Fruit GrowlDf Among the Anclenti.
We can only gather here and there
among ancient classical writers allusions
to horticulture. Chiefest of these wo
find among the Greeks, and verj fasci
nating and beautiful they are. In the
islands ot the Mediterranean, where the
climate it senv-tropical, seems to have
been gathered the various fruits of all
climes, propagated with extreme care.
The garden of Alcir.ous, mentioned by
Homer, contained 4 acres. The old man
probably believed in the motto of "Four
Acres Enough." He and his people
firmly believed in the gospel of the god
dess Ceres as an actual revelation, and
they venerated her as "Revered Ceres,
bearer of seasons, giver of glorious
things." They looked upon the fruits
of the earth as sacred things, to be
treasured and caressed on account of the
giver. Homer lived in the days of Sol
omon, and his poems were considered as
sacred as those of the great temple buil
der. A vein of faith in the truth of the
writings of the grand old father of all
poetry has run through human kind ever
since, and Dr. Schliemann. the great
German explorer, has proved his faith
bv startiinsr revelations. i-ollovine is
a literal translation of his description of
the fruit garden of Alcinons alluded to :
"Hut without the hall there is a large
garden near the gates of Four Acres ;
but around it a hedge was extended on
both sides. And there tall flourahing
trees grew, pears, and pomegranates,
and apple trees producing beautiful
fruit, sweet Jigs, nourishing olives, and
peaches that delighted the heart. Of
these the fruit never dies, nor does it fail
in winter or summer, lasting through
out the whole year ; but the west wind
erer blowing makes some bud forih
and ripen others. Tear grows old after
pear, apple afterapple, urape after grape,
tiff after fig, and peach after peach.
There a fruit vineyard was planted ;
one part of the ground exposed to the
sun in a wide place in diied by the sun,
and some grapes they are gathering, and
others they are treading, and further on
are unripe grapes, having thrown oft the
flower, and others are slightly changing
color. And there are all kinds ot beds
of flowers laid out in order to the furth
est part of the ground flourishing
throughout the whole year, and in it
are two fountains, etc."
The picture is as strange to us as it is
delightful. Our common fruits are
here spoken of as having the character
istics of the orange family, blossoming
and bearing fruit the whole year. v ill
the orange and the lemon ever be so
transformed in our Northern climate
that will bear in the summer only ?
The apple is classed with the fig and the
pomegranate, and the pear with the
olive and the peach. This was long be
foret he conquest of Persia, from which
the peach is said to have originattd.
The habits of the grape are also pecu
liar and past belief. What a lively time
of it the fruit-grower would have pick
ing fruit ail the year long V
Haw ley, in his rendition of the Hin
doo writer Yakim Door, gives us the fol
lowing :
"The great lying ships of Osnoor
brought us peaches and apples." Os
noor was a wealthy Japanese merchant.
We infr-r that these abounded in Japan,
and that some method wa known (100
years 15. C. ) of preserving t lie fruit in
tr.iusit to a tropical country a thing
that would puzzle us these latter days,
with all our stoani and refrigerators.
We may say, without a very great stretch
of the po-ss'ibilites, that Solomon eat his
Winesapsand Iialdwins,hiBarllettsand !
"Bunnies," his Crawfords and Old Max
ims, his Delawares and Tokays for des
ert, and washed it down with Golden
seal and dry Catawba. No mention is
made of strawlierrios. The uxorious old
; sinner missed his best holt if he knew
nothing of strawberries and cream. If
i his "biack but comelv" ma.sk had got
hiir up a strawberry short cake when he ;
came into her bower where the "pom
egranates flourished," sho would not
have foiiDd him amiss in his at tentions,
notwithstanding his other multitude of
fair charmers.

