Some two or three years ago Mr. Martin .
Ward, of this place, purchased seven acres
of land belonging to the estate of Peter L.
Linton, deceased, and lying a short distance ;
west of Fhcnsburg. for which he paid the
comparatively insignificant sum of ninety
dollars. This land he retained Until Tues
day of this week, meantime realizing on his
investment not less than fifiv percent, per
annum by the cultivation of the land, when
he sold it to County Treasurer Kennedy for
four hundred dollars, one-fourth in hand
and the balance in six months. Not a had

Our old-time Democratic friend Joseph
Story, former'v of East Conemaugh, hut of
late years a resident of Aitoona, where tie is
engaged in the livery business, mourns the
loss of a black mare which he recently got m
a trade with a horse dealer from Indiana
borough, and which on Sunday last was seen
going bv the Buekhorn tavern, on the east
side of the mountain, evidently intent on re
turning to her old home. Said mare is a
pacer and is afflicted with distemper. If
anybody knows anything of her whereabouts
Mr. Story will not only be glad to hear their
stnrv. but will reward them for their trouble.
We are reliably informed that an episode
occnired in one of our public sehno's the oth
er dav which to say the least Is unusual. A
scholar who was pionouwced unruly by the
teacher was cal'ed up to be reprimanded,
when, without warning, the recalcitrant
youth, who is a well-grown hoy, struck the
' teacher, who is a lady, in the face. If all
this be so, then some condign punishment
I would seem to he demanded for the young
: scamp, who ongM to be taught at home that
! measure of obedience which bv all the re
: quirements of society is demanded elsewhere.
A lesson of the sort would run all round the
i neighborhood.
j" Our new Burgess, Mr. C. T. Roberts, had

! glass in one of the show windows at .Mr. Ed.

Mr. Tom L. MeNaniara, or more proper

Still another aspirant for Sheiiff on the

their intention to take the chances for that 1
office and abide by the result of the coming
primary election. The candidate in this in- ;

nine o'clock on said morning the coal train
on which lie was employed was being shifted,
and Stifller. standing on the bumper of a
car. pulled the pin and allowed a portion of
the train to run in on the siding. After the
train had parted he from some cause not ac

the car upon which lie was standing. The
forward truck of the car pased over him
without the wheels injuring hini, except on
the right hand, but the brake-ri jring struck
him on the face, head and sides, inflicting in
juries which caused his death in about one
hour. He was :ii years old .ud lived in Dun

said she believed he was her assailant. The
three little eirls. however, who fn r.i p. short

HOCR OF NIGHT.
One of the boldest pieces of villainy that
has been attempted in this county for many
a day was perpetrated in Carroll township
on Friday night of last week. We have not
been able to glean the full particulars in re
gard to the matter, but from what we have
l"arned it appears that a couple of edroit
thieves drove to the barn of Mr. Jacob Zern.
an old and well known fanner residing in
the township shove named, between the
hours of ten and eleven o'clock on the right
indicated, and very coolly and deliberate'v
Proceeded to load their wagon with such
produce as f'cy could find lying around loose.
There js no telling just h vv much giain thev
would have got away with had not a son of
Mr. Zern. who was somewhat belated in get
ting home, appeared upon the scone about
the time the two check y scamps had succeed
ed in stowi'ig some fifty bushels of oats and
from five to (en bushe's of wheat in their
wagon. Of conic the unloosed for appear
ance of young Zern at that particular mo
ment greatly dis oncerted the i-'ans of the
hold robbers, and fearing that speedy detec
tion would overtake them, it is sa'd that one
of the party suggested the propriety of dis
posing of the nn. Aelcoine intruder by'shoot
ing l.im on the spot. Be that as it may,
nothing of the J,ind was attempted, and as
soon as Mr. Zern entered the house, where
he arouseri his father ami the other inmates
as speedily as possible, the midnight ma
rauders got in their wagon anil drove oft" at a
rapid rate in the direction of Carroiifown,
Mr. Zern and one or two of his sons mean
time mounting th-dr horses without any un
necessary delay and starting in hot haste
attei the thieves. Tiie latter, however, very
cunningly circumvented their pursuers by
tearing down a porlicn of the fence anil
driving in'o r fieid by the roadside, where
they remained as quiet .as mice until the par
ty in pursuit, who were unable to see them
owing to the darkne-s of the night, had rid
den by and proceeded a considerable distance
beyond their place of concealment, when
they again ventuied into the road and turn
ing their horse's head in an opposite direc
tion drove toward Xicktovvn, in Birr town
ship, where thev were finally overhauled an
hour or two after by Mr. Zern and In ; party,
who were not long in discovering the trick
the wily rascals had played upon them, and
of course retraced their steps and continued
the pursuit wit li all possible haste. The re
sult was, as already stated, that the two
thieves were overhauled at Nicktovvn, but as
the overhauling didn't stop or otherwise dis
commode them in ti e least, we legiet to say
that Mr. Zern and his sons had nothing for
tin ir long ride nut the healthful ami invigo
rating exercise of which such expeditions are
always productive. True it is that a demand
was made upon the fleeing fugitives to stop
and delivei up the stolen property, but as
those who made it, don't seem to have ha 1
the necessary weapons to back up '.heir brave
words, and as it is possible that the party of
the second prirt were better prepared for sin;.)
an emergency, or at least that Mr. Zetn and
his sons were .afraid that they had shooting
irons with tlietii, it is not to be wondered :it
that the demand mad" was treated witli si
lent contempt hy those to whom it was ad
dressed. For the same reason, we presume
that is, icar of bodily harm the ovm-is of
the stolen property doubtless refrained from
mailing any effort to arouse the people of
Nicktovvn, who being asleep were of course
entirely unconscious of what was transpiring
at the time in their midst, and the result was
that the two daring thieves drove on with
their booty in the direction of Indiana coun
ty, while Sir. Zern and his two sons returned
home sadih-r and sh-epier it not wiser and
wealthier men than when .they started on
their fruitless expedition.
P. S. Sln -e the above was in type we learn
that Mr. Zern was the only one who kept
track of the thieves in their various wander
ings and successful effort to l, -t away with
their booty, and t hat tie a tempted to w;ki n
up 'Squire Lei!), or" Nicktovvn, and would
have succeeded in doing so and perhaps, re
covered his proj-eily I. i I he peis:Me ,i little
longerin thumii:ie atul yeliingat the 'Squire's
door. As it is, he is s.,id to have a pn-tty
good idea as to who the thi'-ves are, ro d il so
it is to be hoped Hint he will have no tioubli;
in bringing t hem injustice.
