FARM a5I IIOISEHOLH.
In cleaning silver, kerosene may be
used with advantage.
Carpets may be brightened by dusting
with a dark flannel mop.
Egg stains can be removed by rubbing
with common table salt.
Hub oiled furnituie with a woolen
cloth saturated with oil.
stains on wood can be removed with
strong vinegar or salts of lemon.
Leather chair seats may be revived by
rubbing them with well-beaten white of
Sandpaper will whiten ivory knife
hardies that may have become yellow
with age.
White paint that has become discolor
ed may be nicely cleaned by using a lit
tle whiting in the water for washing.
A biilliant black varnish for iron
stoves and fireplaces is made by stirring
ivory-bUck into ordinal y shellac var
nish. A good cement for china is ordinary
carriage varnish. If you put together
neatly the fracture will be hardly per
ceptible, and is not affected by water.
Galvanized iron pails are not desira
ble receptacles for drinking water. The
zinc coating is quickly affected by the
water, forming a poisonous oxide of zinc.
For cleaning brass belonging to ma
hogany furniture use either powdered
whiting or scraped rotten-stone, mixed
with sweet oil, and rub on with a cha
mois skin.
A window open a alight distance both
top and bottom, and a chimney draught
also open, are the only sure ways of
keeping rure air in a sleeping room
who e doors are closed.
Vinegar is better than ice for keeping
fish. By putting a little vinegar on the
Gah it will keep perfectly well even in
very hot weather. Fish is often im
proved in tlavor under this treatment.
To prevent polished steel from rusting
after cleaning, and when not iu use,
take a cloth, with a very little sweet oil
on it, and wipe the articles over po as to
slightly but evenly oil the surface.
Iron rust is readily removed by equal
parts of common salt and cream taitar
moistened with water and applied to the
stained spots and placed in the sunshine.
Moisten as it becomes dry for two or
three hours.
To make nut cake, take three eggs,
one and one-half cup of butter, one-half
cup of ini'.k, two and one-half cups of
fl.ur, one and one half teaspoonfuls f
baking-powder, one cup of the meats of
any kind of nuts.
The following is recommended as one
one of the best cures for a cold : One
ounce paregoric, one ounce spirits cam
phor, two ounces castor oil, and three
ounces of molasses. Shake well and
take a tables xionful three times a day-
Those who grow orchard grass should
remember that it is very early. It should
be cut or eaten before the seed-stalk be
comes hard. Thus treated it can be cut
oftrner than any other grass, and when
well seeded on rich ground will make an
astonishing amount of feed per acre.
The following will give satisfaction
for cleaning cloth : Take half an om c
each of glycerine, alchohol and sulphu
ric ether, two ounces of aqua ammonia,
half an ounce of powdered castile soap,
and add w ater enough to make one quart
of the mixture. Use with brush or
sponge, and rinse with pur6 water.
Stuffed potatoes : Choose some large
potatoes, peel them, cut a small piecu off
the top of each, and scoop them out care
fully with a knife and fill them wi:h
sausage meat ; replace the top pieces.
Grease a baking pan with butter and lay
the potatoes side by side in it, with a
little lump of butfer between each ;
bake them in a hot oven.
A very delightful and easilyfprepared
dessert is one of bananas aud whipped
cream. Cut the bananas into small
slices, and over this jour cream, beaten
till it is very stiff. Do not sweeten the
cream until after it is whipped, and then
ase the pulverized sugar. Always fla
vor with a little sherry or brandy. Five
bananas and a pint of cream makes an
ample dessert for six people. Serve in
colored dish if possible. If one has no
servant make this just before going to
the table, and set aside on the ice ;
otherwise, do not let your cook begin it
until after you are seated at the table.
To make snowflake cake take one cup
of butter, three cups of powdered sugar,
one gill (half cup) of sweet milk, four
cups of flour and the whites of nine eggs.
Mash fine enough soda to make one level
teaspoonful, and add it to the flour ;
also, add three scant teaspoonfuls of
cream of tartar. Sift three times.
Cream the butter, add the sugar gradu
ally, then the milk, next the flour, and
last, the whites of the eggs beaten to a
stiff froth. If the cake seems too stiff
to beat easily use part of the whites,
putting in alternately a spoonful of flour
and a little of the whites, but reserving
the greater part to add after the flour is
all in and thoroughly beaten, as it des
troys the lightness of eggs to stir the
cake much after they are in. Bake in
layers and use any filling desired.
We would educate the girls in such a
way that they can step beyond the walls
of their homes and make themselves
useful. They should be made familiar
with horticulture in all its deparments;
bee keeping can be made very profitable ;
the care and rearing of poultry are with
in their scope, and scores of other useful
accomplishments which women educa
ted in all these things, can earn enough
to hire all be help she needs, both in
doors and out, aud often bring still more
to the Tamily treasury than her husband
cau from his farm, besides the comfort,
and luxuries thus obtained from her en
terprise ; and what is of vastly more
value to her and her household, she will
get the sunshine and open air, retain
perfect health and reason, live a long
and useful life, rear her family in com
fort, who, and the world, will rise up
and call her blessed. Does this seem
like an idle dream ? Those who are
Interested in the coming generations of
women who will live upon the farm, can
I?ave no more enduring monuments to
their memories than a school well estab
lished for their education in all those
things that will make women something
more than mere drudges er machines
m-tke them noble, useful women in the
highest, .truest wise. Am.

