iu.fr ui; forgotten, any nvre than a phy- j
sieian who lias once hanied to detect j
the lieiii.iiTlrtg'c puis.; could lorget its
peculiar thrill imparted to his educated
flutter.
J Living learned to roeognizd the ini
tial lever by il l peculiar pulse, ho next I
proceeds to vaccinate. It this is done j
ten or twelve hours after inception of i
the initial fever the patient will have j
slight indisposition, without a, .-t;u of I
eruption, and as positive exemption I
from a recurrence of the disease as if it j
had had it m the most malignant form. I
Tha patient is vaccinated early afterthe j
initial fever t'eift in, he may then be al- j
lowed to go where he pleased without j
fear of giving the disease toothers. Tlie j
ingrafting of the vaccine matter upon
the primary v:rio'.oi3 fever seems to
have the power to destroy its ability of i
it-production or propagation entirely. '
Another peculiarity is this: If an un-
protected patient is vaccinated before
the inception of ihe initial fever, and .
the vaccine take-, lutih.es not prevent, -oniy
motiiii'.-s the di.i.-a.se, th.; result will :
be varioloid in its appearance of charae- ,
teristies. Ii.it if vaccinated after the
c-in:ineiic( meiit of the initial fever, and '
too late to ri t U - ly prevent an eruption,
the eruption will resemble in size and
other characteristics the smallpox erup- j
tion, it matters not whet her there is one ;
or a hundred piir.p'.cs. There is as great
a difference in the appeaiance of the :
varioloid eruption and the smallpox j
eruption as there is between gray and
yellow.
Dr. I'ayne divides small-pox into con- j
Uncut, senii-co:iiluenl, discrete, modi- j
tied and manipulated, the latter being a i
term of his own invention. In ls:J7
smallpox broke out in his neighborhood, j
in Virginia, and was of the variety i
known as vii i'li iti.rn, and when not
niodiiied by s ene benign iniluence was ;
invariably continent. Those in and j
around Manassas were of the same yar- !
iet. Ueing called to attend a colored!
chambermaid who had but recently !
aborted, and who was in a room fiver 1
the kitchen of a large hotel near his j
own dwelling, he recognized in her the j
pulse peculiar to smallpox, and the next j
day the eruption appeared. In regard ,
to isolation he says: lT saw it would i
never do to remove this woman, and I ;
determined to the case and abide '
the consi ipinices, be they what Lhfy j
might. If I have her removed, I said,
the poor woman must die, and the pre- 1
vailing wii.ds will blow the virus for j
miles down the valley below, and the ;
di.--e.ise will spread beyond control. Jiut
by isolating the ease I have every conli- '
