Jumbo, tub Great Elephakt, Killed.
About six o'clock. Wednesday evening.
Sep. 16th, at St. Thomas, Ont.. as Barnum's
1300.000 elephant, Jumbo, and the little
trick elephant, Tom Thumb, were being led
aloud the track by the keeper on the way
rrom tbe show grounds to the car to be load
ed, an Incoming freight train came upon
them unexpectedly and caught and killed
Jumbo and broke one of Tom Thumbs legs.
There was a side track on the north of the
main track which contained all of Barnum's
empty cars, and on either side tbere was an
embsnkment eight feet high. When the
keeper saw the train coming he tried to get
Jumbo down tbe south bank, but Jumbo
seeing no danger, refused. He then tried to
get him between tbe side track and main
line, but only partially succeeded, the loco,
motive striking Jumbo just as his foreleg
had left the trsek, striking him In the right
side and crowding blm against the cars on
the siding. The great beast was carried
with the engine about one hundred yards.
He was so tightly wedged tbat when be
could be carried no further, bis body crowd
ed the locomotive to the south side, throwing
it off the trsck. He lived thirty minutes.

her own decline and death were the In

the full hope of a trlnrephsnt immortality

by her husband and three children who are
