. Nicholas
Lam bourn, of Nicktown, where, when tbe

eldest son of ex-Sheriff Luther, and be as
sures ue that his accommodations will be
fitst-class in every respect.
Our watchmaker and Jeweler. Mr. James
Harbrldge, who recently brought bis family
to this place, bas been giving entire satisfac
tion to oar people, not only socially but In a
business point of view.
Not a great while ago Mr. Celestlne StritU
matter, 'of Cairoll towbsblp. was tbe owner
of four valuable colts, but from a cause un
known to our local horsemen, tbey all took
sick, and on Tuesday of last week one died.
The other three are still bovertng between
life and death. This is a severe blow to
Mr. S., who took so much pride in them.
Some people suppose tbey were poisoned.
While a train made-op of about one dozen
cars was approaching Hastings on Saturday
tbe three latter, one of wbicb was a passen
ger car. containing about fifteen passengers.
were derailed, put fortunately no lives
were lost, and no serious injury done. In
the midst of the excitement Mr. Pat. Mc
Govern, who was out for the purpose of
paying off his emdloyes. jumped from tbe
car, leaving bis satchel, containing about
$3,000 behind him ; but wo are glad to state
that no "grabbers" were near at band,
therefore Mr. Mcti. recovered the satchel,
together with all the contents.

Julius Sticb, of Altoona, were not slow in
expressing their sincere regrets when tbey
learned of bis property io tbe latter place
being destroyed by fire on Tuesday morn
ing, an account of which you have, no
doubt, already In type.
Word reached Mr. Adam Stolz. of this
place. Tuesday evening, that his son, Mr.
Frank SloTz. was lying III with typhoid
fever In Philadelphia, where be bas been
employed for the past couple of years. We
bope to be able to report Lis recovery in
our next letter.
Mr. Steve Lentz, of Barr township, on
Saturday a week shot five wild turkeys, and
one day last week shot three more, on
tbe ridge of Mr. John D. Eger. In tbe aame
township. A few days ago a large bear
was seen in tbe same locality, but It Is
stated tbe hunters were afraid to attack
bruin with shot guns only, and be was per
mitted to go nnmoleted.
On account of the increase In business.
j Mr. D. A. Luther. Jr.. of this place, will
tear down bis present planing mill and
erect a t wo-htory building on tbe same
foundation. Tbe new building will be
beated by steam, and will contain all tbe
modern Improvements In machinery. This
is an evidence of prosperity on tbe part
of Mr. L. which bis many friends are glad
to note. May success attend him.
Mr. P. F. Brown, of Ebensburg, whose
estimable wife died on Monday morning.

Mr. Raymond Kaylor is now doing tbe

Mr. C. C. McCombie, of this place, bas
purchased tbe steam driller from Mr. Geo

busily engaged in sicking wells at Hast
ings.
Mr. Levi Luther, a respected citizen of
this place, who in bis younger days was
considered one of tbe most successful bant
ers In this section, located a coon tree tbe
other day not a great distance from town
and on Monday be and Scott Williams, after
cutting the tree, succeeded In capturing five
coons.
Mrs. Elizabeth Dumm. wife of Mr. Val
entine Dumm. of Carroll township, slipped
on the board-walk leading to tbe spring
bouse, thls(Wednesday) morning, and sus
tained a severe fracture at or near the
wrist.
Tbe borough school dignitaries met on
Wednesday evening and decided on some
necessary minor Improvements to tbe public
school building and advertise a letting for
furnishing coal and klodling for that insti
tutlon.
The racee here to day (Wednesday) re
sulted as follows : "Barney." of Johns
town, took first prize, and Mr. II. F. Eck
enrode's mare took tbe second. "Little Dan"
being left in tbe "lurch." Tbe best time
made was 3.2. On account of the recent
beavy rams tbe track was by no means in
good condition, consequently the low rec
ords. Mr. F. II. Barker was here this (Wedoee.
