thew Hauser and Jacob (ianns were en
gaged in mining coal and were in a room
together, they were suddenly, without
warning, crushed by a fall of coal. They
were mining tinder the coal, and Oanns bad
Just reached back for a pick, when the
mass of coal fell, catching Hauser entirely
under It and partially catching Ganns, who
succeeded In getting ool and giving the
alarm to the other miners, who hurried to
the scene and quickly released nauser,
who was lying on one side with his bead
crushed In. and inst about expiring. Ills
body was taken to his boarding house.
Mine Inspecor Eyans, of Johnstown, was
notified of the accident, and visited the
mine, and he attributes it entirely to care
lessness, the two men having been warned
about an hour 1 revious to its occurrence of

Dear Freeman : The "kiog blizzard"
which struck ns about two weeks ago so In
delibly impressed Itself upon our memory
that it will not soon fade from our fond rec
ollection. Onr public highways were blockaded by
huge drifts of snow whose culminating
peaks towered high above the fence-tops.
Travel was suspended. Egress or ingress
by any means was impossible for a few days,
and we were an effectually snowbound
people.
To add to the gloominess of the winter
scene, the tbeimometer fell away down to
22. while the byperian blasts sent their
merciless messenger into the homes of the
distressed, painting the sorrowful picture
cf desolation in its superlatiye shades.
But now a more cheerful aspect rules.

' at his residence in this place, on Saturday
afternoon last. The deceased was born In
this place on the 23d of July, 1820, In the
fame hons In which he died, and was at the
time of his death In the fi6th ypar of his age.

The ticket office of the Baltimore A Ohio
Railroad Company at Somerset was entered
on Monday night or Tuesday morning by
burglars, who succeeded In gaining an en
trance by forcing the lock on a side door to
the office.
They drilled two holes throught the door
of the safe into the lock, and inserted suffi
cient powder to blow off the door, when they
had access to the contents, consisting of
railroad tickets, papers, Ac. They then
rifled two Urge trunks, one of them belong
ing to Mr. Thomas C. Shoemaker, of this
place, who had left it there the evening
previous, intending to take It with him on
the train the next morning ; he having set
tled np the business of the Messrs. T. & P.
Collins at that placfr, and was removing to
Mahai oy. Schuylkill county, where they
have a railroad contract to complete. From
his trunk the burglars took a new suit of
clothes, a large gold ring with a black set
mounted with the letter S, a diamond
shirt stud worth about f2O0, and a collection
of odd and rare coins that Mr. Shoemaker j
had gathered up, worth about fifty dollars. I
The other trunk belonged to a Baltimore,
shoe drummer, and contained a collection nf
sample sho?s, to which the burglars helped j

nial and social In his disposition, honest in
his dealings, and was a rood husband and a
kind parent. lie leaves a wife and seven
children, three sons and four daughters, to
