We received a welcome visit on Satnrday
last trrim our old and respected friend. 31 r.
Voter M.-Xa lly. of Altoona. More than forty
years a-o Mr.' McV. resided in Minister, four
miles east of this place, where lie carried on
the tailoring business. This was during the
time that the old Porta jr railroad was beinc
constructed. After that he removed to Hol
lidaysburer, where he continued at his busi
ness until a few years aco, meantime amas.
ine quite a conipetence, when ho chanced his
hn-ation to Altooua. Although old ae bas
left its traces upon him, we were -dad to
know that he enjovs escellent health, and nt
trust ;that lit- may live to enjov many more
year? of peaceful" prosperity. -
On Monday eveninjj. at a point a short
distance ea-tof Johnstown, one of the drivers
of the liv-omotive attached to the Fast Line
east broke, throwing the parallel rod up
through the floor of the cab. This frichten
ed the fireman, a young man named Walter
Dobson. whose home is in Greensburff, and
lie ran over to the engineer's side of the en
cine and juniedoff while it was coin? at
full speed. The train was stopped immedi
ately, and on eninu hack Dolon was found
lyinz nneoiiH.-ioiw with a fractured 5kn!l.
He was taken back to Johnstown, w here he
received prompt medical attention. Nt
mornimi he was removed to his home at
ireensbur.;, ami at la-t accounts was mJt
expected t live.
Co. A, aptain Davis, of th- Fifth real

were at one hundred yards distaii. e. All the
shoot in was excepti"::ai!v ood. but the

proved the best. At tw hundrctl yards, one
round only was fired, and owing to the la.lo

only five or sK times. Sout- more practice
of the same sort, hut at a Yet sraterdu-iaue,

