We don't think it possible for Chaplain
Wrn. T. Davis to have been here and in
Washington city both at the same time, and
y.-t we rend that when the House of pre
ventatives was called to order, on Sunday
morning la-, a man in one (f the galleries
arose to his feet and shouted out: ; liar
ye! hear ye ! The wicked shall be turned
into Loll, and ail the nations that .'orget

Congress l:a f v.gotten God, and will be cast
into hell." Can if be that, there is still
another Chaplain Win. T. Davis abroad in
the land ? perish the thought.
Our old friend John O ilara, of West

P.razil, called to nee us on -Saturday iasf.but
as we w ere absent from home on that day we
did not have the pleasure of meeting and in
terviewing him. as wm could have wished.
He unbosomed himself to an Altoona Tribune
reporter the same day, however, and the sto
ry lie told was in exoneration of the Messrs.
Collins from charges of cru-lty and injustice
brought against, thorn by certain irresponsi
ble ailventnrers who claim t; have been in
their employ, hut who more probably skulk

If Mr. Daniel O. P.arr, of Pittsburgh,
who is prominently named in connection
with tin- nomination for State Treasurer on
the Democratic ticket, is fortunate enough to
make his calling and election sure, we do
not uuestion that it w ill he done altogether
on the square, though it must he admired
that such a result would give room for sus
picion that there was a political Itar-gain
Fomewhere, and that Daniel (. d his ele
vation to the fact that he had more votes in
the convention and at the polls than either
f f his competitors. There is nothing ftarr
fillister, however, in that way of winning a
victory.

