This beautiful town is built on the banks
of the Clearfield creek, in Clearfield county,
Pa., and is distant about two miles from the
Carabrta county line. Its chief business is
in coal and lumber, yet there are many
other branches of industry carried on here
that in the aggregate excel these two impor
tant items Millions of feet of lumber haye
floated past here In the last few weeks on
its way to Eastern markets, thus giving em
ployment to hundreds of men that herd and
drive those logs the same as our Western
ranchers herd and driye their sheep and
cattle. After the logs follows the ark (not
Noah's, but the driver's ark). This is a
small house built on the water and made
comfortable for the men at night. Here in
this home is where the benighted traveler
will find genuine hospitality. Among a jol
ly good hearted set of our Clearfield county
men.
The coal mines here employ about500 men
and their great boast is that they employ no
Imported labor. (But alas I at present writ
ing our mines are idle, and our ovens are
cold).
It would cover too much space in your
valuable paper to give a description of our
minor industries in detail, suffice to say tnat
in a few weeks you can Ret anything in
wood from a brush handle up to a barn
frame, from a hickory bottom chair to the
finest mahogany dressing case. Anything
you want in iron or steel. The best of
building bricks are made here and ere long
fire bricks will be shipped from this point,
all our own manufacture.
In point of attraction we have all the
heart could desire, beautiful scenery, fish
ing, boating, hunting, good hotels, good res
taurants, good places of amusement, good
evrything but far above all, good people.
The chief attraction of our town is health.
Few people die here tiom disease, and only
one funeral in six months In a population of
1,700. Think of that, ye invalids.
Our town is easy of access, one railroad
alrpartv in operation and another almost