1 Seijtet.. T'urin? the absenee from home a
' month or so aero of Oeo. M. Keade, Ksq., one
of the most prominent and successful mem
bers of the Kbensbursj Bar, his only dautrh
ter, Miss J. Hcien, was united in marriaae to
Mr. T. IL Stophell, the Lev. Mr. Thomas,
pastor of the Cambria township Oon-recra-tional
church, twine the officiating clereyman.
The bride is a winsome younc lady of proba
bly 22 summers, and up to Saturday eveuina
hist was an inmate of her father's elegant
mansion, while the hus'iaiid, a few years her
senior, is a resident of Strongs-town, Indiana
eonntv, and has a reputation which, so far as
we know, is without blemish. The twain
w ho are now one had for a considerable time
kept company, thouirh in what is understixMl
to have bei-n" direct opposition to the com
mands of the lady's father she has no
mother living. Their meetin-r- were conse
quently hold awav from the parental home,
hut that they ha'd frequent opiortunity to
enjoy each "others' society is pretty weil
known, ami that in the end' they were legally
married cannot be denied. Subsequent to
this nniri ia-c, which, as before stated, occur
red about one month atro, Mrs. Stophcll re
mained under her father's roof, N-iiis; occa
sionally visited tub ro.i by her newly-made
husbaiid. Mr. Mopiiell seems for a time not
to have been in a position, or else lacked the
nerve, to publicly claim his wife, thou-rh the
marital relations existint; between them was
boldly avowed and unquestionably acee; ted
bv the entire community. On .Natunl.'iy last,
however. Mr. Stophcll arrived in town and
put up at the Baiir House, where he was
joined not lone alter by his faithful youni;
w ile. The intention of 'the wedded pair, if
we are ri-ht!y informed, was to take th.e
evening train for Johnstown, but owint; to
the peculiarity of the circumstances sur-roumlin-the
tiioeihs. btopheii was observed
to be in a hiuh state of excit-meut on reach
inii the hotel, and this was tint diminished as
the moments flew by. While the husband
and a lew friends were en-rayed in the effort
to soothe and comfort the suiTerin lady,
thev were surpiied by the abrupt entrance
ino the room of Mr. Mathiot Keade. the only
brother of the distracted bride, who flourish
ed a loaded revolver ami seemed intent upon
luakins short work of the man who had hud
the temerity to become his brother-in-law
without his sanction or con-sent. It miirht
have been said earlier in this to us unpleas
ant narrative that Mr. Pefodo the younger
had also been in!ioxit!y opp.cd to the woo
insr and vvinnin!; of his'sist.-r by Mr. stophell,
thou-h on what special pronnd has not been
developed. Seep:!; the peril of her husband,
Mrs. st-npholi valient ly interposed herself
between iiis person and harm, ami a moment
later youm; Lead- was disarmed throu-jh the
unite,! efforts of Mr. stophell and Mr. Celes
tine ISlair. son of the landlord, who chanced
to he present. The revolver was found lo be
anew one and hail to all appearances not
only been recently purchased, but was heav
ily 'loaded in nil its compartment. For the
eternal welfare of all com-erneil. it is a srood
thiicrthat the de-id'y weapon was stricken
aside before time was afforded for pulling
the triuircr.
Such w us the eridir.r; of this part of what
may yet prove a real tragedy, or at least Ik;
attended w ith fatal results," ami Mr. Keade
the younirer, after beinir unceremoniously
placed Ar. tin comh'it, as above stated, 1 ast;
ly left the premises. If that was all then- is
to relate of the sad affair it could be told
without a si-h of re-ret ; but the exeitin-;
scenes throii-h which she had just parsed
proved too much for po-r Mrs. stophell, al
ready s-a.-ierin-, as we have intimated, from
nervous excitement, and she at once took to
bed in tii.; hotel and continued to irovv worse
and worse until s' o'clock Sunday morning,
when hysterical coma intervened. In this
latter condition tho unfortunate lady has re
mained up to present w rititu; ( Wednesday
forenoon ), without any chaii-e in her syin
toms, except tlmt slie lias partaken veryspar
iiiirly if liquid nourishment on several occa
sions, thou-h remaining in bed meantime
entirely unconscious and almost motionless.
Drs. Keim iind Lenimon were called in with
out delay and did ail they could for the suf
fering lady, hut such is the exceptional na
ture of tie- case that il was deemed advisable
on Tuesday last to summon Dr. John Low
miui, of John-town, who reached this place
tli- same evenin-r ami at once held a consul
tation with the medical -enileman above
named, the conclusion reached being that the
stricken lady has a very slim chance for life,
and even should she survive the pmbanilities
are that her reason will be dethroned.
It is needless U say that the afflicted hus
band and father are constant aitendants at
the bedside of her whom they both love dear
ly, and should led in iiis mercy restore her
once more to health and consciousness it is
fair lo presume that no feather opposition
will be made by either father or brother to a
union w liich thus far ha- broti-ht nothing but
discomfort and disaster t" all concerned.
M'oiii-l there be any chuncie in Mrs. Sto
phclPs condition U-fore our paper crocs to
press we w iil note the fact as a postenpt to
tiiis hastily wrilb-n account of one of the
sadd-st episodes in real life it has ever been
our duty a- a chronicler of passing events to
put upon record.
I. S. Since our paper was put to press Mr.
Keade has called our attention to several im
pel tant omi-.-ions in the above r-pnrt, but as
it is too late to mak- the desired corrections
this week, we promised and shall do so with
pleasure next week. Mr. Keide also in
formed us with head bowed in sorrow that