TURKISH CARPETS.
One of the most inportant industries
of the Ottoman empire, and certainly
the chief industry of Asia Minor, always
excepting agriculture, is the making tt
carpets. Some of these factories are
now furnished with looms quite in the
European manner, but it is not in such
factories that these famous fabrics are
chiefly produced ; the peasants in their
mud-houses and the r.omad Yuruks in
their tents all contribute to the many
kinds that arc made. The annual value
of thecarpets of Anavolia approach f "00,
(lOO ; and of these but a small number
remain in Turkey when compared with
those distributed over Lurope and Amer
ica, where the demand is constantly in
creasing. About three-fourths of the
carpets come to Kngland (but not all
for home consumption), and about one
sixth goes to France. Those large ex
ports keep the prices at a fair level, and
in the best shops of London and I'aiis
all kinds of Fastern carpets can be got
for ready money more cheaply than the
casual traveler can buy them on the
spot. This applies to the finest o'd car-1
pets as well as tothe new ones : for even
with a good and trusty dragoman one
may have to lose the best part of a day
haggling for half a dozen velvety mel
lowed Daghebtans w ith a carpet "dealer
of Sjmnia, Cairo or Alexandria, and
after all ba victimized to some extent.
Ooshak, a large village .of artisans
about six days' journey due east from
Smyrna, is the headquarters of the man
ufacture of the carpets known to us for
generations a3 "Turkey carpets." and
in France as "tapis de Smyrna." Tho
patterns are Turkish, cr, rather, arabes
que. At, Ooshak there are at full work
hundreds of the looms called lesyak,
employing abont 3.000 women, and
turning out about S5.0G0 square yards of
carpets of all sizes and qnalitiesaunually.
A carpet of between seven and eight
yards in length will employ eight wom
en at once, working side by side. Their
wages are about tight piasters a week,
which, it is calculated, comes to about
one shilling and nine pence for each
yard of carpet woven. The wood used
comes from the villages round about,
and it is bought for about a half-penny
a pound in its uncleaned state. When
washed and bleached it loses at least
one-third of its weight. The foundation
of the carpet is made of an inferior wool.
anrl the whole material of the fabric
may cost about two shillings sixpence a
yard. This does not include the dyeing,
which is managed by the men, and
forms the chief item of cost. The col
ors that Lave so long satisfied our west
ern eyes are produced for the most part
with madder, cochineal pnd indig.
Madder root, or alizard, gives the fine
old "Turkey red," aud is largely grown
in Asia Minor ; the best roots cost from
four to five cents a pound. Cochineal
is imported from Kngland and France,
and, being an expensive dye, consider
ably raises the price of the carpets. It
was not used before the year l-oo' ; an- i
terior to that date madder alone was j
employed for reds, and this fact gives an
epoch for the carpet-fnncier. The indi- i
co is bi ought from Kngland or from In- i
dia. Yellows are got l ion: the seed of I
Khainnus alaTernus, which is cultivated j
largely in the eastern parts of Kararr.an- !
ia and is getting dearer every day ; it i
now costs one shilling fourpence a !
pound. Other dyes, which are import- i
ed from Europe, are used in small quan-
tities to obtain the more tender tints,
and tone down to the general effect. '
The "velvet" carpets which have attain- '
ed such a vogue were not made at Ooshak '
till the vear 18t'.0. St. Jt)wS HztiU. I

Salt fok the Throat. In these
davs when ilisvuses of the throat are so
universally prevalent, and in so uiany j
cases fatal, vre feel it our duty to say a
word in behalf of a most eilectual, 11
not positive, cure for nore throat.
For years past, inJee l we may say
durinjr the whole of a life of more than
foi'y years, we have beeu sulijected to
sore thivat, and mure particularly to a
dry hacking cou.ah which is not only
distressing to ourselves, but to our
friends and those with whom we are
Pro ltiht into business contact.
Last fall we were induced to try what
virture there was in common salt. We
commenced by using it three times a day,
morning, noon and nitrht. We dissolved
a larxe tablespoon 1'u! of pure table salt
ia about a half small tumbler full of
water. With this we gargled the throat
most thoroughly just Ijeforc meal time.
The result has been that during the en
tire winter we were not only free from
conjrhs and colds, but the dry hacking
connh has entirely disappeared.
Weatlributw thtse satisfactory results
solely to the use of the salt garble, and
most cordially recommend atrial of it
to those who are subject to diseases of
the throat.
Many persons who have never tried
the salt gargle have the impression that
it is unpleasant. Such is not the case.
On the contrary, it is pleasant, and after
a few days use, no person who loves a
nice, clean mouth and a first-rate sharp
ener of the appetite will abandon it.

