I ICAL FACT!" AHOUT THE CARP FAM-

1 FKEf-H WATER FISH.
Ever since the appointment, in 171, '
of Trof. Spencer F. Baird as connuis- 1
siouerof fish and fisheries, "fish culture"" '
in the United states has been a matter :
of prowinji interest and imtaovtance.
The fish commission bejan by makintr
inquiry into the tlecrea.se of the food j
fishes of this country, and its constant
labor for the past two years lias been the j
propagation of food fishes in the waters j
of the I nited States. Shad and salmon. !
instead of being left to wander at their i
own sweet will through certain exclu- i
sive livers, travel about the United !
' States by express at the public expanse, I
and tire systematically colonized in all ;
waters where they can be successfully .
; propagated. They go by steamer to the ;
! four quarters of the earth, and the an- j
i nnal reports of the commissioner are '
enlivened by graphic accounts of how 1
: 10,(hhi salmon ova were "planted" in the j
, southern rivers of N'ew Zealand, far- .
; ried to that country by mail steamer, j
; the salmon eggs make a triumphal pro- I
: press inland, packed in manufactured j
ice. resting on elastic cushions of tropi- I
cal fern and shaded by clusters of the j
' same. The "new era,'" as Prof, jiairrf i
: calls the ieriod since the steam-hatching
process ha.s lrt'rn in use, is productive of j
marvelous results. .Not only have the j
; fresh and salt waters been reiveopled by
! the native fish, which were rapidly dis- j
; appearing, but valuable food lish have ;
i been imported, naturalized andaeelima-
i ted in American waters. Among the j
i most interesting of these strangers with
' in the gates is the carp, which was first j
brought to this country about three j
! years ago and has since been extensive- '
i ly propagated. It makes its headquar
ters here at the Capital, occupying the
carp ponds near the Washington tnonu- ;
i ment grounds, and there, a few days j
1 ago. a reporter found the carp in to ;
1 calls, and absorbed considerable infor- '
matiou in regard to the haunts, habits '
; and moral character of this new citizen.
; The carp ponds are bounded on the
; north by the While lot and the White :
, House grounds and on the south by the
river, and when some immense carp, in ;
sheer ecstasy of well being, leaps up for
; one shining minute into the sunshine.
, he sees the new State Department and .
the Treasury, the somhre tower of the
Smithsonian and the more sensational
; rotunda of the new national museum. 1
i And in the water, or out of the water,
' he is always aware of the Washington ;
' monument. The carp ponds are two in ;
number, and they vary in size from the j
i hatching pond, which is oflx'!1 feet, to '
' the great south pond, which covers three
1 acres and contains ;,( hh large fish,
'they are pretty ponds, regularly laid
out, with water plants and an occasional
, tree growing in theim. and full to the
solid, urassy brim of the warm, shallow,
t '.oiuly water thai the carp particularly
likes. A rustic gate f'pens the grounds
to the hatching ponds. n the island
; in the centre, which is approached bv a
, rustic bridge and a walk limit like the
levee, are two tiny picturesque little
I houses, in one ot which the eggs aie
hatched by steam. In the other the
' :-l n poifer found Ir. Ilessel, who ha.s
charge of the ponds, and r. ho, like the
critic with the whita owl. has made the
carp his study for years. jr. Ihsscl is
i at work on a diagram of the ponds,
beautifully iinbhed in color, which is
going to the r.erlin lish exhibition next
April, lie takes a little dip-net and
goes out to do the honors of the carp
ponds. A dip into tic water brings up
not hing bur bull-frogs green and salid,
and exiaeiliugly uninteresting. He
dips a great many times with the same
result. At ia-t the net brings up a sin
gle, shiuinc carp a liitle glittering
creature about an inch and a half long,
, with symptoms of black scales along the
upper part of the lack, and a warm
gold low down mi t lie sides. This is t he
hatching pom!. This lish was hatched
in October; in 'his pond are several
thousand just like him.
The carp has a family record. It is
one of the most ancient and dignified of
fishes and came nrigimdiv fr mi Vntr.il
Asia, and was brought to I in r. . .e cen
turies ago. In liohemiu. Au-tiia and
ieruianv il ha.s been domesticated, and
in Austria especially, where nre the
1 most extensive carp fisheries in Kurope.
its culture can be traced as far back as
: "'' yejir l-'J.. The carp ha.s had roval
: jiatronage. The Kmperor ;!mrles I .
of fo rmally granted special privi'eges to

