of tbe world. From viewl tte
pbeDomena of nature and considering j
the eeneral laws by which tbey are
regulated, no conclusion or even plaus- j
1 ible icference as to the precise period
when the world began to exist, can be j
reached. With respect to the period of i
time at which the Deity executed ms ;
several works of creation, mankind
have received no particular information
The sacred scriptures do not set forth
or fix the era of creation with anything
like precision. Critics disagree as to
the meaning of the word "day" in the
Mosaic account of the creation, some
understanding- it to be a perriod of
twenty-four hours, while others believe
it to mean an Indefinite length of time,
and the date of the completion of the
work varies in different versions of the
Bible. As inferred from the scriptures,
there is tbe greatest uncertainty as to
the age of tbe world. Kennedy, In his
Scripture Chronology, says that three
tundred different opinions, founded on
the Bible, may be collected as to tbe
length of time that elapsed between the
creation of the world and the birth of
our Saviour. Desvignoles, in bis
Chronology of Sacred History, states
that be has collected upwards of two
hundred calculations; of which the long
est makes tbe time from the creation to
the birth of Christ 6,954 years, and the
shortest 3.4S3 years. Even the date of

to the sheep a? most dogs are to their j
masters. Tbey are brought np with
flocks and have no other companion
ship. The puppies are taught to suckle
ewes, and are adopted by them.
A California sheep-raiser states that
a similar course is adopted in Germany,
with best results. In a communication
he says: "There, in general, the shep
herd stays with ti? sheep all the time,
day and night, and be has according to
the number of his flock, one or more
dogs, a kind I never saw before nor
have seen anywhere else. It resembles
in size the Newfoundland, but its hair
is bushy, long and partly curled. This
breed of dogs are never allowed, even
while puppies, to see anything but mem
bers of the held. It is astonishing how
these dogs and sheep fraternize with
each other. The sheep look in real or
imaginary danger more for the dogs
than for the shepherd, and always run
to and not from the dogs.
"If Americans wish to protect their
sheep from strange dogs, they must
adopt the German system, bring young i
shepherd dogs from their puppyhood
into the company of sheep, educate both j
to live, eat, and run together, aod ihey i

CHEAP rOKK.
I'oik, as a rule, costs too much, and
this is because it is too long in making.
It costs too uiucb. when it requires more
than one year's growth to m.Ke 3u0 or
3V) pounds. It is not bo much the
quantity of teed which makes up the
cost as the time in which this feed is
used. A p'K 2V dajs old may have
eaten l,.ri0 pounds of corn and male a
weight of S0 ponnds on it, which leaves
a eood trofi:, while one 4.Vj or -J das
old may consume the same quantity of
coru. but it will weigh not more than
200 pounds, which will leave a loss.
And this is because one winter is passed
through during which either no yain
in weight is inad or there is hu actual
loss in flesh. It will not pay now, if it
ever did, to throw away feed in the
mere support of life. Unless the food
is spent with the mo3t prcCt ttle results
money is lost, and as winter feeding
mostly results in loss of weight, or at
the b5t requires a large consumption
of food to supply the necessary loss of
beat, winter feeding cn not be proCt
able. There is never any wisdom in going
to extremes. The "happy mean" is al
ways the best. Forcing the feeding is
costly, and a larger quantity of food
crowded into an animal than can be
healthfully assimilated and turned iLto
flttSb is a unless was'e ji:?t as much as
tbe too slowly maturc-d anitu! is. In
rearing pigs, then, it is advisaLle to
h ve a system, and arrange the meth
ods of keeping them to suit it. For
instance, no pigs should bf fed over
winter bul tbe breeding stock. The
brood sows should have pips in March
or earlier, and these ':z reasonably
well fed shou'd weigh 2-V3 or .TOO pounds
by Decern ber. It is plain to every ex
pert p-irk grower that these sugzestions
imply a goixl deal more than ar
