Notwithstanding this tale, it does not appear t hat theCory hantiaii instrument was very early used ip war, tor t ht re is no mention of it in the Trojan expedition or in anv of the campaigns of later Greeks and Romans. The learned are disposed to believe that it was brought into Europe as a military ins. i unieiit by th'1 returning Crusaders in the twelfth or thirteenth century. But it was clearly known long before in Africa and .E-rypt, and as a purely orchestral accompaniment in timts of peace it seems likely to have b-en known to the lit brews und.-r the term which in the Engli.-h Scripttnes is rendered by tabor. The recent revelations of a Philadel phia tobacconist, relative to the manu facture of cigarettes and their deleteri ous effect mx.n smokers, should not be without their influence -vitli those who use tobacco in that form. He says that the cigarettes in general use are manu factured in this country, principally in New York, and are charged with opi um and other adulterations. The more heavily they are drugged the more rap idly they sell. The trade in Havana and German cigarettes amounts to little or nothing, owing to the fact that they contain only pure tobacco. The taste is for the opiated article, because of the effect produced. Young men, and eren women and young lads, take to smoking the-se drugged cigarettes and acquire a habit from which they hnd it difficult to break away, and which, if persisted in, leads to ruined health ami an early grave. The opium or other narcotic matter with which thes? ciirare'ts r filled has a southing effect upon the! smoker, but their use is simp v t he com- i mission of suicide. The habit becomes j confirmed, and by and by the intelligent j iook oi the lace dies out, lines cluster around the eyes, and the eyes themselves assume a dull, heavy appearance. The smoker tteeomes listless, acts in a man ner which may lie termed mechanical, and eventually drops into a premature grave. The tobacco dealer who fur nishes the informatiot: says that, even the fumes of such cigarettes are iv.istn. ous, ami those who use them inflict harm 1 upon all who come within reach of their deadly vapor. It is some comfort to J know that cigarette smoking is on the ! decline, but still there are thousands who are ruining their health and paving their way to an early death bv continu ing their us. Young men should shun the practice or such indulgence, and parents should caution their smaller sons against the acquisition of a habit which can only end with a broken down constitution and an early dissolution. The tobacconist further s.ivs that the popular taste, is in favor of being stupe- urn -win cuorai or opium, and that dealers must either cater to this taste or I su'T'-r in business. Owing to this the i large proportion of cigars are flavored I wi!n valerian, and charged with liberal I doses of narcotics. Pipe tobacco has I a liberal addit ion of yellow ochre to give j it a light color, ami js fi ivoretl with winter green, while chewing tobacco is steeped in a poisonous preparation of logwood to produce the same etT.-r-t in j color. Tobacco in every form is either i adulterated or drugsred, and smokers and chewers of the weed will do well to pay heed to the icvelation made by one ! who understands the tricks of the trad ! and who docs not h-sitate to say that me use or auuiierateii tobacco produces worse f ffecls than does the drinking of The Way I'lati: Glass is Made. j To cast, roll, polish, and burnish plate i plass n quires machint ry of peculiar con- ! ! etructitui, and a 'plant" that is made : costly by reason of its complex na.ure ! j The pouring cf liquid glass from the! i furnace upon the cast iron plates, and ' the subsequent roiling are processes' com- ! paratively sicinie.
