They take to water as naturally as fish,
but, strange to say, can't swim. They
dive and crawl along the bottom with
great activity and delight. They can
not walk barefooted, their feet cracking

The Iltlonn (Montana) Ihrahl tells
this queer .tory of a mammoth squash
which was fed on milk and rrodneed

markable to pass unrecorded. It is of the
California mammoth vanetv, nn.l considera
b!v the smallest h-ilU" of several of the
same kind shown in the same collection.
Some six or seven weeks ss, when little
more than trn pounds weitrht, this squash
was- accidentally severed troin its vine uy me :
t'ead of a farm" employe. Mr. .lohnsori le- '
plored the aecii'ent. the vegetable beins;
favoiite and the first to set out from the I
blossom, and he entertained great expeeta- '
tions of it I
The hired man, seeing his distress, sup;-
pestetl that tlio squash be taken and raised j
by band. Johnson confessed he did not !

The squash fed huntrrily on the lacteal
fluid.-' OnltlK' start it nbsorU'd a pint of
milk in a few hours. This was presently
increased to a quart, and twice, a day it was
thus rationed to the first day of the fair, on
Monday last. It thrived wonderfully on its
novel liriiiginjr up, and neighbors who drop
ped in from time to 'ime to see it, expressed
their surprise and astonishment at this sin-

! when taken away for exhibition weighed
j within a fraction of foitv pounds.
j There were many at the fair whose curi
: osity was great ly excited about this squash,
1 and Mr. Johnston promised to cut the vegc
: table in thn presence of witnesses and ex
; hibit to them ils "true inwardness." This
was done this morning before a iarsc con
course of people, and the amazement of the
' multitude may lie pictured, but not deseiib- j
ed, when it was open to their wondering i
I ryes. Divided carefully m the middle, tlie
j top half was removed, disclosiiiic a globe of
beautiful, Rolden-hued butter, with plump,
i filled seeds peeping out from all sides of the
luscious looking hall. Its weight was esti
i mated by many of the best judges at ten
', pounds, and was as fresh and fragrant to
j the smell as a spring blown daisy. It was
! the unheard-of novelty more than the surpas
sing beauty of the sight that raised the en
; thusiastie outburst of the crowd as they
viewed this remarkable blending of farm
and dairy products. q'he "meat" of the
snuash in. richness of color, equaled that of
the butter hall, and alter everybody lias had
a fair chance to see and .satisfy themselves
of the genuineness, of both, and investigate
to their hearts' content the imiijue exhibit, it
will be divided up and parceled out to a
dozen or more parties, to whom also will be
given portions of the butter for trial. Mr.
.Uilm.-ton receives from the citizens of Helena
a special premium of $20 fortius rarest speci
men of a 'butter squash" ever raised by
hand, or for that matter by nature's owii
process. We think it will be generally ac
knowledged a wondrous product, I he counter

This Sarsaparilla i a combination of
vegetable all cralives-St illingia.Man
.Irnke.Yellow Dock with the Iodides
of l'otassium and Iron, and is the
most efficacious medicine yet known
for the diseases it is intended to cure.
Its ingredients are fo skilfully
combined that the full alterative
effect of each is assured, and while
it is so mild as to be harmless even
to children, it is stilt so effectual as
to punrc out from the system those
impurities and corruptions which
develop into loathsome disease.
The reputation it enjoys is derived
from its cures, and the confidence
which prominent physicians a!l over
the country repose in it proves their
experience of its usefulness.
Certificates attesting its virtues
liave accumulated, and arc con
stantly being received, and as many
of these cases are publicly known,
thev furnish convincing evidence of
the" superiority of this Sarsaparilla
over every other alterative medicine,
bo cencrally is its superiority to any
other medicine known that we need
do no more than to assure the public
that the belt qualities it has ever
possessed are strictly maintained.
