what the salary ought to be, bat insist
that it should be fixed at a definite amount,
without any dependence whatever ou the
duration of tbe session. It is perfectly
plain that if even $ 1,200 was the amount,
and all extras, such as f 100 for postage
stamps when no member spends tbe one
fourth of it, were excluded, the State
would save very nearly one hundred thou
sand dollars each session. It is an insult
to a man of intelligence to say that the
Legislature cannot do all the necessary
business required of it in a hundred days,
j and that fact would be made very manifest
if the salary was fixed at a certain amount
for the nation. Not a tithe of the assorted
' and faucy legislation that is now pending

The passage of tbe bill now in the House
will not cure tha evil of long sessions, but
would just as certainly operate as an in

does. The new bill is a good subject upon

sumption, and we are strongly of tho be
lief that such will be the only outcome of
this spasmodic cllort at retrenchment and
