now it becomes our painful duty to record
the death of that reallv good woman, whieh

rnght. Mrs. Cam 's maiden name was Cope
and her aee about 64 years. We are rot sure
as to the place of her birth, but know that
nearly if not her pntire life was spent in Blair

m1 Altoona. She was proverbial for her
Kindness of heart, geniality of disposition,
sincere devotion to hpr duties as a wife and
mot her, and earnest attention to thp obliga

husband, David Cnrrv, now a frail old man,
and five ebildre n, James E. Curry, foreman
in the finishing department of the P. R. R.
rr.acl-.ine shop, Mrs. Edward Coll, Mrs. Al

nr.d for several years past employed on the
Dalty Times, Philadelphia, of which city he
has been a resident for nearly half bis life
time. The funeral obsequies took place this
(Thursday) morning, and as the deceased
lady was widely known and greatlv beloved,
the number in attendance at the last sad.rites
was exceedingly large, the funeral cortege
being one of the longest ever witnessed in
that city. A solemn High Mass of requiem
for the repose of her soul was celebrated. "a
touching, eloquent sermon delivered, and ail
the other funereal ceremonies pA formed at
St. John's church, whither her remains were
taken before beine consigned to their last
earthly resting place in the Catholic cemete

our heartfelt prayer to the many which will
ascend to the Throne of Grace on behalf of
one whom we are sure sought to serve Cod
with a pure heart, train her children with an
eye single to their temporal and eternal wel

Brother Angelns succeeds Brother Law

for the pat twenty five or thirty years. The
office is one that, requires first class business
capacity, and we think we express the unan
imous opinion of those who have had busi
ness relations with Brother Ba wrence when
we say that he possessed that qualification in
an eminent degree. He acted promptly in
everything of a business character that be
was called upon to perform, and did it in such !
a way as to command the respect and confi- I
dence of all with whom he was brought Into I
worldly negotiations. His administration of j
his responsible trust must necessarily have
been of great benefit in a financial point of !

and agreeable nature, and in our frequent,
although not extensive, business relations I
with him we invariably found Brother I,aw- j

the broadest sense of the term and we shall 1
always entertain for him a sincere feeling of

A D.Anrxc, ITiohwat Rotirf.f;t. About 2
o'clock on last Monday afternoon, as Mr. ;

on a collecting tour for a sewing machine !
company In that place, was traveling in a i
one horse hnggy from New Germany to this j
place, and while about one mile from the
former place and five miles from the latter, j
three men suddenly appeared in the road out j
of the w.iods, otic of whom, with a revolver I
in his hand, seized the bridle of the horse. !
while another strnek him a blow on the head !
with a club and then pulled him out of the j
buggy. He was thrown down and after the
robbers had taken his pocket-book contain
ing forty-five dollars in bank notes, in the
struggle to obtain which Mr. Conrad was
veryroughH handled, receivinga severe kick
in the abdomen from one of the men. they
ran into the woods, possibly frightened by
Mr. Conrad's vigorous cries for assistance.
He has no idea who the three mep were, nor
were thev seen that day in the neighborhood.
One of the partv was much larger than his
two companions, while one of the latter had
side whiskers, and all three wore slouch bats.
Two men, we learn, were arretted in Altoona
fin Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of having
been concerned in the robbery. In appear
ance one of them resembles the larger man
and the other the smaller man with side
whiskers. Mr. Conrad, who was here on
Tuesday afternoon, went to Altoona when
he heard of their arrest, for the pnipose of
identifying them, and we learn this (Wed
nesday) morning that they were discharged,
Mr conrad faiiing to see any strong resem
blance on their part to his assailants.

