On Tuesday evening, just after dark
Alice Maloney. a little dangbter of Mr:
Maloney, of this place, started from her
home to go to the store. When nearly rp

Editor Frf.em an. On Tuesday one of
most successful schools we have ever
had closed. Oar" teacher came among us an
entire stranger but has made friends of all.
She not only taught the hours required, but
kf pt those in the higher branches at work
until long after school hours. The class
consists of six who have pased a very cred
table examination.
The afternoon was taken np with songs,
recitations, esays. etc. The teacher of
fered several pnzs and the following per
sons each received a pr'z : i. B. nite,
Orr Adams and Maggie Hite. The school
was addressed by A. Wilson and T. S. Enap
field after which the teacher diemissed the
school with a fe? well cnosen remarks. To
say that Miss May Klllen had done her duty
would be telling bat half of the story, Ste
gave book to those that had none and gave
as mo 'h attention to small one as the large
one. Every one was sorry that school was
ended. n.

When we went to press on Thursday of
last week the case of the Commonwealth vs.
James Cooley, James N. Nagle, Jamt-s
Lynch and Thomas Duke for burglary and
larceny, Casper Carlr?, prosecntor, was on
trial. Jury found a verdict of guilty.
Judge Johnston eentencpd each or the de
fendants to pay a fine of 5100 and jointly the
costs of prosecution acid to each undergo an
imprisonment in the Western penitentiary
for eeven years.
The Grand Jury before their discharge on
Thursday made the following report :

The Grand Jnrv having visited the County
Jail, Poor nousp, etc , report as follows:
The Jail Is well conducted, but. theie scfms
to be a deficiency in the water closets; the
board walks in the' jail-yard are in a very
bad condition, and the iron railings around
the head of the stairs are broken and loose,

Larceny of some shoes from the Cresson A
Coalport ralroad station at Asbville. Jury
find defendant guilty. On Monday the
prisoner was sentenced to pay a fine of 520
and costs of prosecution and undergo an
imprisonment In th Western penitentiary
for a term of one year.
The first case calied on Friday morning
was that of the Commonwealth vs. Charles
Adams, colored. Carrying concealed weap
ons. Jury found dpfpndant not guilty but
that hp pay thp costs.
Commonwealth vs. the same dpfpndant.
AggravatPd assault and battpry. Jury find
dpfpndant guilty and recommended him to
the merev of the court. Sentenced to pay a
fine of 51 00, costs of prosecution and under

plead guilty. Sentenced to pay a fine of
5200 and costs.

At four o'clock on Friday afternoon tre
last case on the criminal list was reached
that of the Commonwealth against Gporge
Ankenbauer for the murder of Samuel Craig,
at Galll'zin. A jury was obtained from the
regular panel without the necessity of call
ing talesmen. The following gentlemen

Twenty-fo jr witnpssps wpre called on the
part or the Commonwealth and twenty-one
on the part of the defpns. Tho testimony
closed on Saturday afternoon at a quarter
past four and from that time nnfil 10 o'clock
at night was occupied by attorneys In their
pleadings. At 10 o'clock Court adjourned
urtil 8 o'clock on Monday morning, the jury
in the meantime being placpd in charge of
Constables Myers and Kline who put them
up at the B'air House. On Monday morn
ing at 8 o'clock the Jury were in their box
promptly and Judge Johnston delivered his
charge, oecpylng about rorty minutes, when
they retired to deliberate. The prison
er, along with his wire, sat patiently await
ing inside or the bar for the return of the
jury, but at 10 o'clock Court adjourned until
2 o'clock without any sign of the return of
the jury. At half past one the ringing of
the Court House bell announced the fact
or the jury being ready to render a verdict
and at once the movements of the people on
the street were turned to the court house, all
anxious to hear the verdict The cryer called
the Court, the cl rk called ovpr the names of
the jurors and when asked if they htd agreed
upon a verdict announced that they had
found the defendant not guilty.
Nienolas Mulherron who was convicted of
burglary and larceny, was on Monday sen
tenced to pay a fine of 5100 and costs of
prosecution and to undergo an Imprison
ment in the Western penitentiary for a term
of one year and six months.