G. C iuton Gatdner, E-o.. General Sn- :
p. i intet deti of the IVpnsy ' van a I'.ai road,
with his rfice. af Altoona, has resigned that
position for the purpose of arrepti-c one of
greater responsibility and more profit, w
presume, on the Hoosae Tuinel route, com
prising the Fitchburg and the Troy and Ros- .
ton Uailroad, in Massachusetts. It. will not
lie questioned that M r. Gardner has r.iade an ;
efficient, courteous" anil faithful officer, and
in li it new departure we are sure he wili
take with him the best wishes of a host Of 1
warm friends and personal admirers. His
resignation taken effect, we believe, on the ,
first of April, but who his successor will he
has not yet transpired. ,
Having found, as he was no way hack
ward in telling us, that it pays to ad vertise I
in the Fkf.emak, Mr. D. G. M'Ciillongh, ot :
Altoona. once more comes to the front this
week with a larger and more tempting list
of prices than ever, as will be seen hy his
advertisement elsewhere. We can say from '
our own knowledge that the "Checkered
Front" is one of the most extensive grocery
establishments in Altoora, and what Dave
don't know about selling cheap is not worth
knowing, Give'him a call, if for no other
purpose than to buy mackerel, which we
know to he good and which he sells at prices 1
never before dreamed of in the philosophy .
of fish eatsrs.
Among the names of certain San Fran- j
cis.'O clergymen who te'.egraphed an urgent
appeal the other day to Mr. Hayes to sign
the anti-Chinese bill, we notice those of Kev. '
H. P. Gallagher, and his younger brother,
Kev. Jos. A. Gallagher, piesent pastors of
St. Joseph's Catholic church, in that city,
both of whom will be recognized as former
residents, of Loretto, this county, where
some thirty years ago they had charge as
pastor and curate of St. Michael'g church.
Their many friends in this vicinity will be
glad to learn from the fact stated that they
, are still living and evidently enjoying good
health, while few there are who will, we
opine, find fault with their action on the
Chinese (iiiestioii, vain though their effortu
. were.
The counsel for Noah Murphy, charged
with the larceny of a saw fro'n a saw mill in
Snmmerhill township, saw, or seemed to
see, that we knew too much or too little,
probably the 'latter, about a saw, and when
he saw- that, we were drawn to serve as a
jnror in said case, he saw fit. to enter his
protest, and as a consequence everybody
present saw lis stepping down and out. of
the jury box, much to our relief, the reader
may bo sure. Whether the cross-cut saws
w hich surmount the pages of the FrtF.F.MAN
and at which several of our cotemporaries
have been poking fnti, had anything to do
with counselsobjections, we are not of course
prepared to say. We are glad, however,
that he saw fit to object to our presence in
the jury box.
Voiing inii who refrain from petting
married because they f'.-ar they would not be
able to support a family, may find consola
tion and encouragement in the ex perien.se of
Mr. George Lent 7., of Allegheny township,
who not only commenced his married life
twenty-two years ago in rather straitened
circumstances, t hough now one of the most
prosperous and well-to do citizens of the
county, but during that period has been
made 'he happy fattier of no less than eigh
teen children, all of whom are still living
under the parental roof, ai-.d several of whom
are of great assistance to him in the every
day duties of life. Mr. Lentz is certainly to
ho congratulated, a? well on his success in
accumulating a fair competence as on his
unsurpassable con 'ribut ion to the census re
turns of t he count ry. There can be no bar
ren waste r here such men reside.
On Tuesday of last week, at the mouth
of Chest Creek, in Clearfield county, a man
named John P.. Wensell metiwith a f-io ac-cid-nt
which soon resulted in death. He
was engnged at the time running in logs for
theMessrs. Mehaffey. and while soemployed
w as caught in a jam. and his right arm was
fractured and his ribs crushed in. Strange
to say he was able to walk a couple of miles
af'.r receiving the injuries, when kind
fsietvls took him into ;i convenient house.
Medical aid was summoned from Glen Hope
and Cherrytree, but before the arrival of the
lectors the unfortunate man wadead. His
last words are said to have been : '"I want
to see my wife and children before I die."
The remains were removed to Carrolltown
and iuterro.l in the Catholic cemetery there
th" following Thursday. Mr. Wensell was
a married man with a wife and five children
and his reputation was goodjwith all who
knew him.
Our former townsman, Mr. F.van Grif
fith, and son, arrived home last Saturday
night, after an experimental absence in
Iowa and Nebraska of about one year. On
his return trip, Mr. Tiriffilh had an experi
ence whf.s'ii was not altogether agreeable.
He and son had put, up for the night in a
hotel in Council P.lufl's, Iowa, where in the
midst of a-i altercation, which accidentally
arose, as it will out M'rst, a man was sla.-hed
with a knife across the abdomen. The
wound war. for a time thought to be mortal,
but it was nnf. for the man in a few day?
was pronounced by attendant physicians to
be out of danger. " lint Mr. Griffith am", son
chanced to be witnesses of the deed.Jand
were detained for a day or two to give tes
timony in a matter of life or death, and it
was merely the providential withholding t.f
the fraction of an inch or two of a cut that
enabled thee- to get home as soon as thev
did. Mr. Cirlith) it is understood, will
again embark in the butchering business in
Kbeni-burg.
Aspirants for political honors on the
Irenioci.it!.- ticker navo been getting in their
work pretty lively during the present week,
and although the cilices to be voted for at
tl.e coming election are by 110 means abun
dant, the number of persons seeking them
can scarcely be classed in the same category.
Among those not already mentioned in these
columns we may name Slessrs. I). A. Luther
and Charles llunlap, of Carroll township,
both of whom are in quest of the shrievalty
plum, and either of whom would make a
Sheriff of w'lich Cambria county would cer
tainly have 110 reason to be ashamed. Mr.
Luther is without a superior anywhere in
all that constitutes mi honest, upright and
deserving citizen, and Mr. Dunlap, it is but
just to say, lias a record equally unobjection
able. 'For Poor House Director the only oth
er office to be tilled, we have been requested
to'annouuce Mr. JohnO'Hara, of Munster
tow nship, and Mr. Henry Hopple, of Carroll
township, the latter of whom proclaims
himself a Conservative Democrat of ttie
straightest sect. Of either of these two gen
tlemen we need say nothing, both being well
known as in every way fitted for the position
w hich one or the. other, and ir may be both
of them, will fail to attain. However that
may be, neither of them will be without
warm and enthusiastic friends in the con
veution, and should one or the otfier secure
the prize there ran bo no question but what
he will prove to be, "the right man in the
right place," and more than that cannot be
said on behalf of any one who has or may
hereafter enter the lists.

