are lar:riiiiti tt ni;ike a pathological
estimate of "wf.rry" as a faitlor iti the
ytrtxluctioii of JoA'iirirht acute disease,
an.l (f thesrf .slow, fhr'aiiic disorders of
function which chieily wear jut the hu
man frame. Dr. I. M. Granville has a
japer on the subject in the 1'opnlnr
Science Monthly, and indeed, the matter
is worth much moro careful attention
and closer analysis in its psychological
ami physiological aspects than the doc
tors have so far given it. The imme
morial old proverb, "Care killed a cat"
which Is reputed to have nine lives), is
true as Gospel, and its common recogni
tion shows that homely wits have Ion?
loncf since estimated worry at its proper
value. The analogies of language bear
the proverb out, too, for "worry' and
' weary'' have the same identiccl root.
"Worry, as the physicians should never
forget, while it is most obviously and
often theeff .ct of physical disorders, can
Ite and is neatly as often their cause.
The state of mind and body in which one
is liable to be easily worried, vexed and
out of temper, is very commonly pre
ceded by actual vexations, worries, har
ra.ssments, cares, and solicitudes, which
end by breaking down the nervous sys
tem to such a degree as to make worry
their constant, chronic condition. If
medical science cau ever attain such a
degree of perfection as to enable us to
"take arms against a sea of troubles"
and not end ihem by committing (for
that is impossible with an endless.'Ilow
irtg in), but to steel ourselves against,
them po as to become measurably in
dili'erent to the assault, it will have
achieved half of the great object of med
icine as a science the prevention of dis
ease. Religion and philosophy are both
unequal to cope with worry let the jr.
D.'j. now try their hands at it. Laai
Tivire Arntiican.
Ik your coal lite is low, throw on a
