MORS MTfSTERTOrH THAW THE FALLS THEMJELVFS THE DEPTH OF THK WATER EXCITINO KXTLORA TIOVP OF GOVERNMENT ENGINEERS. The Niagara correspondent of the Syr I aeupe Standard writes: The canon of Xiacara is fur mor myster i ious than Hip falls themselves. Witliin tisc ' area of civilization in America no one was abl to snoefssfuliv pieree thronprh the fierce and terrible un.ler"eurrent to the bottom un til, recently, the Government itself thought I it necessary in behalf uf science to undertake j the tak. "All the ereatchenies imagined to i be fitrietly seientifie were pat in operation I bv bunglers to obtain the depth of water ! neath the falls. Bars of railroad iron, pail J of stones, and all unreasonable and bulky and awkward instruments were attached to I lone lines and cast off the railroad briilpo : and elsewhere but po sitively refused to sink ' the very bulk, o; t'te instriiineats D in nsaf j fieient, no matter what their wc;g ii, t fjive j the powerful undercurrent a way to buoy l them up upon the surface or near it. j -piie United States Corps of Fnjiiiieers, ' however, with a small l-ad of only twelve ' pounds weigl.t, attached to a slender n.pe or sounding cord, easiiv obtained the depths : from the falls V. the lower bridge. As yur ' correspondent assisted in the hydroprapiiical ' operations, the fart may be piven as they j presented themselves. One day we launch, j ed in a small boat not far below the falls, and entered on a most exciting and jwrilous : exploration of the canon. The old guide, j long in charge of the minature ferry situated 1 here, accompanied the party. ith great difficulty- we approached within a short dis : tance of the American Falls, which darted ; great jets of water on us and fur out into the j stream. The roar was so terrible that no voice or i human sound, however near we were to one i another, could be heard. The leadsman east ' the line, which passed rapidly down and j told off S15 feet. This was quite near the j shore. Tassintr out of the friendly eddy i which had assisted us up so near the fall we I shot rapidlv down stream. The next east of : the lead told off 100 teet, deepening to 102 j at the inclined railroad. The average depth i to the Swift lritt, where the river suddenly i becomes narrow with a velocity too gret.t to ', be measured, wasl'.a feet, .lust under the j lower bridge the whirlpool rapids set in. and ; so violentiv are the waters moved that they. : rise like ocean waves to the height of 20 feet, j At this point joar correspondent, at the time of the survey, computed the depth at : 'J10 feet, which is accepted as approxin.ately ' correct. I The terrors of the gorge below this point I are known to but few. Indeed, the foot of man scarcely evertieads this infernal region i where almost peihendieiilar walls rise on j each side of the vvrue of the river from 270 i to UtiO feet in height. Here the continual i crumbling of the rock have formed a preei i pitous pathway in plices on the river's edge : elsewhere one'tnust cling to crevices in the j rocks, to jutting cragi or otherwise to get i along. A "party of four of us made a snrvey of the interior i f this canon from Lewi-toii : to Suspension Ilriuge, Willi great tiilhculty : we clambered along. It was a fearful yet exciting exploration. At times the river ; would rise suddenly some to or even 15 feet. as if a great dam anove had broken, causing a hasty retreat of the parties up the sides of the cal.on. Kr'-in points above mcksand earth frequent- ly tell, causing lively apprehensions, and, to add to the catalogue of embarrassments, an occasional rattlesnake attempted to retard our progress, and one of th. in whs killed ; and his rattles preserved in commemoration of the event. Getting into the canon at Lewisti'ii was comparatively easy, but mak ing .!!'.- way out was another thing. Near ly a mill; beiow Deveaux College, which is situated half a mile north of Suspension bridge, tin- possibility of making ur way along the river's edge ceased. Night was ju-t approa. hii g. and it wa- a hard day's work, neai.'y. make I.ewi-ton. Above the rucks towered nearly ieet. A OLD TIME TROJECT. Speaking of newsjaper subscriptions and advance payments reminds us of an institution which sprang unand flourish ed down East in the olden time. In ls49, we think it was, when the venerable Thomas "W. Newman, now of Brooklyn, N. Y., waa publishing the Ilallowell, Me., GizetU, and we were a "cub"' in that office, an active, energetic gentle man named I 'ease found himself out of i business. He went to Mr. Newman, and after asking him about his subscrip tion accounts; due, purchased them. i For one and two years subscriptions he paid fifty cents on the dollar. For three : and four years, forty per cent., and for 1 others from thirty to ten per cent. These were the days when publishers had to give long credits, and the amount purchased was something like four : thousand dollars, the (iazitte publisher realizing aliont sixteen hundred dollars cash. At one stroke he wiped out nil j t ho subscription indebtedness due him, i and had clean books. Mr. Pease set out collecting, and in a short time found that the business was one that w ith proper care would pay. He pur chased the accounts of another paper ami put a collector into the held with himself. Within a year he owned the accounts of half a dozen papers, and had several collectors at work. The business was one that required care and tact, but Mr. Pease appeared to be equal to the task, for he extended his work wonderfully. Not long after his lirst purchase he opened an otliee in Boston, and purchased the accounts of any nev.spajrs that had them to sell. "With headquarters in Boston, he kept col lectors in the field in all the New Eng land counties. Each collector used a horse i1 nd wagon and at intervals bills were sent in. He was kept in one. lo cality until he became thoroughly ac quainted with it and had no difiicuity j in finding the man he wanted. Mr. Pease built his business up to very large proportions, and we think gave employ ment to nearly one hundred collectors i and clerks. At this day there is no tell- ; ing- what proportions the business would have assumed had Mr. Pease lived, but ' at the time he was doing so well he died. ! His successor was less enthusiastic in j tiie work, and finally c losed it out. That the business was a success in the right i hands is beyond dispute, and the same field is now open to an enterprising man j in any locality where newspapers flour- ! ish and subsc filers will not pay in ad- 1 vance. Pen and Pres.". ' j Somk Cruiot s Facts. Marcus Var ro writes that there was a town in Spain undermined with rabbits, another like wise in Thessaly by moles or mole wharps. In Africa the people were com pelled by locusts to leave their habita tion ; 'and out of Gyaros, an Island one of the Cyelades the islanders were forcel by rats and mice to fly away; moreover, in Italy, the city of Air.yehv was destroyed by serentst. In Kthiopia there is a great country lyin? waste and deserted by reason that it wa.- formerly disjH'op.leil by scorj'h.ns; and if it be true what Theophralus rejxirteth the Treriein were chased away by certain worms called seolopendres. Annius writes that an ancient c ity". 5ituated near the 'elseian Lake, and called f'ontene bra, was in times past overthrown by pismires, and that tlie place is there upon vulgarly called to this dav the (amn of the Ants. In Media, saith IMouorus Sieulus, there was such an in tinite ninnt.ei- of sparrows that eat up and deyonee.1 the seed which was cast into the ground, so that men were con strained to depart from their old habita tions and remove to other places. r ' 4 T H H i: A A HHM KK A A J It II K A .H II KEK A A V Cheapest!'
