On a very warm day in early summer
I happened to be standing near a chick
en coop :u a back yard when I noticed
the bead of a very gray and grizzled rat
thrust from a neighboring rat hole, aud
concluded to watch the movements of
.a - e
the veteran. After a carerui survey o
tbe surroundiegs, onrold rodent seemed
recently placed before the chicken coop,
and looked a friendly invitation to tbe
thirsty old rat, which immediately
started toward her.
The rat bad not reached tbe pan be
foie five half grown young ones rushed
ahead and tried to be first at the water.
Tbe old rat thereupon immediately
made a leap like a kangaroo, and was at
tbe edge of the dish in advance of the
foremost of tbe litter. Then ensued a
remarkable accurance. The mother rat
raised herself on her haunches and bit
aud scratched her offspring so severely
whenever they attempted to reach the
water that they all finally scudded, evi
dently much astonished and frightened
at the strange and unaccountable be
havior of their mother. When the lit
tle ones were at a safe distance tbe rea
sjna for her extraordinary behavior
began to be revealed at once in the in
telligent action of the old mother rat.
She first wetted her whiskers in tbe
water, looked suspiciously about ber,
then very cautiously and carefully took
a dainty little sip or tbe liquid. She
tasted it aa tentatively and critlcly aa a
professional tea taster, and when she
was satisfied that it contained no pois
onous or deleterious matter she gave a
couple of squeals, wbicb broughtuher
young and thirsty brood to her side, and
all fearlessly drank to their fill. Now,
this old mother rat was experienced.
bad learned ber lessson in that school
thoroughly, and so she would not allow
ber young and untaught litter to taste
water wbicb might have contained rat
poison or what not until she bad satis
fied berstlf that the liquid was harmless.
JJoes not this look very like reason ?
The Heiress Hunter.
Nothing can be more contemptible
than tbe life of a man who makes a
show for a few years that he may marry
an heiress. He lives a purely selfish
existence ; be is a mere cumberer of tbe
ground. To be tbe accomplished man

He may be a convenient man to ask to

be must be one of those colorless, civil,
useless nonentities whom society loves ;
be must have no disagreeable family
connections. He will then be asked
where tbe heiresses go. He must be
seen at every tea, ball, reception ; he
must give an occasional theatre party ;
be must know bow to be mean, and
snub all tbe people who bave een civil
to bim, only inviting those of the high
est fashion who baye snubbed him ; be
must be a pure and perfect snob. He
will then be spoken of aa a young man
of tbe highest fashion and of excellent
manners. He must bave that air of

Aa to tbe quantity of light at the bot

Onions. Aside from the potato
crop tbe onion crop is the most impor
tant vegetable crop grown, and under
proier culture is an exceedingly profita
ble crop. They yield from SCO to CXl
bushels per acre, according to the nature
of the soil and culture, and rarely sell
for lees than 50 cents per bushel, while
they not unfrequenlly are worth as high
as one dollar. Tbe soil must i. ii,-h
and thoroughly and deeply pulverized.
A rich, loamy soil is the best. Manure
heavily with well rotted manure. Tbe
soil cannot be made too rich. Ii is
useless to try to grow onions on poor
soil or in a shiftless manner. A few
days neglect when the weeds are grow
ing rapidly, or a week's delay in sowing
after the ground is in a suitable condi
tion in the spring, will often ruin the
crop. There is no crop in which
thorough culture will bring larger
returns. A top dressing of wood ashes
applied after the second weeding will
be found to greatly improve the crop.
