The majority of ornithologists agree in ascribinz an erotic character to the soeri of birds ; not only the melting melodies, but klso those of their tones thai are discordant to the human ear, . . . x : are regaraea as love-notes, xjarwiu finally, saving some rtverses, came to accept this view. To be able to speak critically of the love-song, one should pay especial regard 10 the love-life of birds. It would be to throw water in to the sea to add to what ornitholog ical writers have advanced concerning the exceeding vital worth and cosmical signiGcance o! love. Nevertheless, I venture the opinion that the origin of the song-habit is to be found in other sources as well aa in this important fac tor, among which is the joy of life, manifested in an irresistible determina tion to announce itself in melody ; and tnat the song is more perfectly brought out in proportion as this feeling is more highly developed in the organization. Birds In freedom begin to sing long be fore pairing, and continue it, subject to interruptions, long afterward, though all passion has been extinguished ; and domesticated birds sing througU the whole year without regard to breeding time, though no female or companion ever be in sight. Such birds, born iu captivity, never feel the loss of freedom, and, if they are well taken care of, are always hearty and in good spirits. Tbe bird sings, to a large extent, for his own pleasure ; for he frequently lets himself out lustily when he is all alone. In the spring-time of lo7e, when all life is invigorated, and tbe effort to win a mate by ardent wooing is crowned with the joy of triumph, the eong reaches its highest pei feet ion. Cut the male bird a'so sings to entertain bis mate during tbe aiduous nest-building and batching, to cheer the young, and if be be a do mesticated bird, to give pleasure to bis lord and the providence that takes care of him, and in doing so to please him self. Lastly, the bird sings by habit, as we call it because the tendency is innate in the organs of song to exercise themselves. Advice to Hnsbands. Never talk in your sleep unless vou are sure what you are going to say. Don't be discontented. It is much easier to mate your wife feel that way. Never tell your wife that she is a charming singer nnless you happen to be deaf. Don't flatter yourself that you know more than your wife until you Lave got home from her funeral. Don't be too friendly with your prospective son-in-law. lie may think you intend to live wilh him after he is married. Din't try and fool your wife about drinking unless you haj pen to marry an idiot. Then it isn't worth while to do S3. Never tell your your wife how much batter some other women dress unless you have more money than you know what to do with. Never boast to your wife about tbe value of your pass experience. Your mother-in-law may settle herself down on you next week. Never find fault with the quality of your wife's cooking. You may pos sibly drive her to join some cooking club, which would be much worse. Keep A Cash Book. Evef fafmer should .keej a cash boo6. Let it be known that a merchant keeps eo books, and a wholesale dealer would at once refu to Credit him. I kaow that soma f&tmers think that a P'e:e of chalk and the back of a cellar doct is all that is necessary in the way of farm accounts, but they are greatly mistaken, and it is useless to say that they are not acquainted with book-keeping. Any man who can write can keep a cash book, any cheap memoranda book will answer. On one race of tbe book set down the amount of cash on hand, and follow with everything sold, the date of the sale and the sum received for it. On the other side, put down all the out-going or expenditures. At any time by adding up the two pages, you can tell what cash you have in your pocket-boak, and if there Is any disa greement, there must be an error some where. On other pages of tbe book could be recorded the contracts for la bor with workmen and any articles sold on credit. A farmer who keeps a book of this description will always know his financial latitude, as the captain of a vessel does when at ses, and he will be less likely to run on shoals or get invol ved among tbe breakers. The Diet or Strong Men. Tbe Roman soldiers who built such wonderful roads, and carried a weight of armor and luggage that would crush the average farm hand, lived on coarse brown bread and sour wine. They were temperate in diet, and regular and constant in exercise. The Spanish peasant works every day and dances half the night, jet eats only bis black bread, onion, and watermelon. The Smyrna porter eats only a little fruit and some olives, yet he walks of! with his load of a hundred pounds. The coolie, fed on rice, is more active and can endure more than the negro fed on til meat. The heavy work of the world is not done by men who eat tbe greatest quantity. Moderation in diet seems to be the prerequisite of endur ance. Donts Worth Remembering. Don't say ''You're a liar," nnle63 you are talking to a eick woman or a cripple. Don't say "I'M see your Let atd po you ten better," unless you dealt the hand yourself. Don't say "I will kick your lung In," because not being- an acrobat you are likely to fail. Dou't begin a story, 'I heard a good atory the otter day," unless you have a Btronjr grip on your victim's coat collar. Don't aay "I've sworn off and never will take another drink," unless you are talking to a Uiau that doesu't know you. FURQUHiR, York, Pa. I Invasion