Attorney Kose, which lasted throughout the j
entire dav, Col. John P. Linton, temporarily
assumed the direction ot the criminal busi- ;

gestion by Mr. Johnston, John's counsel, j
that anybody who could perform such bung

1 The case of the Cotn'th. vs. Noah Murphy.
larceny and receiviue stolen goods, occupied ;
the attention of the Court all day and up to '
S.HU o'cloc k at night. The particulars of j
this case have heretofore appeared in the j
Frf.fman. About one year ago Mr. Wil- !
liam Knepper. of Croyle township, lost an
: upright saw from his saw-mill. Suspicion :
at first attached to Jacob Murphy, and he j
was tried for the theft at last June Court, 1
the verdict of the jury being not guilty.
Then followed Noah Murphy's arrest. His !
case first came up at the December term,
when the jury failed to agree on a verdict. J
After hearing a large mass of testimony, and
listening to speeches by District Attorney '
Hose for the Cotn'th. and (Jeorge M. Keade,
Ksq., for the defendant, the case was given j
to the jury by the Court at the ho-ir before ;
named, and in about our hour's time the fol
lowing verdict was returned : "We find
Nnah Murphy guilty of larceny and not 1
guilty of receiving stolen goods, and recotn- 1
mend him to the mercy of the Court." Tho i
defendant was takeu to jail to await sen
tence. '
Then followed the rase of the Cotn'th. vs.
Sarah M. K nepper, charged with assault and
battery. The testimony went to show that
Mrs. Knepper and Mrs. Ciies; nutwood, the
latter being the prosecutor in the case, are ,
nenr neighbors in Croyle township, and, AO- j
man-like, failed to agree as to the ownership
of a blind path leading from the farm of the
one to that of the other. The testimony was
1 all in al It o'clock, wheu Court adjourned.
' M KHNESDAY MORSIS'l.
Court met at 9 o'clock, ami counsel In tho ,
case before stated rua.'.e their pleas. His '
honor, in bis charge, said that from the ap- 1
pearance of things it looked as if this whole j
matter should have been settled before a ,
Justice of the Peace, and not have been per- 1
milted to disturb the tranquillity of a Court
of Jiioi ice by the consideration thereof. The j
jury went out, and in a short time afterward !
hrought iu a verdict of quilty in manner j
and form as the defendant stood indicted. j
, Millard F. Blum was next arraigned, on
the charge of adultery and bastardy. This ,
case also comes from Croyle tow nship. Mr. j
Blum is a married man, and ihe prosecutrix
is by name Charlotte Sharp. The allegation
by Charlocte was that Millard had falsified
his marrage record, and otherwise hail de.
meaiibd himself in a manner derogatory to
the laws of the Com'ili. by becoming the j
father of an illegitimate child. The testi- ',
mony brought forward was volumiuous hut '
scarcely interesting to the general reader, j
This testimony and the several arguments j
of rouns'd had been taken in by tho hour of
12 o'clock, when Court took its usual recess.
AFTI P.NOON Stissios:.
Court charged the jury iu tho Piumnier :
' case. A verdict was subsequently returned
of guilty, and the prisnner was sentenced to !
undergo imprisonment iu the county jail for '
the period of three months, pay the costs, etc. I
A jury was ewoiii in the civil case of :
Evans' administrators vs. Coincy an action
for debt. !
Then, a jury in a hn',ot corpus case for the .
ownership of a small lad named Dick was '
empannelcd. The other jurors were dis-
charged from further attendance. j
The last mentioned case was tried first,
and resulted iu the remanding of Ihe hoy to j
the custody of his guardian, Mr. Dick, of In
diana county, as against the claim for his
possession put in by Mrs. Lewis King, of
t Croyle township.
