to have been one of bitter controversy, he
feared the General would find it, difficult,

members of his congregation he must for

The General writes that he asked the Rv.
Doctor to give him until the next day to
consider, and that night, as he writes, he
spent hours in recalling the past and the ac
tors in it, and he details many of the bitter
animosities that came tc him that night, and
names those with whom he was engaged In
them, aud says with great earnestness, that
he forgave this one and that one, and con
cludes that it was very hard to do, but that
ne nad thought it all over and even forgives

prayed with him long and fervently. It was
arranged that on the next Sunday General
Jackson wou'd be received into the church,
and as the cWcvman was leaving. General
Jackson says In this letter, he repeated that
he had freely forgiven his enemies, hut that
he could not forgive the enemies of his dear
wife.
These letters, from which the above Is
given In substance, are full of interest, and

countv courts a week ago. It seems that In
May last. P. P. Dowiins. a contractor on
the South Tennsvlvania railroad, undertook
