A. Smith died at hl boardinj house In Phil
adeiphia, after an Illness cf six moDihs. io
the 7fJth year cf his aae. Dr. birith was a .
son of Gen. William K. Smith, a i'luladel-
phian by birth, who was a ripe scholar audi
rose to distinguished eminence as a member
of the Huntingdon county bar. From Hun
tingdon Gen. Smith removed to Bedford and
np to the election of YL Burer as President
in 1336, wa a regular practitioner in the
courts of this county. He died at an ad
vanced ane In Iowa where one of his sons
Is still living and is a very prominent man.
After Hr. Smith hed received a thorough
medical education be settled in the town of
Somerset about the time that Jermlab S.
Black, wu admitted to the bar of that coun.
ty. Tney became Intimate associates and a
strong feeling ef friendship was formed be
tween them which lantrd dd to Judge
B:ack's death In 1R83. 1c 133 Dr. broith
It ft Somerset and came to Eaausburg. where
he continued the practice of his profession.
In 1839 he was appointed Protbonotary of
the county by Gov. Porter and was reap
pointed la 142. Io 1843 he waa elected to
the lower branch of the Legislature from
this county, hut was not a candidate for re
election. In 1S37 or, ZS bo removed to Phil
adelphia where his wife subsequently died.
When the late eivil war broke not he was
appointed a surarou in the Union army
aud served in that capacity at Washington
and with llidarmy io Virginia until the end
of the war. For many years prior to his
death re filled the position of Deputy Pro
tbonotary of the Supreme Court of the State,
which be always retained, uncompromising
a Di-murrat as be was, although the Pro
thonotary himself was rquclly as pronounced
a Republican. He Inherited the
literary !
taste of Ms father acd Ms distinguished
uncle, Kichard Pern Smith, acd was what
is called a well read man." He was a Dern
ocrat cf the Andrew Jackson stamp, and
bts devotion to his party teemed to grow in
Intensity as advancing years crept over him.
He bad a warm feeling tor toe people of
Ebemtburg who knew and respected him
when he resided here, acd was in the habit
for meny years pait of pa j leg an annual
visit to th l place In September. When the
writer of this saw him la the Utter end of
May, when Le believed be was on the way
of recovering, he expressed a fervent wlsn