SCROFULA
Usually develops in early life,
and is a peculiar morbid con
dition of the system, usually
affectine- the glands, often re
sulting in swellings, enlarged
joints, abscesses, thickening
of the lips, enlarged neck, sore
eyes. A scrofulous condition
is often hereditary, but bad
diet, too free use of fat meats,
bad air, want of sunshine and
nourishing food will induce
it. Some people are troubled
vnl'n scrofulous swelling of the
glands, and with ulcers and
kernels, which may cause very
little pain ; others may have in
ward scrofula, scrofula of the
lungs, scrofula of the spleen,
scrofula of the kidneys, and
scrofula cf the bones. BUR
DOCK BLOOD BITTERS will
drive away any case of scrofula
and not to appear in another
place, for their action on the
bJood and bowels will carry the
disease entirely from the body.

idea, t be solid crust of Hie earth exteDds
down from teu to furiy miles, there be
ing beoealh that a t:r awr or less thick
ness of plaotic malt-rial, from melted
ruck, eic under high pressure, while
the crust of the earth is all the time in
a hit$h state ot tension, from the gradual
cooling or li e interior, causing cavities,
and allowiiiK the superincumbent earth
(O riowd down cinaer lo its heated core.
"Another t iimry is that the access of
wa:rr, i.y pei cUliou ilnough the sur
face of the earth, to these subterraneous
ovens, it is thought, may in some cases
cause explosions, dislocating vast quan-
tlties Of ma'-r-Ilal, xtnl perhaps by Open
ing communication with the still bolter
P irtiOll yet lower down, be the Cause Of
the most destiuctive volcanoes.
"These explanations, while being to a
small extent h pothetical, accord with I
aH that is known by acknowledged au- j
thorilies. Another significant fact is j
that they afford th best theory yet ad- ;
vanced to account for the Charleston
earthquake, which has agitated the
minds of people all over the globe."
The geologist, waxing warm to his
subject, insisted that have hardly !
mnde a pin-scratch upon the crust of the i
earth. The further we go down the !
warmer it Is. An illustration of this
is supplied in the fact that the artesian
weiln supplying the city of Paris from
d eih of nearly eighteen hundred feet
yield water of eighty-two degrees Fah
renheit and the lower levels of the Com
siock mines have almost uriform tem
pera: ure of one hundred degrees Fah
renheit. "It is estimated the heat increases
at the rate of one degree for every fifty
feet, ; nd this would give a temperature
to melt the hardest rocks in less than
ten miles. On this theory the present
volcanic aud eaith quake regions of the
globe are located along the axis of those
supposed wrinkles or corrugations from
the contraction of tne crus-, thought to
be at present in the state of greatest
tension. The most marked of these are
down the east coast of Asia, including
the Japan and Philippine islands, and
extending to Java, where the great
earthquake of occ urred. Another
niso extends down the Pacific coast of
North and 8 uth America, the manifes
tations of which have been very light in
the northern part since the commence
ment of historic timrs, but oi whose
presence in South America we have had
naiy (linking evidences.

A Little Loot ldTlce.
Yes, my eon, there are rrn who, la
the morning of their lives, tz- brightest,
strongest, bravest days tbey have to
lire, go through various courses, and
come out reformed, and all right at last.
There are some men who do this. Occe
in a while yon will find one and you
think you will do just as he did.
Bat the hundred or the thousand mea
who started in with him and never got
through! The swimmers whD plunged
into that Turbulent Jsea of d!sipate4
recklessness with, him, and never gainel
the shore again but went Cmn In lbs
combing billows and the yeasty break
ers ! How about them? Arn't yob
more than likely to be one ot tLe multi
tude, than you are to be the exception ?
I tell you, my hey. ten young fellows
of your ape may en-irk together in the
prodigal business, with good capital and
the usual stock of red paint for munici
pal decorative purposes ; their bands are
steady, their braids are clear, their hearts
are brave, and they are ambitious and
hopeful and earnest ; they only want ta
have their racket and see the town be
fore they settle down to bard, steady
work. They are not going to be drunk
ards. They're all right ; they don't
believe in this sort of thing at all, but
they are young, and it's quiet on the
farm with nobody but old folks and the
elder brother, and they want to travel
and see the world a little before thev be
come good citizens, props to society,
and pillars of the church. And by and
, by. when the state and society and the
, church wants them and needs them, we
look for the ten and they are not found,
returning to give glory to God for mercy
and saving strength and cheering grace,
save the stranger, the Samaritan. And
we ask, "W here are the nine ?"
My dear noy, there is more hope for
i the stranger, forthestrejt waif, born in
! the haunts of vice and walking in its
I ways all hiB life, than there Is for the
1 yOUng man Who, born in the light and

his back deliberately upon wisdom and
virtue, and intelligently makes vice his
choice. The stranger, charmed with
purity and health and cleanliness so new
and beautiful to him, comes back ; but
the nine, my son ?

Castle buildiDS ives us a habit of ad

When a man becomes 6rly convinced