off he Sea. There a:e portions of the land along the sea coast wee re the waves are al ways fighting for dominion. Tbe wear ing away of tbe earth is very rapid unless these places are protected by artificial dykes cr by natural embankments of sand. On the east coast of England great chsnges have been wrought within a Tew hundred years. Where tbe old maps of tbat coast appear iucoirect, showing capes where there are now bays, tbe want of accuracy to day is not due to auy fault of tbe maps. The chore line has greatly changed, and villages nod churches have disappeared of are now to be seen under the waves. The most wonderful thing about all this is the slender means by which the powt-r of tbe sea is resisted. A layer of sand of only a few inches thickness, washed up upon the edge of a marsh, will bear all tbe pounding and beating of the sea in a storm, and be made all tbe firmer by what it has to endure. And yet the same sand, when it is dry, will drift before the wind like snow, and will seem as poorly fitted for a breakwater as would a snow bank. All along our Atlantic coast are to he found beaches like those on tbe east coast of England, which rest upon soft mud. The means of preserving these are as simple as the nature of the beaches themselves. Grasses that will grow in the sand, and will grow nowhere else, give the only protection that can be found, and, in most instances, all the protection that is needed. The variety grown is called marum grass in Eng land. The name evidently means sea grass. This grass was constantly sown by tba Dutch on the sand hills which line their sea shore ; and it is altogether likely that the practice of sowing it was introduced iDtoEogland from Holland in rery early times. There is said to be a widespread notion among U19 people o? Norfolk tbat some penalty attaches to the gathering of marum grass for any purpose. This must be a tradition from times when such laws were in force, for there is no law providing a penalty at present. After a great storm, In 1G0S, commis sioners were appointed to preserve the sea banks on tbe ea6t coast, ond it is likely they made local rules and regula tions for the keepirjg of the grass. As nature provided very simple means for holding the water and the sand, so the banks are threatened from a quarter from whicn daDger would hardly be ex pected. When the water is low, the rats pierce the banks with their holes, and these quickly enlarpe in the soft sand.eo that a single rat hole may prove the destruction of m. lis of embankrrent. One tbiEg which is not sufficiently taken into account by those who are in terested in dyking and reclaiming marshes is that the peaty soil, upon being drained, settles, and brings tbe surface much lowtr than before. Arti ficial dykes ueed to be made with this result in view. A (.'lever Huse to Catch a Thief. A story, describing the unique plan by which a rogue was discovered among the native troops of British India, is told by a veteran English officer. A com plaint was Drought to him of theft which had jupt been committed in tbe barracks, to the perpetrator of which there was not the slightest clew. The. next morning, on parade, tbe col onel passed along the line, giving to each man in turn a thin strip of bamboo, and when they all were supplied, he said with solemn emphasis : "ily men, there is a thief among you, and Brahma has revealed to me a way of detecting him. Come forward, one by one, and give to me yenr bamboo chips, and the guilty man, do what he may will have the longest." The soldiers, not a little startled at this mysterious threat, obeyed without a word ; but, before tbe iirst dozen bad Gled past, the colonel suddenly seized one of them by the throat, and shouted : "You are tbe man !" The Hindoo fell upon his knees and whined out a confession of the theft, while his terriled comrades salaamed to the ground before the dread Sahib to whom Brahma had given such a terrible power. When they had dispersed, another of ficer, who bad been looking on in silent amazement exclaimed : "I wish you would teach me that trick, colonel ?" "It is a very simple one," answered the colonel, with a smile. You see these bits of bamboo were all the same length, but the thief, fearing to get the. longest piece, bit off the end of his. just as I expected he would, and that 13 how I knew him." The Ladies Were Shocked. A story is told in New York club cir cles of tbe losses suffered by two of tbe brethern in an up-town church cod cre ation. One of them had lost his wife, the other a boat A delegation of sym pathizing maids of the Bible class resol ved to pay a visit to the widower to formally give expression to the sorrow and condolence. By the etnpidity of the sexton, who got tbe sufferers mixed, tbe ladies called at the residence of loser cf tbe boat instead of at tbe residence of the brother that had lost the dearly beloved partner of bis joys and sor rows. -We have come this eveiirg, dear brother,' began the spokeswoman, to tell you that we have heard with heart, felt recret of the terrible loss you've met. Time will, we hope, heal ' 'Ob. that's all light, ladies,' Inter rupted the brother, I don't feel as bad about it as you might suppose. She was an old thing, anyhow, and a bit cranky, and I long contemplated getting rid of her and securing the one I have m my eye. I once lost two at a time, but as there are plenty in the maiktt such a little matter as you are here about dou't 'give me an hour's concern !' Tableau.
