Is the reason given for a signal failure by
Miss Helen Totter to draw a fall houss at

economy complained of may possibly consist
in the fact that Helen wasn't tho g-irl the

Ilev. T. It. Jones, pastor of the Congre

a few days ago from a tdtort visit to ritts
burgh. He informs us that the reception
tendered him at Johnstow n by a number of
persons who insisted that he was Francis
Murphy, the great temperance reformer, was
substantially correct as reported in these
columns last week. The resemblance exist
ing between the two gentlemen in a phvsical
point of view is somewhat remarkable,
hough having seen Mr. Murphy we are sure
we would not mistake him for our clerual
friend, while their pronounced temperance
proclivities converge at a common centre,
and the mistake of the Johnsfowners is
therefore not to be won iercd at. In other
days, when Mr. Jones wore his hair long, it
was a common saying that it would bo hard
to tell -whether a certain photograph was the
counterfeit presentment of that gentleman
himself or of Henry Ward Ib-echor.
Lambert Alexander Cogan, fourteen
years old, son of Mr. J. H. Cogan. a highly
respectable and worthy citizen of Clearfield
towr.ship, in this county, left his father's
house on the 15th of last December, and up
to this time Mr. Cogan has not, been able to
get any information of his whereabouts
The boy, when he left bis parents, wore a
ronr.d cap, drab colored roundabout, and
dark striped pants. He has blue eyes, dark
hair, and his face is a good deal freckled.
Mr. Cogail of course feels all the anxiety of
a father about his child, and if the papers in
Clearfield and h'air counties with which we
exchange will copy the substance of this item
Mr. C. will !w a thousand times grateful, as
it is more than likely that thebov mic eedeil

Titn Ilrrnlj, of this town, is plethoric of
news which once and aqaln seems to say
thr.t whenever you tickle a (jarden here or
hereabout, a harvest nurs: inevitably ensue.
For example, its t tiampionsbip of the Pindle
rtarrow-gatiee railroad to the Itlacklick coal
r"(i;.ons, ami its advocacy of the sale of the
LbensburK Mechanical Works. The Ttlack
lick coal region will be opened up for pur
poses of commerce in due 'ouise of time,
and so will be the Ebensburg Mechanical
Works, r.nt the Ilernhl s largeness of tell
ii;K ihincrs sometimes overshoots the mark.
Fur example: A representative of a certain
Eastern firm was in town two or three times
inside the paf six months looking at onr
Mechanical Works and tnlkinn of buying
the same. H e was pleased with the prospect
of things. He said that just here, where
lumber is prowr., and where labor is not
looking for wages which run beyond the
possibilities of capital to pay, ami where, in
the near f'tt ir", inimitable supplies of coal
and iron mils' of necessity be drawn from
the Itlacklick and Jackso.i region, is pre
ciselv th" spot on which to plant a wood
manufacturing establishment. He added
that to a discerning capitalist these and oth
er marks and data have seemed to be long
apparent, but that the advocacy of the 7t
?f of any enterprise of that sort at once
caused if. to become tinctured in the public
ir.ind with venality. This statement, is not
overdrawn. We giv it by authority, and
the sooner the Hrra'd ."learn that the less it
says on a sn'ijet which it fails to understand
the better it will be for ail concerned, antl
particularly for the F.bcnsburg Mechanical
Works.
The ritift is the name of a newspaper
printed at Curwensville. Clearfield county
near the point where rafting navigation on
the Susquehanna river is begun. It gives
tl:e foUowicp; (escriprinn of how thr ice
went off the river under the i nfl iienoe of t he
hot smti of last week: '"The ice came tear
ing over the dam antl continued passing over
for nearly t a-o hours As is usual every
sprir.g the iron bridge was crowded with
men, women, girls and boys watching the
grand j-p-etaem. Cakes f.-rty feet square
came to the dam. stepped, then broke antl
came tumbling and crushing over on its
way "n the sea.' No one who never saw
what in lum!" rrc.r n's psr'atioe we ca'l a
'break-up,' can have, any idea how grand a
sight, if is. Below ns the it e becomes broken
into fragments and tho sight is not near so
exciting to took upon." Wo learn, from
other sources, that the flood was one of un
precedented magnitn.lt., ami that the quan
tity of timb.-r t arried tlnwu by it to market
is not equalled by the records of other years.

In the face of everything, Wanamaker & T!rown increased
their great Clothing business last year at Oak Hall nearly a quarter
of a million dollars, and for 1S79 the new plans will make the
house more popular and increase the business much more.
Eighteen years ia the people's service at the old corner of Sixtli
and Market has taught us how to do the business well.
Whatever may be said, no house in the United States sells any
thing like so much Clothing at Retail as Oak Hall, and no house
in Philadelphia sells more than a quarter as mrtny goods as
Mr. Wanamaker sells in Clothing alone. Doing this large
business shews the people's regard for our goods, and enables us
to buy cheaply and sell at small profits.

it expressly for our own sales. The Sprin; stock is splendid,
