CURIOUS PATENTS.
Sonn i-ivoM?!x:itins' ncrson lias fur
nished tlie New Vork Tinus with a bnef
list Of patents on small things such as
any man or boy might have thought of,
but didn't, and which in many instances
have proved mines of wraith to the dis
coverer. For, inasmuch a.s po many
mind might have hit upon these things,
they ought properly to be called discover
ies instead of inventions, and are the
outcome of luck or chance, or whatever
one may choose to call that arrange
ment of circumstances which h not the
result of much forethought or logical
process, The steam engine, the steam
ship, the locomotive, the telegraph, the
reaping-machine, the power-loom, the
sewing imn-hine, the telephone, the cotton-gin,
the teleseoiw and scores of sim
ilar machines ami instruments are truly
inventions, lhey reijuire a logical ana
philosophical combination of law and
principles. Hut there are hundreds of
smaller things, chiefly ietty convenien
ces and contrivances for domestic use,
or amusing or entertaining toys, which
are more in the nature of discoveries.
These last have been only found the
others were found out.
Among these tritles is the favorite
toy the "return ball'' a wooden ball
with an elastric string attached, selling
for the sum of ten cents each, but yield
ing to its patentee an income equal to

The rubber tip on the end of led pencils
affords the owner of the royalty an inde
pendent fortune. The inventor of the
fruniined newspaper wrapper is also a
rich man. The ginilet-ioiuted screw has
evolved more wealth than most silver
mines, and the man w ho first thought of
putting copper-tips to children's shoes is
as well off as if his father had left him
?2.000,XtO in United States bonds. Al
though roller skates are not so much
used in countries where, ice is abundant,
in South America, especially in Brazil,
they are very highly esteemed and have