Indeed, the carp has no reason to com
plain of its reception in l"au-oo. The
monks are great ly interested in it, ami
enliven their monotonous lives bv culti
vating it in ponds. It is a grateful lish.
' gives little t rouble, and rewards the
owner of the pond by increasing in a
sort of geometrical progression which is
' very pro.'itable. It is a pretty lish. well
proportioned, with "might, decided tints
: of olive, brown ami whitish-yellow or
orange. Xot a lish of prey, in consider
ation of the fact that iu p!.;e.- of the us
i "ii tcetii in the mouth it ha.s three, rows
of stout teeth in the throat. In the o!i-
unite of t 'enlial Kurope it has a habit of
; sleeping through the cold sensor., like a
bear. When 1'isees gets ready to paro
, dy I'rsa Major in this respect, a croup
of carp numbering iifty or a hundred
. make a cavity in the muddv ground,
i which Is tallied a "kettle." Then they
. literally put their heads togt ther, and
huddled in circles with their heads in
! the mud and the posterior part of the
j body raised and held immovablv, they
, pass the Winter eating nothing anil
! scarcely breathing. They take no food
i at all from October to "March, and in
some cold climates even later than that.
, The carp 'Iocs all its grow ing in warm
weather. May, June, July ami August. :
, It is an indolent tish, liking best stag
j nant or slowly running water, and it
likes the water muddy, with aipiatic
i plants, around the roots o( which it
, nestles. It is not very particular about
( ibs food, all being gi isi apparently that
, comes to its mill tlesh, vegetables, in-
sects, larva-, Indian meal, rye, flour, of
! fal-anything, in short, that man or na
ture sees tit to bestow oa it the caip
. eats, asking no quest ions for conscience"
; sake. It has bea n known to grow to an
immense size. It increases in length
only up to a certain age, but it will in
crease in circumference up to its thirtv
liflh year. Ir, the old times the monks
raised carp all along the Iteautiful blue
Hanube. There were giants in those
das, and when an unusually large carp
was eau-ht, they thought' the event
quite worthy to In- entered in theehroa
icles of the monastery. So we read of
the fvveiity-cight pounder which was
captured on Ascension dav, lsju. And
during the Crimean war, a I'n nch o ni
cer shot a carp in the Iianube which
i't ighcii sixi-seven pounds, one of the
scales, w hich w as in Dr. J b ssel's pos
session having a diameter of two and a
half inches, and by the testimony of
those same sea.les it was at k-jist t wentv
four years old. The norma! weight of
the carp, however, is on an average of
from three to three and three-fourth
pounds : a lish that has lived two Sum
mers will weigh two and three-fourths
or three and oiie-foutth poiftuls the vear

: In the Janube it grows to Un. On the
! whol... it is rather an uneventful life
; that the carp leads in the Government
; ponds. It is no carcfub'v sheltered and
its C7!?mic3 so htit at "My that . Las
absolutely no fxeitetnenls in li?e. In !
the native state it would have to look
out for apiatic birds, water-snakes and j
musk-rats, cranes and otters, and its ,
hereditary enemy, the snai'pincr-turtle. i
The snappinp-turtle has ln-en known to :
clear a pond of fish and then, led by its 1
sense of smell, to follow them up hill
and against ths stream. I.iit with the
watchful care and the wire screens that j
guard the out lets to the Goverment pond, ,
no carp would have any trouble in pet- .
ting his life, insured. It takes eight or
ten days to hatch the eggs, which are ;
placed on slides of glass in water and 1
kept in a temiK-rat nre of sir- or !i-.
The young tish are then put into the
the hatching iond before mentioned.- '
"When they are to be removed to another i
jxmd, the outlet to the jmuhI is unlocked j
with an iron ''key,'" a wire scrcm i
placed over it so that the fish cannot j
escape, and the water gradually drained. ;
The young are fed while in the hatch- i
ing IHiiHts. When put into the larger,
ponds they lake care of themselves. j
The carp in the south pond weigh from j
one to t wr. pounds. In the second pond ;
are J.Ki.fHK) fish. There are three dis- .
tiuct species, the scale carp, with reiru- ;
lar, concentrically arranged scales; the 1
minor carp, so called on account of the ;
very large seah-s, which run along the ;
sides of the body in three or four rows, I
the rest of the I tod 3' being bare, and the ;
leather carp, which has on the back only
a few scales, or none at all, and has a
thick, soft skin, which is like velvet to .
the touch. It will live in salt water as
well as fresh, and in the Ulack sea olden
attains a weight of lift ecu or twenty
pounds.
It is a good deal of a cosmopolite, the '
carp. It haunts ail the smaller and 1
larger rivers of Enroie. and likes also
the Sw iss lakes. Of the true carp pisci- '
culturists have nothing but praise to ;
speak, but something, as the result of a ;
inri-'i.llirviiri in the carp family, there re
sult such hybrids as the ( '-triis koH'trii,
a poor and bony tish, know n in Germany
as'-the poor man's lish.'" In Kurope,
where no carp culture hits been reduced i
to a science, the same field is used alter
nately for a carp pond and for the rais
ing of grain, and, as a consequence, i
timing the carp years the lish find the
ground full of favorite, food.
Let no fne mistake the carp for the
buffalo fish. There is a strong resent- '
blance, but to confound them is to do
great injust ice to those superior quali
ties which have induced the lish com
mission to introduce the carp into th' !
I "iiited States. The lish are sent out
from these ponds twice a year. They
are sent South during the Winter : in ;
April they are sent North, the smallest
sent away ltcing from two to seven inch
es. Five loin.ii-ed thousand little fish '
will lie hatched out this coming Sum
mer. A 113-one who has a suitable place
to put them can get them on application ,
to the fish commissioner. And all the
.voting man has to do who has gone
West to grow up with the country, and
is fired by an ambition to have a carp1
pond, is to come down to the ttain with
a bucket of water some line day and get :
hii carp. It will settle down as con
tentedly in soiiie Western pond without
a liana- as though its ancestors had never
swam down the castled Khine or flouted '
in the blue waters of Asia ic seas. I'
is one of the attractive and interesting
1 feat Civs of the city, tlesi- carp ponds.
The grounds are so pleasant and well
kept. The Soiid sod slopes so grecnl.v
down to the watt r. and in these early '
pring days one would rather sit on the
grass in t he sniihine t ban to breathe t he
breath of the galleries ami listen to ( 011
gression ll debate. The sun shines ; the .
warm, cloudy water is l ull of lights and
shadows: th-ie is a dandelion within
reach : the thurs in the water are taking
on new shades of green : now and then
there is the llash of a I'm, and a shy carp
swims away from 3011 a phantom lish.
