H is not surprising that, with matches of
price, the Hint and steel and tindcrbox re

In tho sting of the bee, wasp, hornet,
etc., a minute drop of a transparent li-
quid may be observed on the sting, and j
calied ''bee poison'' (formic acid.) It ;
penetrates into the wound produced by ;
the sting, and causes the well-known ef- j
fects. It would, however, be a great ;
nmtake to assume that tho only object !
of this is to increase the effect "of the
sting, that is, that it seives only to in- '
jure. Ii has a far more important pur- j
poss. namely, to prevent fermentation J
and decay. The celebrated lx-e cultur-
or, IIolz. reports that in his long exper
ience with honey, that which camo j
from what are called rancorous swarms

smell wai siiarn. too. How can the
character of a swarm effect the smell
and taste of the honey they gather?
We know that bees, when they are dis
turbed, run out their stings, on the end
of which may be seen a tiny drop. This
little drop, as we have already said, is
bee poison, or formic acid. When th' ir
disturbances are at an cud they draw in
their slings again, but tho little drop of
liquid does not go baok agnin, hut it is
wiped olT on the comb, and sooner or la
tor gets mixed tip with tho honey. This
explains how honey from such excited
tieea must taste and Kinc-U sharper than
from the pfRceal! bets. Lxcitable cu t s
will run off this little drop of formic
acid mere frequently than other bt.es,
perhaps a larger drop is formed by ner
vous bees than by thOM that r.r non
nervous bees, and hence th' honev is
richer iu formic acid. This acid is
never absent in genuine hoi.e.v, but the
amount-differs. Thi-i contamination is
not only uniiijurious but very useful, in
fact necessary, for it keeps the lii.ney

formic acid that acioiiiiai.icte the
sting can be looked upon as the princi
ple agent in the cure, it would bj worth
while to try the experiment of nibbing
the spot with this acid or injecting it
nndei the skin, so as to avoid the some
what inconvenient method of applying
live bees.
Two hundred ypars ago formic acid
was ma le from the brown wood ants,
by triturating thc-m villi water and dis
tilling it. The acid liquid was used to
irilate the skin. Tho red h.m-ig of the
skin, o7 rising baths of pine h-rvps, is
al-o tine to tiie
action of the formic
acid. The auti-fermentative action of
formic acid l.a also long been recogniz
ed. As regards the irritative actioD of
stinging nettles and other similar vege
tables, it depends, as already stated, on
its formio acid. The point of the net
tles is hiittle A3 glass, and by the light
est touch penetrates the skin and then
breaks c2f, pour
ng cut its
acid and
causes a burning sensation.
In this little notice frequent mention
has been made, of formic action. In
conclusion it may be mentioned th.it it
gets its name from the ant (formica) he-
cause it was first found in them. If it
had been found first iu the bee or net
tie it would have received another name.
If an ant runs ovtr a piece of blue lit

Put a stick in an ant hill aDd he will

erican. Fork as Food. Tho question is
again raised as to whether pork is whole
some orotherwi.se, some people declaim
ing against it warmly, as an article of
food, Vc, though they offer no solid
reason for their opinion or belief. Xow,
so far asour information ami experience
go, we can regard such views as without
the shadow of a foundation. Fork-eaters,
who comprise about nine-tenths of
the population of the civilized world,
will scout at such nonsense, For all
persons of active habits pork is just as
wholesome as anything eise and more
sustaining. It is true that if too much
of it is aten at a time in other words,
if people make "hogs"' of themselves
thy will have to suffer for it as for an
evenness of almost any other food. To
discard pork would be discard one of the
main items going into our "vital statis
tics."' What would become of the army
and navy, of our merchant marine, of,
in a word, the great mass of our popula
tion, if pork were thrown overboard?
The idea is supremely absurd the abo
lition of this flesh as a prime article of
food would lo a just cause for a sumpt
uary revolution. Xo I go on, yo pork
eater", morg whom we number our
selves, with a craving stomach ; broil or
boil yonr hams, pickle jour sidrs, cab
bage and crout your chinos, some your
pigs' feet, and enjoy yourselves on the