at her father's residence, in that p!a"e. on
Wednesday of last week, in the twenty-third
year of her age. The health of the deceased
had been gradually declining since the death
of her brother Robert, about a year aero, but
nnti 1 recently strong hopes wore entertained
of her recovery. A short time since she vis
ited some friends in Connellsville, her parents
cherishing the hope that a change of climate
and scenery would be henefieial to her, but
about a week before her death she' was
brought hack to her home r.f terly prostrated,
and continued to grow weaker, "until at last
she calmly and peacefully passed away from
earth. During her long illness she displayed
a wonderful amount of patience and was re
signed to her fate. She was a bright and at
tractive young lady, gifted with more than
ordinary intelligence, end was an ornament
to the social circle In which she moved and
adorned with her many virtues. The parents
of the deceased have our heartfelt sympathy
in their great and irre?arah!e bereavement.
Miss Cox's funeral took place on Friday, ami
after a Requiem Mass had been celebrated,
her remains were interred in the Catholic
cemetery. In Bower Voder township. May
lier soul rest in peace.
On last Saturday night, while a young
man named John Keresy, of Altoona, was
out walkine with a young lady named Annie
Davis, so the story goes, thev entered the
grounds of the McCaulev residence, where
they were approached by a colored man who
said be was authorized to arrest, any tres
passers on the premises. They started to
leave the ground-, but he intercepted them
and caught hold of the girl and dragged her
into the woods. Keresy followed them,
whereupon the negro shot at him sevcal
times, one of thp shots taking effect in his
back. The girl, in a subsequent interview
with the police, said that the colored man.
after dragging her into the woods and threat
ening to kill her, succeeded in violating her

(.'r.E'snN, Aug. 7, ISsj.
Dear Hfvp.y Tn my last letter T said my
next would hail from Greenbriar White Sul
phur Sp rings, or whatevet other famous lo
cality my friend "Chet" might be pleased to
retire for the summer, but "Chet" has dis
pleased me, and I cannot reconcile myself
with the thought of associating with sueb a
heartless excellency as he has proved him
self to be. His disapproval of our "wisdom
chunks" perfected scheme of taking care of
the people's money was infamous. After
our Honorable (?) Senators and Congress
men had devoted a whole session to perfect
ing a scheme fnr filling their exchequers, for
"Chet" to attempt to dash their fond expec
tations to earth was infamous. His impu
dence in intimating that honorable (?) na
tional legislators had no right to put the pulv
lie mnnev to private use. cannot be compla
cently submitted to. I am done with "Chef,"
as he has disgusted me. and will not spend
the summer in his society.
It rejoices my heart to hear the American
eagle crowing in honor of the exploits of our
navy. Tne hearts of the people of the whole
country should breathe easier at the infor
mation that our able bodied naval squadron
in the Chinese waters is bravely .sustaining
the American reputation. It seems as if
this happy nation will be able to cast eternal
defiance in the teeth of the whole world. It
is confidently reported that the "boiled lob
ster" is willing to run the risk of going to
sea in one of his own monitors.
The average Congressman devotes the
whole time of each session in perfecting
schemes of robbery, and it is wonderful
what ability the average Congressman has in
shutting up the eyes of his confiding constit
uents. They indignantly rejeet corrupt
amepdments attached to a measure by the
one house and sending it to committee of
conference who will be sure to'dicker and
final I j fix the bill up so that its objectionable
features arb all ietalned. The average Con
gressman can resort to a hundred tricks to
secure the success of coveted jobs, and pre
serve, the semblance of public irtue in the
eves of a worthy people to whom they owe
their elevation. The ability of the average
Congressman to shut up the eyes of his con
fiding constituents Is sublime. Shameless
subterfuges have become so common that
members of both houses openly boast of
their success in deceiving their constituents.
Up until the last few days I was simple
enough to believe that nothing could occur
in this world to astonish me, but lam con
strained to honestly acknowledge that an
ever loyal citizen of our glorious Union, an
Oliioan, has done something to disabuse my
mind of its false impression. He has more
than astonished me, having absolutely as
tounded me. He committed an act whi b I
considered Impossible for any "trooly loil"
A meriean citizen to be guilty of committing,
lie positively, yea, persistently, refuses to
receive a pension, and demands that his
name bn stricken from the pension roll.
This is fearful. The great fear is, that this
mnn having recovered from his disability
and refusing longer to be a government pau
per, may induce the many other thousands
of government paupers who have recovered
from the'r disabilities to follow bis example
by refusing to draw their pension and order
their names to be dropped from the pension
roll. It issmceiely to be hoped that theOhio
an's claim for glory will not lie followed by
any other "ever loyal" citizen of any other
State of this g'orious Union. It would be a
sad day for the "wisdom chunks' of the
"eave of winds" and the ' fog hanks," if ail
the "ever loyal" who have recovered from
their disabilities should refuse to be anv lon
ger government paupers. G. N. S.
Cahhot.i.tow-n, Aug. 2, ISSj.
Mr Deaii Frkf.max I see an article in
the Altoona Sum'av Morning of July 30th,
headed ' a bold operation," and which was
clipped from the Johnstown Tribune of July
2ttb It speaks of an operation performed
by Drs. Logan and McCoy upon a man
named Grady, of Minersville. The cist of
the article is a loud advertisement for the
aforesaid doctors at the disparagement, of
ot her physicians, and especially of Professor
Agnew, of the University of Pennsylvania.
That the artiele was published at the insti
gation of Logan and McCoy I cannot believe ;
yet their tacit approval of such an article
gives them a shade of the odium w hich halos
quacks. Were the matter set forth in the ar
ticle even true, it would lie unprofessional
on the part of said gentlemen to permit it to
come before the public. But it is not true
The disease which afflicted Grady, judging
from the description given in the article,
must have been either a psoas or a iliac ab
scess. While there is sufficient similarity
between an abscess pointing below Poupart's
Ligament an an aneurism of the upper por
tion of the femoral attery to confound those,
unacquainted with surgery, such an error
would not likely be committed by a skillful
surgeon. And if the diagnosis in the case in
question was so obscure as to be beyor.d I lie
discovery of Professor Agnew, it was surely
rash on the part of Logan end McCoy to op
erate. Because it happi-rn-d to be an abscess.
Logan and McCoy receive praise. Had it
been an aneurism, and had the patient died
nnder the knife, nothing would probably
ever have been suid of the matter.
I do not believe, however, that Profe.-sor
Agncw'p 'ia"Posis was correct iy set foithin
the article. Had he been of theopinion that
the tumor was an aneurism, be would likely
have operated, either by compression or liga
tion. It is more probable that he considered
It a psoas abscess, and wisely put his patient
on a preliminary treatment for operation.
In hospitals, patients are not always told all
the particulars about their disease.'nor is the
pian of treatment always laid down to them
in detail. They often catch up words drop,
ped by the doctors, out of which thev make a
diagnosis of their own, and then ascribe it to
the doctors. Whether Gradv did this I do
not kno, but if he did not, the Johnstown
Trihune has evidently been disgracefully
misrepresenting things.
As regards the "cranky" reference made
in the latter part of the article to President
Garfield's physicians, it is too plainly the
bombastic nonser.se of a newspaper quack
to need comment.
There are other inconsistencies in the arti
cle which I might point nut, but 1 will con
tent myself hy merely n questing the writer
of the article to let us know when Grady,
who he said would be out in a few d.-.ys, will
have recovered.

