There is a pro vision in its charter that it shall be exempt from taxation The authorities of the col lege resisted pauient and the matter was ta ken to the couuty court, where a decision in favoi of the college was rendered. Sheriff Luther thought there waa more noise than usual about the jail and on Tuesday concluded that he would make au examination of the prisoners' cells. Nothing was found wrong until he reached the cell of El wood Gordon, a colored prisoner, who was one of the batch ot seven that escaped soma time ago. and waa recaptured in Johnstown. He had dug lle through the wall about ten by twenty Inches with the exceptions of remov ing the outside stone, and 10 one more night would have pushed the stone out aod got in to the jail yard. He had done the work with a piec of Iron that he had by some means got hold of, and when lie found the cells were being examined and that bis work would be discovered, threw it out of the window. He had kept his work on the wall covered up in day time by hanging hie cloth log and bedding over it. Whether he would have succeeded In getting farther than the yard if he had got out is a matter for con jecture, as he would then have bad a twenty foot wall to have got through or over before being at liberty. He Is now enjoying him self in a cell with the blind door closed on him. where he will not have the opportunity of having anything contraband handed in. RK.TIKIMJ OFI'lf I A I. itKMF.MIttlllF.n. Ammonia in Bakixo PoviKits. Among the recnt discoveries in science and chemis try, none is more important than the uses to ' which common ammonia can be properly ; put as a leavening agent, and which indicate i that this familliar salt is hereafter to per- j form an active part in the preparation of cur ; daily food. j Cat bonate of ammonia is an exceedingly i volatile substance. Place a small portion of it upon a knife and hold over a fl-une, end ' it will almost immediately tie entirely deyel- I oped into a gas ami pass off into tlie air. ; The gas thus formed is a simple romposi- 1 tion of r.itrojen and hydrogen. No residue j is left from the ammonia. This gives it its j superiority as a leavening power over soda and cream of tat tar used alone, aid has In duced it use as a supplement to these arti- j cles. A small qua tiiy ammonia in the ; dough is effective in producing bread that will be ligh'.or, sweeter, and mwi whole- ; some than that risen by any other leavening agent. When it is acted upon by the heat , of baking the leavening gas that raises tlie ; dough is liberated. In this act it uses itself j up, as it were ; the ammonia is entirely dif- ' ' i fused, leaving no trr.ee or residuum what- 1 ever. The lioht, fliiffv, flaky appearance, i so desi; able in biscuits, etc, aud so sought afier by professional conks, is said to be ini- ! pirted to them only by the use of this agent. I The bakers and baking powder manufat: 1 toties producing the finest goods have been j quick to avail themselves of this useful dis- j cov-ry, an.l the handsomest and best bread and cake are now largely- risen by the acid : of ammonia, combined, of course, with other leavening material. ! Ammonia is otr of the best known pro ducts of the laboratory. If, as seems to be I jus! iy Claimed for it. the application of its ' properties to the purposes of conking results , in giving us lighter and moie wholesome bread, biscuits, and rake, it will prove a ; boon to dyspeptic humanity, and will speedily j force itself into gcueial use in the new field t which science has assigtKj.l it. -Scientific , A nierica n. 1 A Mn.i.ioNAiiiE's JlosET. The Hunting don Hcmi Weekly Xctrs says : Inquiries have come from Spain to an official of that gov ernment in this country in regard to the heirs of an A mericau who recently died in Madrid, leaving an estate valued nl gii.ono.On'J. and who was tormerly a resident ot this county. The name of the dead man was Oliver P. Mctiahan, and he was raised near Mt. Un ion by a man named John Hanawalt, of whom the citizens of the county have some recollection. From Mount Union he went to Lewistown, where he worked at and learned the trade of a jeweler. About fifty years ago he left this part of the State and went to Philadelphia, where he remained a short time. He then bought a sugar planta tion in Cuba and resided on that it-land. Through his business as a planter he became Interested in commerce between Spain and j Cuba and went to the former country and ac- ! quired an ownership in a line of steamers ! plying between the two, and subsequently i purchased an interest in lines running to other parts of the world. He left no will j nor decendauts or other relatives in Spain j or Cuba, ami his heirs are in America. He i is said to have a sister, Mrs James Cooper, I living iu Hollidaysdurg, aud another, Mrs. Edward Comfort, whose residence we have not learned. A Long Fast. The ShippensburR Xeirg eayt that some days ago Mr. Christian Hoo ver who resides a few miles west of Ship pensburg. called at the -Yetcs offiw, for in formation in regard to advertising an astray steer, but thinki ng tlie animal might turn up, faid he would let the matter rest for the present. Oue day last week he informed ns that the steer disappeared in October, on the day they were threshing, and af ter a lapso of forty-one days it as discov ered under the straw stack. The cattle in tlie barn-yard had eaten around and under the old stack and it turns out that the steer was in this place and was gradually covered up with the straw uutil unable to get out. Early in December a calf was missing but it was supposed that it got under the stack in a small opening between the old and new stacks. Ou the sixth of this month the calf watt brought out of this place and, creat'v to the surprwp of the parties, the steer was also found. The bottom of the stack was com- pused of oat straw which was damp. This with the tmali opening to admit the air kept the animal alive and iu fair conditon, and its first desire on regaining liberty was a draught of fresh water. Editor Freeman : In "Farm Notes," in I your last issue, I noticed a paragraph recom ! mending drilling id fall grain north and i B"ul" "H "le uesv means oi jinnee-nun it frnrn the action of the frost of winter. I once thought that the correct plan, but was told by a young man who had spnt several years of his life in New York, to drill east and west as tt.e only right way to secure a good crop, giving as the reason t!:ai the suu shines unobstructed between the drills which do not shade one another as when drilled north and south. II is t'.ieory appear ing plausible, I followed his advice, and the j result was that I had about the best wheat ; in the township the following harvest ; and ' I was surprised to notice that it withstood i the frosts and winds of winter much better than that on the old plan. Instead of blow- ing the tops off the ridges, the wind cavort j ed along the furrows, and they did not thaw out by day and freeze by night as it does j when put in north and south.