whose ailment he ays is brain fever, to live

i nish a few ink drops from the alley of the nor'h
branch of the Uonemauirh in relation to a recent
, pleasant trip enjoyed lor the most part In voor
) company. Hnvinif irot on the E. fc C H. K. train
at liradley's cnt on th-? occasion referred to, I nd
. rise all who want to do likewise to stand at the
' switch In full view of the engineer, so that he can
! see them in time to stop the train. If they .1u. It
, will ave them the trouble and fatieue ot runninir
i Bfier the train, as I had to do. Bradley's Is ca i led
; a;fl:--ir titalion, but 1 have never yet succeeded in
1 finding a flar or a stat ion at that "point. However
1 the kind-hearted eondnctor told tne in his pleasnnt
wy to make myself visible hereafter, and tlmt
j remark led me "to think how many there are in
i tho world who are too backward to come forward
until It is too late to secure the prixe they are
I seekinir or gain the object they are after.
j Hut I started ont to ay wimethinir Bh.-rat our
I trip, and so here p-oes. We reached Altoona in
dne time, and from the:e I "branched"' off to H.d
! lidayshurir, which Is nor the place it was thirty
nine years airo. Hut like people, like places
j fharifie is writ'an on tveryrhin-f. ( ince there. I
was not lonir in fimline i he doctors I was seek inir.
: and gentlemen of the riirlit stamxi I found them
I to be. They understantl physioloi-y to jierfeetion.
I and could tell what ails me as weil as I can my
i pelf. Thanks to them b r their kindness.
By the way, the rolllnn; mill at that place he
i lortus. I was fold, to the tt. I. (to., of Johnstown.
' and the employees say they have preat reason to
I reoiiec thereat.
While In Hollidayshnr-r I chanced to meet the
only t wo men I know t h re. f ne of These is tlol.
Wiii. K. Piper, wlio was all smiles and wonder lo
see old Iiewi so f.ir from home.
t n the west or left hand side of the road com inn
i lrom IIoMiilnysbnrc to Altoona. as well as alonir
the easlern slope of the Alle-rhcnies. which s, em
to frown down upon the valley below, one mny
look from 'he car window nnd iret a irlnrious view
of some of t he most m-i Knifieent sernery mortal .-ye

; to my y.nthlul days on tiie Atlnntie prinre, where
: an'occasiona I opj.o'rtunity was aflarded for viewinz
the wreck ot a noble ship, with hull turned ap-d le
down and the entire work ot art totally destroyed.
' Yet there is no work of art a' all to be compared
' to the works of nature. No sir : if the hulls of the
! (Treat Ka-tern and thefrrent Western were put
j together they would be nr-n-rht fn comparison
1 with r-itiire"s"handrwork. If I hud the eloquence
i of Iiemosi henes or the ability ol the urearest of
! knosrn artists I could not describe or paint to lite
i the beauties of this wonderful scene. And hew
peculiarly impressive are the splits to be seen in
1 the neighborhood of the "Horse Shoe Bend.'"
' where there Is enonjrli to command the atteuUon
' of the wisest -reolmr f.t and excite tne wonder and
i admiration of tho shiest enirjneer. It l a mystery
. Indeed how the different sTratas of rn--s have
. been tossed up at this point by some powerful
eruption avvav hack In the treat unknown. And,
i oh ! what a m'firhtv work ot enndnecrin .7 art Is the
treat I'a. K. K. a"it winds ar ound the sides of the
highest mountains, skirts the widest and deepest
: chasms, and towers lar above tiie tallest of trees!
And how plain to be seen l the heavy trra-lo on
' the west side of the Horse Shoe Bend, where It is
almost 00 feet to the mile: Yet it is n 't all a
subject of wonder alone, for it is almo-'. trraad
enoueh to be worshipped. The railroad eompany
has spar. d neither trouble nor expense to beautny
the surronndlniiS nt this point. Insi Je the "Stio ""
i a lar-.'c. level plateau i as been laid out, and some
' of the most skil.ful florists have been exereisina;
their taties and talents in arraru-anir elpjfiut flow

and all formed in aecordanco with strict mcnsTira-
Tion occupies a position in inu ceiuri oi mc uuu
grounds.
Then comes the tunnel near the summit of the
mountain, which deserves to be ranked anionic
the -treat wonders of the world, but of which It
is needless for me to speak, so much baring al
ready been written about il.
The account of our p!easanf sojourn and kind
