The old-tiro" idea chat he was the best cowboy who returned from a hunt with his horses the poorest and their backs the most extensively bruised and skinned has exploded, says the HUickrnan, of Miles City and stockmen now want men who can take care of horses as well as riue them hard when necessary. There was a time when a cowboy thought it a dis grace to return from a month's work with his string of horses in a condition fit to be used without rest, whether he had had any paiticu'.arly hard woik to do or not; hence he made it a point to ride hard, regardless of the necessity of doing so. If relieved from guard to go to dinner he must go at full speed to camp and jerk his horse up suddenly while on a dead run when he reached the camp. lie did the same when he returned from camp to the herd or from one place to another. But that time Is vast, and the demand i now for men who can ride hard when necessary and at other times favor their horses and keep them in condition to do good work when there is a rush. About the easiest wav for a cowboy to get di?charged in this country ia to display a well-develop ed habit of dashing his horse about un- reccessarilv. run them fifteen miles to town and back during a night when the round-up party is camped that near, just for the nurrosd of makinir a night of it, or to leave them where the grass is poor just because it would be a little more trouble to put them on good feed. This is as it should be, for, not considering the humane side of the question, the maintaining of good cow horses forms no inconsiderable part of a cowman's expenses, and he should expect the same care on the part of his general manager in economizing in other expenses. This does not mean that horses must not be ridden out of a walk. It simply means that when it it is not necessary to ride hard to properly work the held, horses mnst not be abused and dashed about just for the fun of the thing. The gen uine cowboy oucht to have that manly admiration for his horse that character izes every true horseman, and he should never hesitate to ride as hard and as long as occasion requires. lie should for hiaowu pleasure avoid the abuse of a good horse by unnecessary hard iiding or the want of attention. A due amount of exercise lends to in duce normal sleep, and such exercise lu'bd. not be. of a violent character. A walk of two or three miles daily is suf ficient, and is perhaps as much as a busy man can find time for. A ride on horse back, the l'almerstonian cure for gout, is probably the lest form of exercise for those whose minds are constantly at work. It has been well said that a man must come cut of himself when in the saddle. He is forced to attend to his horse and to notice the objecta he meets. Walking may be a merely' automatic process, and afford little if any relief to the mind, and carriage exercise may be practically valueless, if the mind la not diverted from what had previously occu pied it. The old idea ot the healthy effect goats have upon stabled horses is only one phase of a great truth, that it takes the emanations of an active life to perfect every other life. Cattle should be pastured near or In conjunc tion with hogs and horses. The action of one upon another is always beneficial; ard the young, playful and Bociable al wavs make friends with each other In such a way that much future Inconven ience may be spared the owner. Fui Bheep and young cattle together and each will grow In strength one-third faster. Put horses and goats or even young cattle in the name lot and each will grow the better, will feed easier and will grow with finer results. When ever the natural instincts of domestic animals can have play they tend to con fidence and general affection for all liv ing forms. A cat is the only thing which loves no other animals; if it en dures them it Is a stretch of magnan imity which actually contradicts its hon est nature.
