"Traveler Iarlres His Trla t the
Hauntth Cave.
Nothing mors readily induces a contrast
between the Northern and tbe Southern
States than a comparison of the Falls of Ni
agara with the Mammoth Cave. They afe
both in their way, admittedly, the greatest
natural curiosities In tbe United States, or.
indeed. In tbe known world. And it is not
easy to say which Is the greater wonder, Ni
agara In its awful majesty or the Cave in Its
profound mysteries : The former In all its
sublime attributes Is palpable and taken in
at a glance ; the other In Its mysterious la
byrinths requiring weeks of exploration.
Yet Niagara is surrounded by a net work
of railroads the river spanned by suspen
sion bridges a thriving young city growing
up In Its Immediate neighborhood palatial
hotels and summer resorts abound in short
it Is the Mecca of the Northern States ; and
an adult don't like to admit that he has nev
er visited Niagara. Nay. were now the Em
pire State, in which this wonder is only par
tially located has Initiated the means for
making the falls with all their surroundings
and vicinity a public park free to all I
Behold the difference t The Mammoth
Cave is situate in Edmondson county. Ky.,
near its eastern boundary. The counties
into which the Southern States are divided,
ate much smaller than in the North. Ed
monson is a small county a corn and to
bacco county of some 9,000 inhabitants,
its county seat Brownsville, with some 250
Inhabitants, some 11 miles from the Cave.
Traveling by the Louisville and Nashville
Railroad, after crossing Green River a few
miles above, we arrived at "Cave City," at
about 3 p. di. The city consists of four
houses, one of which was our rendezvous.
From this point the fare is two dollars to
tbe cave and return ; the distance some nine
miles, passing through the counties of bar
len. Hart, and Edmondson. The land la
rolling and In its appearance resembled the
country in Western Pennsylvania ; as It did
also in tbe character and growth of Its tim
ber. Comparatively little of the land was
cultivated, and even that was wretchedly
farmed.
The road was the worst 1 ever travelled.
Where it was Lot steep and rocky it was a
swamp and the drivers took through the
open woods. At one point on our return
the teams were all abreast or nearly so, in
the woods, each trying to head the others
into the main road ; the passengers, ladles
and all cheering thir respective drivers. All
this too on Sunday morning.
A pleasant young Methodist clergyman
was of the party, and be could cot resist
the good natnred rivalry. We met him fre
quently afterwards and always found him
pleasant while his whole demeanor was al
ways in conformity to his sacred calling. He
took down in his table, the names and ad
ditions of the whole party.
The drive became wearying. Our African
John had destroyed three saplings on his
team and had cut a fourth. I sat In front
with him and sought information ; but be
was the most stupid negro I ever met. At
length I ikd him. "Are we ne near the
cave yet?" His answer was, "Wen we get
past the hill t'other side of tbe other one, 4e
boss will meet us and tote our plunder in."
Another reminder of our destination was
that at each log cabin we passed little bare
legged Africans would hall os with shells,
fioweis, etc., all of course from the Mam
moth Cave I
We reached the "House" about five p. ro.
and Boon after had a plain country supper.
There were 27 at table all candidates for
tSe Cave. The building is a queer, antique
looking structure : a temperance house,
there being no licenses granted In Edmond
son county. We had two waiters at our ta
ble one a youth of some twenty, (white,)
and not less than seven feet high the other
older but about the same altitude. I may
say here of the bouse, that though homely
it was clean and comfortable tbe landlord
polite and fairly intelligent, and tbe charges
not too high.
The descent luto the cave was, as it uni
formly Is. at seven o'clock and the agent oc
cupied his office preparing and Issuing tick
ets. He issued none for the "long route" as
that route is impracticable after the spring
rains. But there is a "short route" and la
"shorter," for which . tickets were respect
ively three and two dollars. We took the
latter as It corresponded with our ability to
travel, as well as our finances.
Then there was a flutter of preparation.
Our number was 27, one-third ladles. Many
of the parties, especially the ladies had a
prepared wardrobe for the Cave ; but the
agent demonstrated their uselessness ; and
recommend low hats and a cane for each
visitor.
Thus equipped and with some dozen
lamps we followed our guides to the mouth
of the cayern, some two hundred yards dis
tant But here 1 must take a long breath. 1 am
as reluctant to enter upon the details of our
visit, as I was to enter this fearful chasm on
this Saturday evening. So I shall defer the
exploration till my next paper.

from the saloon two men called to them,
saying : "Hold on, we are going to town,
too." The strangers walked along with the
yonng men, chatting pleasantly, until reach
ing tbe blnff. At that point one of the
strangers, without saving a word, struck one
of the young men a stunning blow, felling
Mm to the ground. The other young man
was then thrown down and every pocket in
bis clothing rifled. HI companion was
similarly searched, and the strangers then
made off. The only plunder of any valne
obtained by the robbers waa an open-faced
silver watch, worth about $23. The robbers
are supposed to have been tramps, and there
is no clue as to their identity. Johnstown
