A STOKY OF THK (HJ)KX TIMK.
; Captain John Hull was th mint-master
of Massachusetts, and coined all the
money that was made. His was a iic-av
line of business ; for, in the earlier days
' o( the colony, t he current coinage con
sisted of the sold and silver money of
Kiioand. Portugal and Spain. Those
! coins boinij scarce, the people were of ten
forced to barter their commodities in
stead of sell ins them.
For instance, if a man wanted to buy
a coat ho perhaps exchanoed a bear skin
fur it : if he wished for a barrel of mo
lasses he misht purchase it for a pile of
boards. Musket balls were used instead
! !'arthins. The Indians had a sort of
i.i "iiev ca'.h d wampum, which v. as mad--ot
'clam sh. )!-': and thisstranso soil of
specie was likewise taken in payment of
debt by Hn.slisli settlers. Ilank Bilis
had never been hoard of. There was not
money onoiish of any kind in many parts
of the e,,lmtiy to pay their ministers : so
that thi v had soinot iim-s to take quintals
of tisli. bushels of corn, or coiilsof wood
instead of silver and S"ld.
As the people mew more numerous,
and t heir t rade with one a not her increas
ed, the Avant of current money was still
nioiv sensibly teit. To suppiy the de
mand, (ieneral Court passed a law for
osi :il ii i-hiiis a coiiiase of shillmss. six
pences and threi-pences. ( r,.tain -lohn
Hiiil was appointed to manufacture this
money, and was to have about one shil
lins out of every twenty to pity him for
hi-' trouble in maUins thoni.
Hereupon all the obi silver in the col
ony Avas handed iivor to Captain John
Hull. The buttered ail.ir c;.ns and
tankards. I suppose, and silver buckles,
and broken spoons. :,p,d siiver hilts of
swords that had iisnred a' court, all such
curious old art icles w ere doubt less thrown
into the melt im.; pot lose! her. l'.ut by
far the sroater part of the silver consist
ed of bullion from the mines in South
America, which the Kny;lish buccaneers
(who were little better than pirates i had
taken from the Spaniards and brought to
Massachusetts.
All this old and new silver beins
incited down and coined, the result was
an iimiii use ainopiil of splendid shilling's,
sixpences and throejieiirts. Each had
the date 'i."'J on the one side, and the
fisu re of a pine tree on the other side.
Hence they were called pine tree shil
lings. And for every twenty shillings
that he coined. ou will remember. Cap
tain John Hull was entitled to put one
shilling in his own pocket. The Magis
trates soon began to sustH'ct that the
minlniaster would have the best of the
bargain. Ti ey offered him a large sum
of money if ho would give up the twen
tieth shilling vCniohhe was continually
dropping into his pocket. Ihit Captain
John Huil declared that he was perfectly
sat islied with the shilling: and well might
he be. for so diligently did he la hot that
in a few years his jiockets, his money
bag and his strong box were overllowing
w ith pine tree shillings. This w as prob
ably the case when he came into posses
sion of his grand father's chair; and as
he had worked so hard at the mint, it
was certainly proper that he should have
a comfortable chair to rest himself in.
When the mititmaster had grown very
rich, a voting man. Samuel Sewell by
name, courted his only daughter. His
daughter whose name Ave do not know,
but we w ill call her Betsy was a tine,
hearty damsel, by no means so slender as
some young ladies of our days. On the
contrary, having always fed heartily on
pumpkin pies, doughnuts. Indian pud
dings and other Puritan daint ies. she Avas
as round and plumpasa pudding. "XV it n
this round, rosy Miss Betsy did Samuel
Sewell bill in love. As he was a young
i man of good character, industrious in
his businessand a niomler of the church,
the mintmastor very readily gaA'e his
consent.
1 "Yes. you may take her." said he, in
his rough way. "and you Avill lind her a
, heavy bunion enough."
On the wedding day Ave may supjiose
: that holiest John Hull dressed himself in
a plain coat, all the buttons of which
: were made from pine tree shillings; the
buttons of his waistcoat w ere six)enees;
. and tiie knees of his sniall-cloi lies were
buttoned with threeiH-itces. Thus at
tired, he Silt with gieat dignity in his
grandfathers chair ; and being a port'y
old gentleman, he completely oiled it
from elbow to t Ibow. On the oposite
si de i if the room. bet ween her bridesmaids.
Sitt Miss l'.etsv. She Wits blushing Avith
: all her might, and looked like a full-
' blown peony, a great red apple or any
oliier round and scarlet object.
There, too. was thebridogroom. dress-
' ed in a line purple coat and gold-laced
waistcoat, with as nm.-'n finery as I'uri-
: tan laws and customs would allow him
o. ' to nut on. His hatr -,vas croiiMd close
i to his head, liecauso Kovernor J'.nilicott
i had forbidden any man to wear it ltelow
j th1 cars. Hut he w as a very presentable

THE CHILD-DYKE.
Holland is a lieautifnl country, full ..f
green lields, with cattle and sheep graz
ing in the pastures; but there are few
trees, and no hills to be seen. The
ground is s i fiat and low. that two or
three times the sea has rushed in over
parts of it. and destroyed whole towns.
In one of these floods, that occurred
about two hundred years ago. more than
twenty thousand of the people were
drowm d. and in some of the towns tint
were il led by thai calamity n-.l a.
creature was left alive.
A large part of the waterthal came in
at thetnueof the lloo.i. still remains.
It is called "the Mans," and in one pari
of it there is a little green island a part
of nil old dyke, or a dam which is call
ed the "kinder-ih k-." or child-dke.
and it got its name in this v.ay :
The waters rushed over one of the lit
tle Tries!. uid villages, and no fine had
any varning. In one of thr- houses
there lay a child sound asleep in its cra
dle an old fashioned civ.dic. made ti.rii'
and strontr. of good stout wood.

The people wire all drowned in their
beds, and the house was torn from its
foundat ion. and liokin into pices, but
the little cradle .Moated -il into the an
gry sea on that dark night In uring with
in it its precious burden.
When the morning came there was
nothing to be seen of the village or the
green meadows. All Avas water. Hun
dreds of people were out in their boats
trying t save as many lives as ns.,ihlc :
and on this little bit of an island that I
have sok -n of. Avhat do oii think th-y
foiind ? Why. that same old cradle, with
the baby fast asleep in it. and the old
cat curled up at her feet, all safe and
sound.
AVliere the little Yoyairers came from,
and to whom they belonged, no one
could tell. Hut in meinoi of them this
little island was called the kinder
dyke" the child-dyke and it goes by
this name to this day; and this story is
told to thousands of the little tieoph' all
over Holland, as a remarkable instance
of (bid's l'ro idence.
llbTOIill AM MMssAoMs. A curious
list might be made of the strange meth

body of a hare sent to him as a present.
The instigator of the Ionian revolt
, .,.,;, ist l',.jia sent his agent, a trustv
' slave, with A'erbal orders to shave his
head, when the necessary instructions
appeared traced on the skin lx-neath.
During Mahomined's wars, letters of
j this kind were frequently plaited in the
long hair of female slaves. The medie
val fashion of Avriting in ink Avliich only
became visible when held to the tire is
well known; but Cardinal Kioheliou
surpassed even this by his device of a
despatch whose alternate lines made an
entirely different sense from that of the
letter as a whole. One of tiie French
chiefs of the Fronde war concealed an
important letter in a roasted crab. War
ren Hastings, when blockaded in Ben
ares, by Clieyte Singh, appraised the
' English army of his situation by dis
