Carrolltown, Ct'iJu-m cm;:-,y, is to he a

and we can't say it should be, that this pro-'

by the publication known as the Xorthrrn
Camtn-ia .Vr, partially printed in Carroll
town. The fools seem not all to be dead. A
twelve-hours' walking match, go-a5-vou-p!eae,
is hooked for Johnstown on Christ
mat day. A medal and some money prizes
will gladden the eyes and pockets of the
winners, and soon after there wiil possibly
be an order or two at some undertaker's es
tablishment. Tho very latest is that Mr. if. Edpar
King, of the Altoona Radical, is an aspirant
for the office of State .Senator on the Repub

compels us to sav that we mean to elect a
i Democrat to the office named next vear.

The members and friends of tho Pres

We are informed by an Aitoona paper
that not only is the right of Mr. Thomas
Griffith to assume the oflice of Sheriff to be
contested by Mr. Michael J. Nagle, but that
the likelihood is that developments will bo

truth of the adage that one must go away
from home to learn the news.

examination showed that, although no
bones were broken, he had u!Tered serious
internal injuries. He was taken to the Lan

of the employes visited the null less than half

seem to be unavoidable that it was either
the work of an incendiary or the result of

j Through an oversight on the part of the
; printer, the presentment of the (irand Jury
i of Cambria county, sitting last week, with
'f- C. T. Roberts as foreman, appeared
I shorn of a most important particular. The
: Court TTouse in that doeument was not only
i branded as "utterly tnd entirely inadequate
for the accommodation of the people of the
i county," but was also correctly condemned
i as being t(na. The wall looking toward
; the south is represented to be in an insecure
! condition, while in th not improbable event
: of a lire, the records of the. county must irre-

of trouble and expense on the people to du

take which will be altogether unpardonable.

Death or "Bt.ack Sam." Not a few of
our readers will be sorry to hear that "Black
Sara," as he was familiarly called, orSnmnel i
Williams, as be called himself his true name !
being something else died in Indiana town i
about a week ago. In years agoue he was
an employee about the several hotels of Kb-
ensburg in the capacity of porter, doing his !
duty well, but specially distinguishing him- '
self as the possessor of "a voice whose melody 1
uptuned was wont to disturb the re.st of our
residents at about the hour of 5 o'clock, rain
or shine, every morning. Sam was born in
Virginia, of negro parents, and was a slave, i
the name of his master being Sanderson.
Becoming dissatisfied wifh slavery, at the
age of probably 20 years h ran away and
succeeded, after a variety of adventures, in
reaching Pennsylvania. Our first acquain
tanceship with him dates in 18.it), when Sam
was living in I omcansville, Blair county.
The old Pottage Railroad was then in exist
ence, and Sam, on the look-out for passen
gers for the hotel which he represented,
chanced to see amongst the throng tin; fa
miliar face of his old master "What, did I
do then?" said Sam; "why, I just got a
big carving-knife and stuck it in my hoot,
and then I scooted for some p!ac where there
was no railroad !" He was not pursued, owing
to a mult iplicitv of reasons not here rteeess- :
ary to enumerate, hut up to the hour of the !
enunciation by President Lincoln of th" pro- ;
clamatiou abolishing slavery throughout the ;
length and breadth of the Union, he was '
haunted by a continual fearof recr.pture and
