I tTLTlKAL fSES 0Y LIME.
The atlvanUfs of the use of lime are
so many that it is almost imimssihle to
i pnuraerate them. Their effects may be
described as being both chemical and
. mechanical, and as being exercised both
1 upon the organic and inorganic constit
uents of the soil. The following may be
i taken as a summary of 6ome of the prin
cipal benefits to be derived from it ;
1. Upon deep alluvial and clay soil it
increases the crop of potatoes and ren
ders them less waxy. Sprinkled over
, them in the store heap, it preserves them
and when riddled over the cut sets, it
wonderfully increases their fertility.
'2. Lime eradicates the finger and dis
ease in turnips and gives greater sound
ness to the bulbs.
3. It gives, when applied to soft
meadow land, a larger production of
mere nutritions grasses. It also exter
minates coarse and sour grasses, des-
' troys couch graps, and acts jiower fully
' upon rye grasses.
4. Upon arable land is destroys weeds
of various kinds.

When the soil contains fragment of
granite or trap rocks, lime hastens their
decomposition and liberates the silicates.
11. Its combination with the acids in
the soil produces saline compounds
such as potash, soda, etc.
12. Strewn over young plants, it de
stroys or drives away the tu-nip tly.
L5. Worked in with grass seeds, the
beneficial effects of lime, chalk, marl,
and shell-sand have been visible for thir
ty yea is.
14. Applied to the rot heap, lime ef
fectually destroys the seeds of weed.
To sum its advantages : When pro
perly applied to the soil, it purities and
stimulates its action, thereby promoting
the growth of healthy vegetables of all
kinds.
The simple fact, that a man can clear
$.'50 f rom on acre of jiotatoes, does not
demonstrate that he can clear a pro ra
ta profit on 10,000 acres.
To insure a profit, pigs should be
growing and thrifty from the time they
are weaned ill six to ten months of age,
when they should lie ready to slaughter.

I waited a little while and saw the wasp

such evidence of intelligence I have had
a great respect for wasps, and gave or

of their carnivorous taste when I once