Invitation.
Strangers arc invited to v'i5;t
our store, when In Philadel
phia, to leave packages there,
and to make a convenience
of it generally. It is a handy
place, right by the new City
Hall, at the very center of the
city. It answers our purpose
to welcome you, and to pro
vide for such of your wants
as we can.
The store is about twice
as large as it was two or
three years ago; made so by
tuulcr ground and
building overhead, .nd by ex
tension on Chestnut street.
Parts of the store are about
as comfortable as any place
can be; and cne of the most
comfortable parts is now be
ing got ready for the rest and
.-: ;resHment of strangers.
One of the plcasnr.t things
about tiie store always has
been the fact that you can
walk all over it, cither alone
cr with a guide, without ever
being aske d to buy a thing.
We kno .v very well that most
of you come to us for a good
share of your supplies; why
should we spoil your visit by
intruding goods upon your
attention, when you come to
see the place ?
But perhaps you are not
coming to Philadelphia just
now. Very well; take a cool
er time. It's cool enough in
the store, when you get here.
You can write for any goods
that you may happen to
want; and get them, proba
bly, just as well as if you
were on the spot. Any how,
you know, you can return
whatever you get that you
don't like.
Wc sell more sorts of
tilings than we can put into
an advertisement So, what
ever you want, suppose you
drop us a line. We'll help
you if we can.