Health Hints. Flaxseed tea, which
is good for cough and sore throat, is
made as follows : Put two tablespoonfuls
whole flaxseed in a pint of boiling wat
er, and boil fifteen minutes. Cut up one
lemon and put in a pitcher, with two
tablespoonfuls of sugar. Strain the tea
boiling hot through a wire strainer into
the pitcher and stir together.
Medical men claim that a pound and
! a quarter of oat meal will supply as much
nitrogen and almost as much fat to the
J bo ly as one pound of uncooked meat of
! ordinary quality. .A man gets three
I limes as much nourishment at the same
; cost in oatmeal as he does in meats,
j One pound and a half of Indian meal Is
l equal to one pound of uncooked meat in
j nitrogen, and surpasses it in fat.
I One who has tried it communicates
1 the following about curing sore throats :
; Let each one of your readers buy at any
drug store one ounce of camphorated
! oil, and five cents' worth of chloiate of
i potash. "When any sorebess appears in
j the throat, put the potash in a half tum
j tiler full of water, and with it gargle the
j throat thoroughly; then rub the neck
' thorough lo with the camphorated oil at
I night before going to led, and also pin
: around the throat a strip of woolen flan
: nel. This is a simple, cheap and sure
remedy.

FATTENING AN OLD tOW IN MILK.
Fattening an old cow is generally a
slow and sometimes an unprofitable pro
cess, unless she gives milk enough mean- !
I while to pay for the extra feed. A writ- !
I er ill the Xati'inal Live S'y !; Journal,
j who Las made pood beef of cows at six- :
I teen to iiineteen years of age, causing
them to weigh 100 to J") pounds more j
I than at any period during their younger j
I life, thus de-scribes his process, which
he has, without exception, found satis- ;
factory, the animal always a little more
than paying at the pail for all feed cou- j
sumed, and "sometimes a good deal
more'' : j
"If an oid coiv is quite thin and skin
ny, as she is likely to be, she should not
be plied strongly with corn-meal on the j
start. This is apt to make hr feverish
and to induce a slate opposed to thrifty
fattening; besides, this feverish state
will render her milk gargetv. Give her .
slightly loosening and cooling food at '
first, such as pumpkins, potatoes, sweet- I
apples, buccuient rowen grass, one or j
two pounds of oil-meal, cheap molasses 1
aud clovi r hay, or, better, green clover ; !
and with any of these may be given on ;
the start one or two quarts of cornmeal I
tr day. The food must ba gradually
increased. A pint lo three pints of '
cheap molasses, diluted with three parts j
of water, and ruixed w ith one-half bush- j
el of cut clover hay, will keep the stomach 1
and bowels in excellent condition when !
beginning the cornmeal. And all these I
foods will make prim milk. Another ;
food that wiil be found successful, and J
in many places cheap, is one bushel of j
flaxseed ground with fifteen biuhels of j
corn. This flaxseed will render the
cornmeal just laxative enough foi health
and the flaxseed is worth, as a food, all
it usually costs. Cottonseed meal may
also be fed to advantage up to three
pounds ier day. Linseed meal, made
by the new process, is excellent to feed
with cornmeal, as it has a large propor
tion of nitrogen and thus balances the
cornmeal ; but two pounds per d;iy is
sufficient of this. The principal grain
food may properly be cornmeal, which
is usually cheaper for fattening than
other grain. l?ran and cornmeal go
well together for feeding an old cow,
and after the cow gets accustomed to
the use of grain you may feed her six
quarts of bran and six quarts of corn
meal in three feeds per day. It is al
ways better to begin feeding heron pas
ture, beginning the use of grain lightly,
as mentioned, and increasing, little by
little, up to her capacity. It the cow be
young that vou desire to get rid cf be
cause she is too small a mi.ker, you may

A whiter in the lTouscl-crper furnish
es these hints: "There are many nice !
ways of cooking potatoes, and our fa- j
vorite way is frying them. Sliie raw ;
and put sweet lard enough in your spid- j
er to well cover the lottom after it is i
melted ; put in the sliced potatoes ; salt, j
pepner and cover tight ; let them cook t
until well browned on the bottom before j
turning. Tne knack is to have laid '
enough to brown them without burning j
or sticking, and turning the fresh ones to
the bottom so that nearly all may brown, j
Potatoes are also very nice boiled in lard t
like doughnuts. To those who love pot- i
pie, and do not succeed in getting it '
light, I can whisper a secret ; make the ;
dough without a bit of shortening, and '
leave the cover off your kettle for fifteen '
minutes, when it will be nearly done I
then clap on the cover, cook five min- ,
utesmore and serve, and ay good-by to j
tough, heavy dumplings." j
