of this and other sections on last Saturday .
Pisrht The visitor arrived at about the
hour of 10.30 o'clock, aud was in the shape 1

of tlie shattered planet were showered down
on their respective localities. All which is
susceptible of a modicum of doubt, hut that

that it raised a sensation at the time stated,

were also on fire for several days, and pro

the destruction of a creat deal more valuable
property, which was only pit-vented by the
utmost dili-i-cnce n part of the reiidents of
that locality, who turned out and fouizht the

Saturday lait. The fires in both in-tances
were no" doubt started by sparks from pass

We only heard this week of the death of
our good old friend Mark Kibhihan. of Clear

years with that dieadful disease, cancer,
which literally ate away the lower portion

Hon. A. II. off roth writes us under

in the district, all of whom had been highly
recommended to Mr. Miller and were cer

could recall but a few of the n-imcs, ami of
these heoi.ly mentions Mr. Alj.l.onsus Ward,
of Fhenshurtr. and Me-rs. John T.'aab. Xa

comprise Ebrnsburg borough and Cambria

Our energetic friend, Mr. J. E. Shields,
of Lore t to, w ho does about as much as most
of them to keep the Freeman afloat, has
made up his mind toemhaik once more in
the mercantile business, and is now in the
east purchasinc a large atid varied assort
ment of dry goods, dress goods, notions, hats,
caps, boots, shoes, groceries, etc., w hich he
proposes to sell at prices which for chea pness
no one can excel. Ed. is one of the most re
liable business men in Cambria county, and
if good goods and square dealing have any
attractions for the people of that section, as
they undoubtedly have, he cannot fail to se
cure a lucrative trade.
Mr. Michael Kearnev, a highly respected
fitiz-n of Conemaugh borough with whom
we Were acquainted for more than a quarter
of a century, met with a terrible death at the
Oautier Works, Johnstown, on Thursday
morning last, in consequence of hcing struck
by one of tlie fragments of an eleven foot
belt-pullev which burst and flew in all direc
tions, dealing destruction to everything in its
way, one of the pieces, weighing about one
thousand pounds being thrown a distance of
over fifty feet. The lragment which struck
the unfortunate man tore a terrible hole in
his stomach, fractured both of his legs and
his left collar bone, arid nearly severed his
left arm at the shoulder. Deceased was born
in Minister township about fifty years ago,
and lived for a considerable time in Tyrone,
where he was employed as an engineer on
the Tvrone and Clearfield Branch Bailroad.
He w-is a brother in-law of ex-Treasurer
Cox, the two gentlemen being married to sis
toi s, and was always faithful in the discharge
of his duties as husband, father ncighborand
citizen, ns weil as the fullrnient of his obli
gations as a member of the Catholic Church.
His funeral took p'ace on Friday, and was
one of tiie largest ever seeu in Johnstown.
May he rest in peace.
We never ehronicled a death with more
sincere regret than, we do that of Mr. Au
gustine J. Fogle, of Altoona. who died of
consumption about one fl'elock on last Fri
day afternoon. We knew Mr. Fogle for
many years, and having learned to esteem
him as one of our most intimate and faith
ful friends, we can truly sav that a nobler
heart never ceased to beat than was stilled
in death when "Gust" Fogie, as he was
familiarly called, was summoned from time
to eternity. Mr. Fogle was one of the best
known and most respected citizens of Al
toona, and although he commenced life as a
poor boy, l:e succeeded by well-directed
energy and honest endeavor in acciiniulnt ing
quite a comfortable competence, which has
of course been left to his wife, son and
daughter, all of whom survive him. De
ceased was married a number of years ago
to Miss Maggie Sullivan, eldest sister of our
esteemed friend, Dennis Sullivan, and also
of ex-City Treasnrei John C. Sullivan. re
cently deceased, and was aged about 47
years. Throughout liis entire life he was a
"zealous, earnest aid devout Catholic, and
having received the last rites of the Church
and (bed an edifying death, there is every
reason to believe that he has found favor
with God. At least such is our heartfelt
piayer on behalf of his immortal soul.

Don't part with your money until you
know the truth. Interested parties are
spreading the reports that MR. JOHN
WANAMAKER is not interested in the
old and famous OAK HALL Clothing
business and does not personally direct
its affairs.
Nothing could be more Untrue!
Mr. JOHN WANAMAKER has pre
cisely the same relations to Oak Hall as
in the past.
WANAMAKER & BROWN is what
it has been ever since Mr. Brown died, ia
years ago.
Mr. JOHN WANAMAKER per
sonally watches over the faithful prepa
ration of the stock of MEN'S AND
BOYS' CLOTHING, and the conducting
cf the store. Nothing is allowed to pass
his eye that is not straightforward and
true to the interest of those who have
natronized the house for iq years and
depend on its reliability.
From all appearances the year 1880 is to be
the largest in sales ever known.
The READYMADE Department is Better Stocked 1
The BOYS' Department is Better Stocked 1 !
The CUSTOM Department is Better Stocked!!!
The SHIRT Department is Better Stocked !!!1
Ail this will be apparent on FIRST SIGHT !
Please call whenever you can and look through
this BEEHIVE of a Building, so busy with its
Hundreds of Workpeople and Customers. Do
not forget that Clothing of the W. & B. make
will stand better service than any other that can
be got and that it does not cost any more (if as
much) as other makes.
