Men W ho Lire in Trees,
Ir. Louis Wolf, who made the sensa
tional discoveiy a while ago that the
Sackuru Iiiver afforded a more direct
and easily navigated route to Central
than the Congo, made another discovery
in the course of the same journey, which
was quite as remarkable, if not quite so
important.
On the banks of the Lomami River,
far toward the center of the continent,
he says he found whole villages that
were built in the trees. The natives, to
protect themselves from the river when
in flood, partly, and, partly, to make It
more difficult for their enemies to sur
prise them built their huts on the limbs
of the trees, where the thick foliage al
most completely hides the structures
from view. The inmates possess almost
the agility of monkeys, and climb up or
descend from their little houses with
astonishing ease. It is believed they are
the only Africans yet known who live
in trees.
In B-rneosome of the natives are said
to live in trees, and Mr. Chalmers, in
his book on New Guinea, tells of a uurr;
ber of tree houses that he visited on that
island. These huts, which are built
near the tops of very high trees, are used
for look-out purposes, or as a place of
re.uge for women and children in case
of attack. They are perfect little huts
with sloping roofs, and platforms In
front, to which extends the long ladder
by means of which the natives reach the
huts. Mr, Gill describes one of these
houses which was used as a residence.
He says it was well built, but that it
rocked uncomfortably in the wind.
The Blrthplnce of Abraham.
Not far from Aleppo Is sit nated the
lit tle town of Orfah (the ancient Ur of
Chaldees,) which is of great historical
interest, it having been the birthplace
of the patriarch Abraham. There are
few Jews In this place, but the Arabs
still point out a small building lying
outside the town, which they declare
to be the house wherein Abraham first
saw the light., and which they therefore
term Tiit El-Chalil (the house or the
friend of God.) It is most improbable
that the actual house should have stood
for thousands of years, but the build
ing in question Is of great antiquity.
By its present owner, an Arab peasant,
as well as the Arabs generally, it Is
held in the utmost veneration, the more
so since it is feared that within a few
years- it will fall to the ground.

ard !t.st night tn a more congenial cl m-i
to spend the winter. Captain I.mt. Wr.
Clerk observed that spverai fl-icks came
ilown the Monongraht la Valley, which
is out of their regular courne from the
lakes to the gulf. Captain Clark said
be never knew them to come down the
Mo:;ongahela but severe storms or
very cold weather followed, "and we'll
have it before Sunday next, I think, he
added.
J iititor John Boru, of the City Hall,
Pittsburg, believes in geese as weather 1
indicators, and has made note of their
movements for years. "If," he said, J
"you keep the breast bone of a goose,
either wild or tame, and at the approach
of winter if it gets soft, the weather
will tie mild ; if it becomes hard, cold
weather is sure to follow. I know lots
cf farmers who keep goose hones as some
do thermometers, and watch them as
closely for weather indications. If the
geese fly South early in the fall it is a
sign of an early winter ; but if late of a
late winter. This year the geese are
late and 1 don't look for cold weather
very soon."
Another gentleman said that if the
geesa fly high it indicates fair weather
If they bug the ground in their pas-age
it is a never failing sign of a storm, and
they are flying low so as to be near shel
ter when the storm breaks.
A young man from Clearfield county,
who has always lived on the line of the
geese's flight, says that all the claim
they have as weather prognosticators is
that their flight South indicates cold
weather, and their return North mild
weather. Th-ir fly.ng high or low in
dicates nothing. This is general'y
owing to the elevation of the land over
which they pass.
"Wild geese," he continued, ''do not
fly in a straight line by any mvans, but
in the form of the capita! V. An old
gander always leads and two columns
follow in single file, slightly at right
angles, two males bringing up the rear
of the columns. The fact that they
come down the Monongahela indicates
only that they are somewhat out of their
course, which often happens, and 1
don't look for any change in the weather
on that account. It takes the birds
about sixty hours, in fair weather to go
from the lakes to the gulf, and do rot
alight during the entire passage, except
when they lose their way or are caught
in a storm.
A Turkey Hen YTho Kept on Trjlng.
Mis. David Simpson, II wkinsville,
Ga., had a turkey hen which Iid thir
teen eggs when the buds began to show,
and the eggs were taken from the nest
and batched by a chicken hen. As
soon as her turkey henship missed her
eggs she went to work and laid some
more, upon which she sat and hatched a
brood, which was a few days afterward
destroyed by hogs. Not a wbit taken
back she showed her fpnnk and laid
eight more eggs and sat upon them
awhile, when her liege lord, the gobbler,
lost his manliness and in his Rssumed
effeminacy took the incubation abreast
his own bosom and mortified the "lost
cause" of the female to such an extent
that 8he sat by his side for three days,
and then, out of pure grief, died.
The eccroaching gobbler finished the
incubation process, and now he, in his
widowhood, is scratching for his ten
day old family, which is his duty.
Why a Drunken Man Escapes.
One sometimes sees a drunken man
pitched violently from a horse, and
when the bystanders rush to the spot,
expectirg to find him dead, they are as
tonished to discover that be has been
but little injured. Ic his ".Scrambles
Among the High Alps," Leslie Stephen
tells the story of a guide who. while
drunk, fell over a prec:pice so deep that
a fall over It seemed almost certain
death, and who yet sustained little
jury. Stephen accordingly gives hi3
readers the advice either not to fall over
a precipice, or to get thoroughly drunk
before doing so. The reason of this
immunity is that the nerve centres are
so much paralyzed in the drunken man
as not to be affected by the shock of the
fall, which in a sober man, would have
acted npjn them so violently as to stop
the heart, arrest the circulation, and
caase instant death.
Rapidity of Tralrle Fires.
A prairie Gre that originated on the
line between Hughes and Sully counties,
D.-ikota, some of the time traveled at
the rate of twenty miles an hour before
a fierce southern gale. A farmer who
had put off hi3 shoes, saw it apparently
two miles distant, and before he could
clothe his feet the fltmes were on his
fields, and all he could do, with the ut-
most haste, was to get as many of his '
horses and household goods as possible
upon a garden patch covered with vege j
tation, whither his family had fled, and !
see his houses, stables and over twenty j
stacks of grain burn, without the power i
to save anything. In seven hours it had !

check it. It passed over portions of
thirty townships. In its devastating
course it did not probably find the grass
over twelve Inches high in any continu
ous tract of twenty acres. Plowed fire
guards from ten to thirty feet wide were
leaped, roads offered no obstruction to
it, while the drought that had prevailed",
for months had made tLe beds of streams I
its most dangerous allies. Tbree of
these fiies denuded the country of over ;
two thirds of the range of cattle, and
swept away property the value of which
can hardly 1 guessed. The Inflammable ,
chaiacter of the grass Is such that a fire
does not end with the destruction of the I
crop, but it destroys the very roots of
the grass, parches and burns the soil and
leaves it in no condition to bear a crop
the succeeding year.
