How many persons live only a fraction of
average human life because they neglect to
take tbe commonest precaution against
sickness. It Is disease in IU maturity that
kills, and maturity Implies growth. A slight
Indisposition Is usually slighted. They who
avail themselves of Hostetter's Stomach
Bitters known it to be efficacious In chronic
cases of disease, but the process of enre Is a
far easier one If lt is used in early stages of
dyspepsia, malarial disease, rheumatism,
constipation and liver derangement. Let
those who would avoid the peril which eren
the mof-t potent remedies cannot avert, steer
clear of the rock upon which so many con
stitutions sollt an under-appreciation of
the danger of neglect. ' will not do to
omit care and a reconrs of medicine when
health is affected. If debilitated, or ner

are in want of a remedy, use tbe Bitters.
THREE WEEHN lOHN KOITII.
At six o'clock a. m , of Mond.-iy i wnked
up at Pensacnla, bavin ptsse.i Mobile, at
one a. M. ami Pensacola Junction at three.
From this poiut our direction was neArly
due east.
Our route lay through a tame and on inter
esting country generally. Lumbeiing is
carried on extensively a'ong this whole
route; as indeed, in almost every portion
of the Southern States. We reached Lake
de Funlak for breakfast. Tni house Is a
resort of fashion, in the winter, aud
called Lake Fun;ak Hotel. It is in charge
of our host of Pensacola, Mr. nickey, or
the New Continental; and is an excellent
eating house, but bas the fault ot mriy of
the railroad houses on the Southern lines of
being too far Trom the car station. It looks -directly
out ou the lake, a Very beaut ilul ,
body of water.
This point ie regarded as a paradise for
sportsmen, whether in fishing or hunting, j
The woods abound iu abundance of game,
while the surface of the lake affords water '
fowl, and its dep'.hs the most delicate fish. :
At ten we reached Canyville on Cbatahatc
hee river; and a little after eleven we ;
reached the River Junction where the routes
fioiu Savannah aud Jacksonville meet.
The Chatahacthee is here a very large
ctream and is crossed by a rather indifferent
structure. Here the railroads from Savan
nah and Jacksonville form a junction. We
took the later on Tallahassee route and ar
rived at that city at one r. is.., where we
dined.
Tallahassee is the original territorial cspi
of Florida, as well as the seat ot justice of
Leon county, and retaius these distinc
tions. It is an Inland city and is not re.
roarakable for Its growth containing only
some 6,000 inhabitants. It is more dis
tinguished for the beauty of its public build
ings; the regularity ot its streets, and taste
of Its inhabitants, which bas glveu it the
appearance of a fluwer garden,
Ou the early atteruoon we crossed the
Sawanee river rendered immortal by the
plaintive negro melody of oue Stephen
Foster. It la a large strwaiu, aud where we
crossed it on its assage to the gulf bad lit
tle ot the poetical in its appearance. After
passing Live Ojk, Lake City aud Baldwin,
we crossed Jacksonville, a little afier dark.
We suou found ourselves in the Windsor
Hotel, and on giving the name of Dr. N. B.
Wolle, received the must cordial aileulion,
and were located iu ptensanl, ail join inn
apartments.
Not lung afterwards we partooit of a splen
did supper for which our long rule had given
us sucu an excellent appetite; and were al
ter wards regaled till tle hour of retiring by
excellent music, including all the uatioual
aus of our own and other countries. Be
fore midnight we retired to a uuch needed
rest, aud did r;ot aae next morning until

Prohibition In Iowa.
Tbe temperance people of Iowa are learn
ing that even a Constitutional amendment,
prohibiting the manufacture and sale of
intoxicating drh.ks, can be evaded. One of
tbe difficulties which temperance legislation
ba heretofore encountered in mauy States
arose from the fact that courts would declare
such legislation null and void on Constitu
tional grounds. The Iowa and Kansas peo
ple supposed that by engrafting tbeir pro
hibitory mandate in the Constitution of tbeir
respective States the last and most formida
ble obstacle to the scheme of making men
temperate by law had been overcome. j
The Iowa reformers are learning, howev
er, that it will be necessary to engraft the j
prohibitory principle itiW the constitution ,
of the average Iowa man before it will be j
generally effective. Engrafting it into the
State Constitution does trot aeem to do the i
work. While do liquor wsold openly as a j
beverage the increase of drug stores and pla- j
ces where llqaor is sold as a medicine. Is i
marvelous. Over four thousand persons.
have paid the internal revenue fee to thu j
federal Government stuce the law went in
I to effect, the latter taxing dealers just the
same whether they sell the article as a bev-
I erage or as medicine. I
Tbe peculiar feature of the Iowa form of i
j disease requiring alcoholic treatment is that -j
it does uol r quire the prescription of a
, physician to procure the remedy. Under a !
i decision of the Supreme Court of the State '
j every man has an inalienable right to be his i
! own doctor and to prescribe for himself if '
be wants to. It is scarcely necessary to add 1
that the number of Iowa men who think ,
j tbey know what ails them and what is good j
; for the disease better than any doctor is very ;
' large. The Iowa law requires dealers to j
j make monthly reports of their sales. A ;
' small dealer in Muscatine finds that it re
: quires fifty-one feet of paper to enumerate j
bis sales for July. It took 152 barrels of j
beer 89 gallons of whisky, 19 gallons of '
gin, 7 gallons of plain alcohol and two and
a half gallons of brandy to keep bis custom
ers la good health during that time.
Another notable feature of the Iowa form
of sickness is that it is chronic. Nobody is
ever cured. Whether the disease for which
the medicine is purchased be called cholera
or snake bite, the patient Delther dies nor
gets well. The same patients continue to
use the same prescription month after
month There are mauy indications that the
patients do not want to get well that, in ,
fact, they would rather suffer with tbi ir
disease than enjoy the roost lobust nea.tli j
iu the world. It is to be feared that while j
tbe law remains as it Is that Iowa will be
the most unhealthy State In the Union.

Water Ktalement.
In pursuance of a resolution adoped by
the Borough Council at their last regular
meeting, I herewith exhibit a statement of
the receipts and expenditures Incident to.
the Water Works for the last five years. It
will be observed that the expenditures for '
the year 18s2, exceeds tbat of any other year
given in the statement. The increase for j
that year was occasioned from the fact that 1
the water in certain parts of the pipes was ;
frozen In the winter of 1881 and 1882, cans- !
ing a large number of leakages, as well as :
destroying a quantitylof pipes, In addition to ;
the ordinary expense incident to the Water
Works. For th year 1834 I have noted an 1
item ot $207 paid for meters, which have !
been attached to distribution pipes of cer- j
tain consumers. These meters so far as
they have been usfd and tested by the J
borough have given entire satisfaction, i
Tbe decrease of receipts tor 1884, Is pro .
duced from tbe fact that the water rents j
had not been collected at tbe date of au
ditors' settlement from consumers' having!
meters attached, as they are not subject to j
payment in advance as other consumers' ,
are. i
