all self sustaining, no fighting or boisterous

Mn. Editor --I was Informed on Tues
day last that a report Is In circulation at
Portage and in Its vicinity, that while 1 was
at that place on last Friday week I stated in
a conversation at Jesse McGough's hotel,
that a coal miner ought not to be paid his
wages oftener than at the end of every two
months. I have no acquaintance with the
person who Invented this story and started
It on Its travels In a locality where the min
ing of coal Is carried on extensively, giving
employment to a large number of men. and
which Is, therefore, calculated to Injure me
In the Legislative campaign now In pro
gress. I simply desire to say to the miners
at Portage, through the Freeman, that the
charge Is false -basely and meanly false. I
had no conversation whatever with any per
son either in Jesse MKJough's hoU?l or any
where els at Portage about the payment
of coal miners' wages, and never enter
tained or expressed the view In reference
to that question which the report referred
to falsely attributes to me.

"Lovers fovf and maidens five : a pto
kt of the ai.i.echest mountains," by
Jrnr Chambers. Price 25 cents. Phil
adelphia : Porter Coates.
This love story of Cresson Springs reawa
kens all the old fascination that a visitor to
that beantlfnl mountain resort has experi
enced. Tbe weird and romantic localities
are described in a gay and vivid manner ;
many of tne lost tales of the Alleghenies
have been rescued from oblivion and upon
the pretty thread of a love tale a valuable
collection of historical and topographical In
formation has been grouped. A really
novel Idea Is the foundation of the story.
Four young men go to Cresson to pass a
summer month and they find four charming
girls. At first there is harmony ; but a firth
girl, entirely outside the group, resents a
slight that has been put upon her and suc
ceeds in disorganizing the party to such an
extent that only one conple marry as they
originally hoped. Some admirable pictures
of clever yonng women are drawn, and sev
eral keen hits are made regarding the soci
ety young woman, who manages her pa
rents. It Is In every way a clever and read
able volume One can enjoy tt at a sitting.
The fifteen original pictures by J. B. Sword.
N.A .and F. C. Schell give it additional
valne. Many crisp epigrams are scattered
through the "pages that would well repay
quoting, but it would be unfair to our read
ers to deprive them of the pleasure they
will derive in picking out the bright sayings
for themselves. To them we say : "Fall to,
yon have an enjoyable feast before you."
